    Deformation of LeBrun's ALE metrics with negative mass

    In this article we investigate deformations of a scalar-flat K\"ahler metric on the total space of complex line bundles over CP^1 constructed by C. LeBrun. In particular, we find that the metric is included in a one-dimensional family of such metrics on the four-manifold, where the complex structure in the deformation is not the standard one.Comment: 20 pages, no figure.     EGRET Observations of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission in Orion: Analysis Through Cycle 6

    We present a study of the high-energy diffuse emission observed toward Orion by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. The total exposure by EGRET in this region has increased by more than a factor of two since a previous study. A simple model for the diffuse emission adequately fits the data; no significant point sources are detected in the region studied (l=195l = 195^\circ to 220220^\circ and b=25to10b = -25^\circ to -10^\circ) in either the composite dataset or in two separate groups of EGRET viewing periods considered. The gamma-ray emissivity in Orion is found to be (1.65±0.11)×1026ssr1(1.65 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-26} {s sr}^{-1} for E > 100 MeV, and the differential emissivity is well-described as a combination of contributions from cosmic-ray electrons and protons with approximately the local density. The molecular mass calibrating ratio is N(H2)/WCO=(1.35±0.15)×1020cm2(Kkm/s)1N(H_2)/W_{CO} = (1.35 \pm 0.15) \times 10^{20} cm^{-2} (K km/s)^{-1}.Comment: 16 pages, including 5 figures. 3 Tables as three separate files.     The signature of 44Ti in Cassiopeia A revealed by IBIS/ISGRI on INTEGRAL

    We report the detection of both the 67.9 and 78.4 keV 44Sc gamma-ray lines in Cassiopeia A with the INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI instrument. Besides the robustness provided by spectro-imaging observations, the main improvements compared to previous measurements are a clear separation of the two 44Sc lines together with an improved significance of the detection of the hard X-ray continuum up to 100 keV. These allow us to refine the determination of the 44Ti yield and to constrain the nature of the nonthermal continuum emission. By combining COMPTEL, BeppoSAX/PDS and ISGRI measurements, we find a line flux of (2.5 +/- 0.3)*10(-5) cm(-2) s(-1) leading to a synthesized 44Ti mass of 1.6 (+0.6-0.3)*10(-4) solar mass. This high value suggests that Cas A is peculiar in comparison to other young supernova remnants, from which so far no line emission from 44Ti decay has been unambiguously detected.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

    Properties of equations of the continuous Toda type

    We study a modified version of an equation of the continuous Toda type in 1+1 dimensions. This equation contains a friction-like term which can be switched off by annihilating a free parameter \ep. We apply the prolongation method, the symmetry and the approximate symmetry approach. This strategy allows us to get insight into both the equations for \ep =0 and \ep \ne 0, whose properties arising in the above frameworks are mutually compared. For \ep =0, the related prolongation equations are solved by means of certain series expansions which lead to an infinite- dimensional Lie algebra. Furthermore, using a realization of the Lie algebra of the Euclidean group E2E_{2}, a connection is shown between the continuous Toda equation and a linear wave equation which resembles a special case of a three-dimensional wave equation that occurs in a generalized Gibbons-Hawking ansatz \cite{lebrun}. Nontrivial solutions to the wave equation expressed in terms of Bessel functions are determined. For \ep\,\ne\,0, we obtain a finite-dimensional Lie algebra with four elements. A matrix representation of this algebra yields solutions of the modified continuous Toda equation associated with a reduced form of a perturbative Liouville equation. This result coincides with that achieved in the context of the approximate symmetry approach. Example of exact solutions are also provided. In particular, the inverse of the exponential-integral function turns out to be defined by the reduced differential equation coming from a linear combination of the time and space translations. Finally, a Lie algebra characterizing the approximate symmetries is discussed.Comment: LaTex file, 27 page

