Perpendicular-current Studies of Electron Transport Across Metal/Metal Interfaces
We review what we have learned about the scattering of electrons by the
interfaces between two different metals (M1/M2) in the
current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) geometry. In this geometry, the intrinsic
quantity is the specific resistance, AR, the product of the area through which
the CPP current flows times the CPP resistance. We describe results for both
non-magnetic/non-magnetic (N1/N2) and ferromagnetic/non-magnetic (F/N) pairs.
We focus especially upon cases where M1/M2 are lattice matched (i.e., have the
same crystal structure and the same lattice parameters to within ~ 1%), because
in these cases no-free-parameter calculations of 2AR agree surprisingly well
with measured values. But we also list and briefly discuss cases where M1/M2
are not lattice matched, either having different crystal structures, or lattice
parameters that differ by several percent. The published calculations of 2AR in

Is it really possible to build a bridge between cost-benefit analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis?
Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is a recognised as the economic evaluation technique that accords most with the underlying principles of standard welfare economic theory. However, due to problems associated with the technique, economists evaluating resources allocation decisions in health care have most often used cost-effective analysis (CEA), in which health benefits are expressed in non-monetary units. As a result, attempts have been made to build a welfare economic bridge between cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). In this paper, we develops these attempts and finds that, while assumptions can be made to facilitate a constant willingness-to-pay per unit of health outcome, these restrictions are highly unrealistic. We develop an impossibility theorem that shows it is not possible to link CBA and CEA if: (i) the axioms of expected utility theory hold; (ii) the quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) model is valid in a welfare economic sense; and (iii) illness affects the ability to enjoy consumption. We conclude that, within a welfare economic framework, it would be unwise to rely on a link between CBA and CEA in economic evaluations
Seeing Through the Noise: Seismic Reflection Profiling in Urban Areas
Studies for urban hazard or resource assessment often take place in densely populated areas characterized by considerable cultural noise. These site conditions can severely compromise seismic reflection data quality. We have collected vibroseis and hammer (weight drop) seismic reflection data in a range of geologic conditions to image stratigraphy and structures in the upper one km along regional highways, city streets,and power line access roads. In addition to the challenges of safety and outreach, acquisition efforts along busy streets and highways often encounter poor receiver coupling and large-amplitude coherent noise from traffic and power lines. Although higher quality seismic reflection data may be obtained by simply choosing alternate sites with less cultural noise, modifications to the acquisition and processing step scan minimize the effects of cultural noise and poor coupling where profiling is most relevant. Flagging crews, flyers and public announcements assist with outreach and safety concerns, and the local news media are often enthusiastic about publicizing geologic studies. Recording long-record vibroseis data reduces the effects of noise by itself,but data quality can be further optimized by recording uncorrelated,unstacked data and applying precorrelation amplitude adjustments and filters. Recording individual hammer shots likewise allows gains or mutes to normalize or remove traffic noise prior to vertical stacking. Large numbers of receiver channels allow attenuation of random noise and velocity filtering to remove coherent noise. Because ground roll and normal moveout (NMO) corrections minimize near-surface coverage, asymmetric source-receiver geometry allows for additional near-surface fold while muting large amplitude ground rolland NMO stretch. Source and geophone coupling on road shoulder scan degrade signal quality due to variable materials and topography,but these problems are often addressed with static corrections. Our experience is that high-quality seismic data can be obtained in noisy urban areas, but many recorded channels and a careful attention to acquisition and processing procedures can significantly improve the results
Electron spin relaxation in organic semiconductors probed through muSR
Muon spin spectroscopy and in particular the avoided level crossing technique
is introduced, with the aim of showing it as a very sensitive local probe for
electron spin relaxation in organic semiconductors. Avoided level crossing data
on TMS-pentacene at different temperatures are presented, and they are analysed
to extract the electron spin relaxation rate, that is shown to increase on
increasing the temperature from 0.02 MHz to 0.33 MHz at 3 K and 300 K

