    The Relationship between Knowledge and Medication Compliance Behavior among Patients with Tuberculosis

    Tuberculosis (TB) remains the highest priority among infectious diseases in the world today with increasing morbidity and mortality every year. Adherence to treatment plays an important role in the success of therapy among TB patients. This study aims to explore the relationship between demographic characteristics, knowledge, and medication compliance behavior among patients with tuberculosis in Indonesia. This study was descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design with the total sample was 150 tuberculosis confirmed in Medan Pulmonary Hospital, Indonesia. In this study found that there is a significant relationship between ethnicity and medication adherence (continues variable) with p = 0.01. Meanwhile when medication compliance behavior was treated as categorical variables, a significant relationship was found between medication compliance behavior and medical history (p = 0.03), smoking (p = 0.005), and alcohol (p = 0.03) among tuberculosis patients in Indonesia. In the multivariate analysis, multiple linear regression was performed which surprisingly shows that education was significantly associated with knowledge of TB (p = 0,02), and ethnicity (0.04)

    Reversible Data Hiding Scheme with High Embedding Capacity Using Semi-Indicator-Free Strategy

    A novel reversible data-hiding scheme is proposed to embed secret data into a side-matched-vector-quantization- (SMVQ-) compressed image and achieve lossless reconstruction of a vector-quantization- (VQ-) compressed image. The rather random distributed histogram of a VQ-compressed image can be relocated to locations close to zero by SMVQ prediction. With this strategy, fewer bits can be utilized to encode SMVQ indices with very small values. Moreover, no indicator is required to encode these indices, which yields extrahiding space to hide secret data. Hence, high embedding capacity and low bit rate scenarios are deposited. More specifically, in terms of the embedding rate, the bit rate, and the embedding capacity, experimental results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is superior to those of the former data hiding schemes for VQ-based, VQ/SMVQ-based, and search-order-coding- (SOC-) based compressed images

    Predictors of psychiatric readmissions in the short- and long-term: a population-based study in taiwan

    OBJECTIVES: To explore the risks and rates of readmission and their predictors 14 days, one year, and five years after discharge for the psychiatric population in Taiwan. METHODS: This was a prospective study based on claims from 44,237 first-time hospitalized psychiatric patients discharged in 2000, who were followed for up to five years after discharge. The cumulative incidence and incidence density of readmission were calculated for various follow-up periods after discharge, and Cox proportional hazard models were generated to identify the significant predictors for psychiatric readmission. RESULTS: The less than 14-day, one-year, and five-year cumulative incidences were estimated at 6.1%, 22.3%, and 37.8%, respectively. The corresponding figures for incidence density were 4.58, 1.04, and 0.69 per 1,000 person-days, respectively. Certain factors were significantly associated with increased risk of readmission irrespective of the length of follow-up, including male gender, length of hospital stay >15 days, economic poverty, a leading discharge diagnosis of schizophrenia/affective disorders, and residence in less-urbanized regions. Compared to children/adolescents, young adults (20-39 years) were significantly associated with increased risks of <one-year and <five-year readmissions, but not <14-day readmission. Additionally, hospital characteristics were significantly associated with increased risk of <14-day and <one-year readmission, but not with risk of <five-year readmission. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that the significant predictors for psychiatric readmission 14 days to five years after discharge were essentially the same except for patient's age and hospital accreditation level. This study also highlighted the importance of socioeconomic factors in the prediction of readmission

    AbstractObjectiveFetal ductus arteriosus aneurysm (DAA) is a rare but potentially risky congenital heart disease. It is often not diagnosed until the third trimester because of its asymptomatic nature and late onset. In rare occasions, DAA may result in serious complications; therefore, prenatal diagnosis is helpful.Case ReportHerein, we report the case of a foetus with cystic hygroma and increased nuchal translucency in the first trimester (but regressed at 20-week anomalous scan). Karyotyping indicated a 46 XY genotype. A large vascular mass was noted at the apex of the left lung by Doppler ultrasound at 38 weeks of gestation, with a diameter of 12.5 mm. After birth, echocardiography showed a patent ductus arteriosus with aneurysmal dilatation (17 mm as the largest diameter); thus, DAA was impressed. Chest computed tomography and three-dimensional angiography confirmed the large aneurysmal dilatation of the ductus arteriosus with a closed end at the pulmonary arterial side.ConclusionThe male infant survived, but presented mild respiratory distress at birth. He was discharged at 24 days of age. At that time, DAA had regressed partially (diameter of 8.5 mm and much less blood flow), and it fully regressed at 40 days of age

