The dynamics of the NAIRU model with two switching regimes

We consider a model of inflation and unemployment proposed in Ferri et al. (JEBO, 2001), in which the dynamics are described by a discontinuous piecewise linear map, made up of two branches. We shall show that the bounded dynamics may be classified in two cases: we may have either regular dynamics with stable cycles of any period or quasiperiodic trajectories, or only chaotic dynamics (pure chaos in which a unique absolutely continuous invariant ergodic measure exists, and structurally stable),in a rich variety of cyclical chaotic intervals. The main results are the analytical formulation of the border collision bifurcation curves, through which we give a complete picture of the possible outcomes of the model.Phillips curve, Regime switching, NAIRU, Nonlinearities, Discontinuous maps.

Transposição dentária: dois relatos de casos e revisão de literatura

Tooth transposition is a rare developmental disorder in which a normal tooth erupts in an inappropriate position. The change in position occurs between two adjacent teeth within the same quadrant. In this article, two cases of tooth transposition involving mandibular molars are described. Patient 1 presented with bilateral transposition between first and second mandibular molars. In addition, giroversion of the first molars was observed. Patient 2 presented with unilateral transposition between the mandibular left molars. Because this tooth disorder does not affect quality of life, both patients declined to seek dental treatment. Out of the 120 cases of tooth transposition found in the literature, 92,5% occurred in the maxilla and 15% were bilateral, 65,8% percent of these cases involved the canine and first premolar; 26.6% involved the canine and lateral incisor; 2,5% involved the canine and central incisor; and only 0.85% involved the first and second molar. The majority of tooth transposition cases occurred in women (66,6%). In literature, tooth transposition is a poorly-documented condition. Consequently, this report seeks to contribute to the existing information in the literature on this disorder.Resumo em português não disponíve

In-hospital brain natriuretic peptide and N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide variations are predictors of short-term and long-term outcome in acute decompensated heart failure

Acute decompensated heart failure is one of the most important causes of hospitalisation worldwide. Natriuretic peptides have shown their usefulness in the diagnosis and management of heart failure. Their variations during hospitalisation also appear useful to predict outcomes. In particular, data from the literature demonstrate that reduction from admission to discharge of brain natriuretic peptide and N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide in these patients is a predictor of future cardiovascular events

High Density Lipoproteins Inhibit Oxidative Stress-Induced Prostate Cancer Cell Proliferation

Recent evidence suggests that oxidative stress can play a role in the pathogenesis and the progression of prostate cancer (PCa). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is higher in PCa cells compared to normal prostate epithelial cells and this increase is proportional to the aggressiveness of the phenotype. Since high density lipoproteins (HDL) are known to exert antioxidant activities, their ability to reduce ROS levels and the consequent impact on cell proliferation was tested in normal and PCa cell lines. HDL significantly reduced basal and H2O2-induced oxidative stress in normal, androgen receptor (AR)-positive and AR-null PCa cell lines. AR, scavenger receptor BI and ATP binding cassette G1 transporter were not involved. In addition, HDL completely blunted H2O2-induced increase of cell proliferation, through their capacity to prevent the H2O2-induced shift of cell cycle distribution from G0/G1 towards G2/M phase. Synthetic HDL, made of the two main components of plasma-derived HDL (apoA-I and phosphatidylcholine) and which are under clinical development as anti-atherosclerotic agents, retained the ability of HDL to inhibit ROS production in PCa cells. Collectively, HDL antioxidant activity limits cell proliferation induced by ROS in AR-positive and AR-null PCa cell lines, thus supporting a possible role of HDL against PCa progression

A selective alpha1D-adrenoreceptor antagonist inhibits human prostate cancer cell proliferation and motility "in vitro"

The progression of prostate cancer (PC) to a metastatic hormone refractory disease is the major contributor to the overall cancer mortality in men, mainly because the conventional therapies are generally ineffective at this stage. Thus, other therapeutic options are needed as alternatives or in addition to the classic approaches to prevent or delay tumor progression. Catecholamines participate to the control of prostate cell functions by the activation of alpha1-adrenoreceptors (alpha1-AR) and increased sympathetic activity has been linked to PC development and evolution. Molecular and pharmacological studies identified three alpha1-AR subtypes (A, B and D), which differ in tissue distribution, cell signaling, pharmacology and physiological role. Within the prostate, alpha1A-ARs mainly control stromal cell functions, while alpha1B- and alpha1D- subtypes seem to modulate glandular epithelial cell growth. The possible direct contribution of alpha1D-ARs in tumor biology is supported by their overexpression in PC. The studies here presented investigate the "in vitro" antitumor action of A175, a selective alpha1D-AR antagonist we have recently obtained by modifying the potent, but not subtype-selective alpha1-AR antagonist (S)-WB4101, in the hormone-refractory PC3 and DU145 PC cell lines. The results indicate that A175 has an alpha1D-AR-mediated significant and dose-dependent antiproliferative action that possibly involves the induction of G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, but not apoptosis. In addition, A175 reduces cell migration and adhesiveness to culture plates. In conclusion, our work clarified some cellular aspects promoted by alpha1D-AR activity modulation and supports a further pharmacological approach in the cure of hormone-refractory PC, by targeting specifically this AR subtype

Women and Sainthood: the Body as an Expression and Manifestation of Divine Gifts. The Case of Blessed Inés of Benigànim

The body and the feminine are highly linked concepts into early modern mentalities. Women are considered to be more determined by their own body, a condition that would make them more imperfect, especially according to the ecclesiastical discourse. However, many religious women could take advantage of this «unavoidable» bond, mainly during the Baroque period, and through the mystical phenomenon. Among these women, we will highlight Blessed Inés of Benigànim, a valencian nun from the 17th century whose case will allow us to analyze corporal, feminine and spiritual bonds through different phenomena such as ecstasies, mortifications or relics.

«Viva el señor San Antonio, pues que tanto nos ampara»: Saints and their representation in the popular literature from the 18th and the 19th centuries

In the Early Modern Age, religion covered everyday life events, and saints were common characters to appeal for in case of necessity. Hagiographies, from an official sphere, spread their fame, but there was also an important circulation (oral and written) of religious popular literature (specially chapbooks and gozos) that made these characters famous among all the social spheres. First, we will present general sainthood features through valencian popular literature from the 18th century, and then we will focus into the case of Blessed Inés of Benigànim, with a local devotion that extends for a long period of time (from the 17th to the 20th centuries). Thanks to these texts we will be able to understand the conception people had of holy characters, an image that needn’t have to be exactly the same as the representation the Church tried to transmit