MAGIC-SPP: a database-driven DNA sequence processing package with associated management tools
BACKGROUND: Processing raw DNA sequence data is an especially challenging task for relatively small laboratories and core facilities that produce as many as 5000 or more DNA sequences per week from multiple projects in widely differing species. To meet this challenge, we have developed the flexible, scalable, and automated sequence processing package described here. RESULTS: MAGIC-SPP is a DNA sequence processing package consisting of an Oracle 9i relational database, a Perl pipeline, and user interfaces implemented either as JavaServer Pages (JSP) or as a Java graphical user interface (GUI). The database not only serves as a data repository, but also controls processing of trace files. MAGIC-SPP includes an administrative interface, a laboratory information management system, and interfaces for exploring sequences, monitoring quality control, and troubleshooting problems related to sequencing activities. In the sequence trimming algorithm it employs new features designed to improve performance with respect to concerns such as concatenated linkers, identification of the expected start position of a vector insert, and extending the useful length of trimmed sequences by bridging short regions of low quality when the following high quality segment is sufficiently long to justify doing so. CONCLUSION: MAGIC-SPP has been designed to minimize human error, while simultaneously being robust, versatile, flexible and automated. It offers a unique combination of features that permit administration by a biologist with little or no informatics background. Cumulative Risk Assessment and Environmental Equity in Air Permitting: Interpretation, Methods, Community Participation and Implementation of a Unique Statute
In 2008, the statute authorizing the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to issue air permits was amended to include a unique requirement to analyze and consider âcumulative levels and effects of past and current environmental pollution from all sources on the environment and residents of the geographic area within which the facilityâs emissions are likely to be deposited.â Data describing the Statute Area suggest it is challenged by environmental and socioeconomic concerns, i.e., concerns which are often described by the phrase âenvironmental equityâ. With input from diverse stakeholders, the MPCA developed a methodology for implementing a cumulative levels and effects analysis when issuing air permits in the designated geographic area. A Process Document was created defining explicit steps a project proposer must complete in the analysis. An accompanying Reference Document compiles all available environmental health data relevant to the Statute Area that could be identified. The final cumulative levels and effects methodology is organized by health endpoint and identifies hazard, exposure and health indices that require further evaluation. The resulting assessment is summarized and presented to decision makers for consideration in the regulatory permitting process. Density and Boundary Effects on Pion Distributions in Relativistic Heavy--Ion Collisions
We compute the pion inclusive momentum distribution in a heavy-ion collision,
assuming thermal equilibrium and accounting for boundary effects at the time of
decoupling. We calculate the chemical potential corresponding to an average
pion multiplicity in central collisions and explore the consequences of having
the pion system produced close to the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein

MAGIC Database and Interfaces: An Integrated Package for Gene Discovery and Expression
The rapidly increasing rate at which biological data is being produced requires a
corresponding growth in relational databases and associated tools that can help
laboratories contend with that data. With this need in mind, we describe here
a Modular Approach to a Genomic, Integrated and Comprehensive (MAGIC)
Database. This Oracle 9i database derives from an initial focus in our laboratory
on gene discovery via production and analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs),
and subsequently on gene expression as assessed by both EST clustering and
microarrays. The MAGIC Gene Discovery portion of the database focuses on
information derived from DNA sequences and on its biological relevance. In
addition to MAGIC SEQ-LIMS, which is designed to support activities in the
laboratory, it contains several additional subschemas. The latter include MAGIC
Admin for database administration, MAGIC Sequence for sequence processing as
well as sequence and clone attributes, MAGIC Cluster for the results of EST
clustering, MAGIC Polymorphism in support of microsatellite and single-nucleotide-polymorphism
discovery, and MAGIC Annotation for electronic annotation by
BLAST and BLAT. The MAGIC Microarray portion is a MIAME-compliant database
with two components at present. These are MAGIC Array-LIMS, which makes
possible remote entry of all information into the database, and MAGIC Array
Analysis, which provides data mining and visualization. Because all aspects of
interaction with the MAGIC Database are via a web browser, it is ideally suited
not only for individual research laboratories but also for core facilities that serve
clients at any distance
Origin of entropy convergence in hydrophobic hydration and protein folding
An information theory model is used to construct a molecular explanation why
hydrophobic solvation entropies measured in calorimetry of protein unfolding
converge at a common temperature. The entropy convergence follows from the weak
temperature dependence of occupancy fluctuations for molecular-scale volumes in
water. The macroscopic expression of the contrasting entropic behavior between
water and common organic solvents is the relative temperature insensitivity of
the water isothermal compressibility. The information theory model provides a
quantitative description of small molecule hydration and predicts a negative
entropy at convergence. Interpretations of entropic contributions to protein