    Mean structure and fluctuations of the Kuroshio east of Taiwan from in situ and remote observations

The definitive version was published in Oceanography 28, no. 4 (2015): 74–83, doi:10.5670/oceanog.2015.83.The Kuroshio is important to climate, weather prediction, and fishery management along the northeast coast of Asia because it transports tremendous heat, salt, and energy from east of the Philippines to waters southeast of Japan. In the middle of its journey northward, the Kuroshio’s velocity mean and its variability east of Taiwan crucially affect its downstream variability. To improve understanding of the Kuroshio there, multiple platforms were used to collect intensive observations off Taiwan during the three-year Observations of the Kuroshio Transports and their Variability (OKTV) program (2012–2015). Mean Kuroshio velocity transects show two velocity maxima southeast of Taiwan, with the primary velocity core on the onshore side of the Kuroshio exhibiting a mean maximum velocity of ~1.2 m s–1. The two cores then merge and move at a single velocity maximum of ~1 m s–1 east of Taiwan. Standard deviations of both the directly measured poleward (v) and zonal (u) velocities are ~0.4 m s–1 in the Kuroshio main stream. Water mass exchange in the Kuroshio east of Taiwan was found to be complicated, as it includes water of Kuroshio origin, South China Sea Water, and West Philippine Sea Water, and it vitally affects heat, salt, and nutrient inputs to the East China Sea. Impinging eddies and typhoons are two of the principal causes of variability in the Kuroshio.     Applying the AHP to support the best-value contractor selection – lessons learned from two case studies in Taiwan

    Lately the Best-Value (BV) method for contractor selection has been receiving considerable attention in the public sector in many countries. However, the operations used in performing the BV method often differ due to the various government procurement requirements. Consequently, some of the methods popular in the academic community are not easily incorporated in the BV method in some countries. To enhance the procurement process, this study aims to gain experience by applying the well-known analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to weight the decision criteria for selecting BV contractors of two construction projects in Taiwan. Through these two case studies, this work confirms that the AHP provides a significant benefit for considering the individual preferences of all decision-makers when weighting the criteria. However, this study finds two major potential obstacles, the legal requirements associated with using the AHP and the time it takes to implement the AHP. To overcome these obstacles, this work suggests guidelines to meet the legal requirements for implementing the AHP in the BV contractor selection, and proposes several strategies to shorten the AHP implementation time. The lessons learned here are relevant to those countries in which BV method must be performed in a transparent and strictly regulated environment

    Optimization of a PVC Membrane for Reference Field Effect Transistors

    For the miniaturization of ISFET sensing systems, the concept of a REFET with low ion sensitivity is proposed to replace the conventional reference electrodes through the arrangement of a quasi reference electrode and a differential readout circuit. In this study, an ion-unblocking membrane was used as the top layer of a REFET. To optimize the REFET performance, the influences of the silylating process, different plasticizers, and the composition of the PVC cocktails were investigated. A low sensitivity (10.4 ± 2.2 mV/pH) and high linearity (99.7 ± 0.3 %) in the range from pH 2.2 to pH 11.6 was obtained for the REFET with a 60 wt.% DNP/(DNP + PVC) membrane. To evaluate the long term stability, the drift coefficient was estimated, and for the best REFET, it was −0.74 mV/h. Two criteria for assessing the lifetime of REFETs were used, namely the increase in pH sensitivity to a value higher than 15 mV/pH and the degradation of linearity below 99 %.
