How to enhance crop production and nitrogen fluxes? A result-oriented scheme to evaluate best agri-environmental measures in Veneto Region, Italy
The cost-effectiveness of adopting agri-environmental measures (AEMs) in Europe, which combine agricultural productions with reduced N losses, is debated due to poorly targeted site-specific funding that is allocated regardless of local variability. An integrated DAYCENT model-GIS platform was developed combining pedo-climatic and agricultural systems information. The aim was to evaluate best strategies to improve N fluxes of agro-ecosystems within a perspective of sustainable intensification. Indicators of agronomic efficiency and environmental quality were considered. The results showed that agronomic benefits were observed with a continuous soil cover (conservation agriculture and cover crops), which enhanced nitrogen use efficiency (+17%) and crop yields (+34%), although in some cases these might be overestimated due to modelling limitations. An overall environmental improvement was found with continuous soil cover and long-term change from mineral to organic inputs (NLeach 45 Mg ha 121), which were effective in the sandy soils of western and eastern Veneto with low SOM, improving the soil-water balance and nutrients availability over time. Results suggest that AEM subsidies should be allocated at a site-specific level that includes pedo-climatic variability, following a result-oriented approach

Nephrocytes Remove Microbiota-Derived Peptidoglycan from Systemic Circulation to Maintain Immune Homeostasis.
Preventing aberrant immune responses against the microbiota is essential for the health of the host. Microbiota-shed pathogen-associated molecular patterns translocate from the gut lumen into systemic circulation. Here, we examined the role of hemolymph (insect blood) filtration in regulating systemic responses to microbiota-derived peptidoglycan. Drosophila deficient for the transcription factor Klf15 (Klf15NN) are viable but lack nephrocytes-cells structurally and functionally homologous to the glomerular podocytes of the kidney. We found that Klf15NN flies were more resistant to infection than wild-type (WT) counterparts but exhibited a shortened lifespan. This was associated with constitutive Toll pathway activation triggered by excess peptidoglycan circulating in Klf15NN flies. In WT flies, peptidoglycan was removed from systemic circulation by nephrocytes through endocytosis and subsequent lysosomal degradation. Thus, renal filtration of microbiota-derived peptidoglycan maintains immune homeostasis in Drosophila, a function likely conserved in mammals and potentially relevant to the chronic immune activation seen in settings of impaired blood filtration
The ArDM experiment
The aim of the ArDM project is the development and operation of a one ton
double-phase liquid argon detector for direct Dark Matter searches. The
detector measures both the scintillation light and the ionization charge from
ionizing radiation using two independent readout systems. This paper briefly
describes the detector concept and presents preliminary results from the ArDM
R&D program, including a 3 l prototype developed to test the charge readout
system.Comment: Proceedings of the Epiphany 2010 Conference, to be published in Acta

Flux Modulations seen by the Muon Veto of the GERDA Experiment
The GERDA experiment at LNGS of INFN is equipped with an active muon veto.
The main part of the system is a water Cherenkov veto with 66~PMTs in the water
tank surrounding the GERDA cryostat. The muon flux recorded by this veto shows
a seasonal modulation. Two effects have been identified which are caused by
secondary muons from the CNGS neutrino beam (2.2 %) and a temperature
modulation of the atmosphere (1.4 %). A mean cosmic muon rate of /(sm) was found in good agreement with other experiments at
LNGS at a depth of 3500~meter water equivalent.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
The use of antimicrobials in italian heavy pig fattening farms
Data on antimicrobial use (AMU) in heavy pig production (>150 kg) are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the AMU in this production. Data from 2015 were collected for 143 fattening farms. The AMU was estimated through a treatment index per 100 days (TI100) using the defined daily dose animal for Italy (DDDAit). When possible, a comparison with the European Medicines Agency’s defined daily doses for animals (DDDvet) was performed. The median TI100 was 10.7 (range, 0.2–49.5). Group treatments represented 94.6% of overall consumption. The AMU calculated using DDDAit and DDDvet were strongly correlated (ρ = 0.976; p < 0.001). The AMU was negatively correlated with injectables use (ρ = −0.46, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with oral products (ρ = 0.21, p = 0.014), premixes (ρ = 0.26, p = 0.002), and mortality (ρ = 0.18; p = 0.027). Farm size was negatively correlated with AMU (ρ = −0.29, p < 0.001). Smaller farms were more frequently above the median TI100 (odds ratio = 2.3, 95% confidence interval = 1.2–4.7), suggesting that they may have lower biosecurity and management standards. The results of this study should provide useful insights for the development of an Italian monitoring system
The Abundance Distribution in the Extrasolar-Planet Host Star HD19994
Abundances of 22 elements have been determined from a high-resolution, high
signal-to-noise spectrum of HD19994, a star recently announced as harboring an
extrasolar planet. A detailed spectroscopic analysis of this stars finds it to
have a mass of 1.2+/-0.1Msun. HD19994 is found to be slightly enriched in
"metals" relative to the Sun 9[Fe/H]=+0.09+/-0.05 and an average of all metals
of [m/H]=+0.13), as are most stars known with extrasolar planets. In a search
for possible signatures of accretion of metal-rich gas onto the parent stars
(using HD19994 and published abundances for other stars), it is found that a
small subset of stars with planets exhibit a trend of increasing [X/H] with
increasing condensation temperature for a given element X. This trend may point
to the accretion of chemically fractionated solid material into the outer
(thin) convection zones of these solar-type stars. It is also found that this
small group of stars exhibiting an accretion signature all have large planets
orbiting much closer than is found, in general, for stars with planets not
showing this peculiar abundance trend, suggesting a physical link between
accretion and orbital separation. In addition, the stars showing evidence of
fractionated accretion are, on average, of larger mass (1.2Msun) than stars not
showing measurable evidence of accretion (1.0Msun).Comment: 19 pages, 4 tables, 13 figures, Astronomical Journal, in pres
decay of Ge into excited states with GERDA Phase I
Two neutrino double beta decay of Ge to excited states of Se
has been studied using data from Phase I of the GERDA experiment. An array
composed of up to 14 germanium detectors including detectors that have been
isotopically enriched in Ge was deployed in liquid argon. The analysis
of various possible transitions to excited final states is based on coincidence
events between pairs of detectors where a de-excitation ray is
detected in one detector and the two electrons in the other.
No signal has been observed and an event counting profile likelihood analysis
has been used to determine Frequentist 90\,\% C.L. bounds for three
transitions: : 1.6 yr,
: 3.7 yr and : 2.3 yr. These bounds are more
than two orders of magnitude larger than those reported previously. Bayesian
90\,\% credibility bounds were extracted and used to exclude several models for
the transition
Results on decay with emission of two neutrinos or Majorons in Ge from GERDA Phase I
A search for neutrinoless decay processes accompanied with
Majoron emission has been performed using data collected during Phase I of the
GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del
Gran Sasso of INFN (Italy). Processes with spectral indices n = 1, 2, 3, 7 were
searched for. No signals were found and lower limits of the order of 10
yr on their half-lives were derived, yielding substantially improved results
compared to previous experiments with Ge. A new result for the half-life
of the neutrino-accompanied decay of Ge with significantly
reduced uncertainties is also given, resulting in yr.Comment: 3 Figure
