Effect of alternating anaerobic and aerobic phases on the performance of a SBR treating effluents with high salinity and phenols concentration

The biological treatment of hypersaline wastewaters with high COD and phenols concentration requires long hydraulic retention times and much energy for aeration. In this work aeration time reduction in the reaction phase was studied in two sequential batch reactors (SBR) treating fermentation brine from table olive processing wastewater. To study the influence of an anaerobic phase on the SBR performance (for COD and phenolic compound removal efficiencies), different anaerobic/aerobic reaction times were evaluated. SBR-1 was operated with an anaerobic/aerobic hours ratio of 0/22, 8/14 and 14/8 and SBR-2 with a ratio of 22/0, 14/8 and 8/14. Results showed that the maximum organic matter reduction was obtained under aerobic reaction conditions (ratio 0/22) with a 82.3% and 77.9% of COD and total phenols removal, respectively. However, optimal conditions were considered to prevail for an anaerobic/aerobic ratio of 8/14, since the reactors performances were similar with lower energy consumption. Thus, 82.3% and 79.5% of COD and 77.9% and 78.3% of total phenols were removed in SBR-1 and SBR-2, respectively. The authors of this work thank the financial support of CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development) depending on the Spanish Ministry of Science and InnovationFerrer-Polonio, E.; Garcia Quijano, NT.; Mendoza Roca, JA.; Iborra Clar, A.; Pastor Alcañiz, L. In the title compound, C14H13N3S·H2O, the thiosemicarbazide group is nearly planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.072 (2) Å from the ideal least-squares plane, and shows an E conformation. In the crystal packing, the water molecules are involved in an extensive intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen-bond network, assisted by O—H⋯S interactions, which link the independent molecules into chains extended along b axis. An intramolecular hydrogen N—H⋯N bond helps to stabilize the molecular conformation

The rec(8)dup(8q)inv(8)(p23.1q22.1) chromosome associated with San Luis Valley Syndrome (SLVS OMIM 179613) is usually diagnosed in Hispanic patients from the USA Southwest where a founder carrier Spaniard lived around 1800 [1, 2]. This rec(8) has an 8q duplication of 47.90 Mb and an 8p deletion of 11.65 Mb [3, 4]. Excluding two de novo rec(8)dup q chromosomes characterized only by G-bands and included in a recent compilation [5], cytogenomic analyses identified nine comparable de novo der(8)dup q/del p chromosomes with or without a simultaneous 8p gain. We describe a Mexican mestizo girl with a de novo SLVS-like der(8) but with a concomitant 8p22p23.1 duplicatio

A Molecular Vision of the Interaction of Tomato Plants and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersic

    Get PDF
Fusarium oxysporum causes vascular wilt disease in a broad range of crops, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Tomato, a major and important vegetable crop, is susceptible to F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL), a biotrophic pathogen that is the causal agent of tomato wilt resulting in significant yield losses each year. Development of disease in susceptible tomato plants requires FOL to advance through a series of transitions, beginning with spore germination and culminating with establishment of a systemic infection. In addition, many host attributes, including the composition of root exudates, the structure of the root cortex, and the capacity to recognize and respond quickly to invasive growth of a pathogen, can impede the development of FOL. FOL divides into races on the basis of the ability of individual strains to overcome specific genes. This implies the presence of avirulence genes (Avr) in the fungus that is recognized by products of the corresponding genes. In tomato, resistance (R) genes against the wilt-inducing FOL are called immunity genes, and the interaction between these genes will determine the success of the infection

Effect of selenium application on mineral macro- and micronutrients and antioxidant status in strawberries

    Get PDF
The application of selenium (Se) as sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) at 0, 2, and 4 mg L-1 concentrations in nutrient solution to strawberry plants was evaluated. Selenium did not modify the dry weights of the roots, stems, leaves, and fruits, or the fresh weights of the stems and fruits. The 4 mg L-1 concentration caused decreases in the fresh weights of the roots and leaves and in the yield. The mineral content of different plant organs changed but was not adversely affected by Se applications, with the 2 mg L-1 treatment having a lower impact on mineral concentration variation, as well as temporary positive effects on the fruits’ antioxidant status. The fruit pH was not adversely affected by application of Se. Se application in nutrient solution proved to be an adequate technique to increase the Se content in all plant organs. Se concentration exhibited a differential distribution, with the highest levels in the roots, followed by the leaves and crowns; the fruits had the lowest levels, reaching an average concentration of 31.2 mg kg-1 of dry weight. By contrast, fruits from the untreated plants obtained an average concentration of only 6.35 mg kg-1, with no decreases in the concentrations of other mineral elements in treated plants

Journal of Cordoba Veterinary Students Research: scientific method and research publication for veterinary students

    Get PDF
Veterinary students lack the necessary skills to correctly evaluate scientific papers. With this activity, the authors aimed to train the participants in the specific requirements of scientific writing and the research process in general. Groups of students designed and performed laboratory experiments (related to veterinary clinical pathology) and later they were asked to write a scientific paper and create a poster with their results. Papers were subjected to a scholarly peer review and later compiled in a publication (Journal of Cordoba Veterinary Students), while posters were defended in a students’ congress. This activity was positively received by the students and participants were able to improve their critical thinking and scientific evaluation of veterinary literature