    Continuous measurements of upper atmospheric lightning discharges by EUSO

    In this study we present possibility of continuous measurements of lightning-associated transient luminous events (TLEs) from the international space station using the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO) telescope. From global lightning data we estimated possible detection rates of lightning and TLEs. We also estimated photon numbers and optical spectra of TLEs in the near-ultraviolet region (300400 nm) where the fluorescence emission caused by CRs exists. These results imply that EUSO has enough capabilities to monitor not only UHECRs but also global lightning and TLEs. We are developing a new-type of high-voltage divider for multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) which can automatically change the gain level rapidly (< 350 microseconds) and which enable us to carry out both UHECR and TLE observations.     Asymmetric first-price auctions with uniform distributions: analytic solutions to the general case

    While auction research, including asymmetric auctions, has grown significantly in recent years, there is still little analytical solutions of first-price auctions outside the symmetric case. Even in the uniform case, Griesmer et al. (1967) and Plum (1992) find solutions only to the case where the lower bounds of the two distributions are the same. We present the general analytical solutions to asymmetric auctions in the uniform case for two bidders, both with and without a minimum bid. We show that our solution is consistent with the previously known solutions of auctions with uniform distributions. Several interesting examples are presented including a class where the two bid functions are linear. We hope this result improves our understanding of auctions and provides a useful tool for future research in auctions

    The data obtained by the gamma ray satellite COS-B was processed, condensed and integrated together with the relevant mission and experiment parameters into the Final COS-B Database. The database contents and the access programs available with the database are outlined. The final sky coverage and a presentation of the large scale distribution of the observed Milky Way emission are given. The database is announced to be available through the European Space Agency

    INTEGRAL detection of hard X-rays from NGC 6334: Nonthermal emission from colliding winds or an AGN?

    We report the detection of hard X-ray emission from the field of the star-forming region NGC 6334 with the the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory INTEGRAL. The JEM-X monitor and ISGRI imager aboard INTEGRAL and Chandra ACIS imager were used to construct 3-80 keV images and spectra of NGC 6334. The 3-10 keV and 10-35 keV images made with JEM-X show a complex structure of extended emission from NGC 6334. The ISGRI source detected in the energy ranges 20-40 keV and 40-80 keV coincides with the NGC 6334 ridge. The 20-60 keV flux from the source is (1.8+-0.37)*10(-11) erg cm(-2) s(-1). Spectral analysis of the source revealed a hard power-law component with a photon index about 1. The observed X-ray fluxes are in agreement with extrapolations of X-ray imaging observations of NGC 6334 by Chandra ACIS and ASCA GIS. The X-ray data are consistent with two very different physical models. A probable scenario is emission from a heavily absorbed, compact and hard Chandra source that is associated with the AGN candidate radio source NGC 6334B. Another possible model is the extended Chandra source of nonthermal emission from NGC 6334 that can also account for the hard X-ray emission observed by INTEGRAL. The origin of the emission in this scenario is due to electron acceleration in energetic outflows from massive early type stars. The possibility of emission from a young supernova remnant, as suggested by earlier infrared observations of NGC 6334, is constrained by the non-detection of 44Ti lines.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics (in press

    Hard X-ray Emission Clumps in the gamma-Cygni Supernova Remnant: an INTEGRAL-ISGRI View

    Spatially resolved images of the galactic supernova remnant G78.2+2.1 (gamma-Cygni) in hard X-ray energy bands from 25 keV to 120 keV are obtained with the IBIS-ISGRI imager aboard the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory INTEGRAL. The images are dominated by localized clumps of about ten arcmin in size. The flux of the most prominent North-Western (NW) clump is (1.7 +/- 0.4) 10^{-11} erg/cm^2/s in the 25-40 keV band. The observed X-ray fluxes are in agreement with extrapolations of soft X-ray imaging observations of gamma-Cygni by ASCA GIS and spatially unresolved RXTE PCA data. The positions of the hard X-ray clumps correlate with bright patches of optical line emission, possibly indicating the presence of radiative shock waves in a shocked cloud. The observed spatial structure and spectra are consistent with model predictions of hard X-ray emission from nonthermal electrons accelerated by a radiative shock in a supernova interacting with an interstellar cloud, but the powerful stellar wind of the O9V star HD 193322 is a plausible candidate for the NW source as well.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter
