    The Origin of the Initial Mass Function

    We review recent advances in our understanding of the origin of the initial mass function (IMF). We emphasize the use of numerical simulations to investigate how each physical process involved in star formation affects the resulting IMF. We stress that it is insufficient to just reproduce the IMF, but that any successful model needs to account for the many observed properties of star forming regions including clustering, mass segregation and binarity. Fragmentation involving the interplay of gravity, turbulence, and thermal effects is probably responsible for setting the characteristic stellar mass. Low-mass stars and brown dwarfs can form through the fragmentation of dense filaments and disks, possibly followed by early ejection from these dense environments which truncates their growth in mass. Higher-mass stars and the Salpeter-like slope of the IMF are most likely formed through continued accretion in a clustered environment. The effects of feedback and magnetic fields on the origin of the IMF are still largely unclear. Lastly, we discuss a number of outstanding problems that need to be addressed in order to develop a complete theory for the origin of the IMF.Comment: PPV conference paper, 16 pages, 11 figur

    Shifted distinct-part partition identities in arithmetic progressions

    The partition function p(n)p(n), which counts the number of partitions of a positive integer nn, is widely studied. Here, we study partition functions pS(n)p_S(n) that count partitions of nn into distinct parts satisfying certain congruence conditions. A shifted partition identity is an identity of the form pS1(n−H)=pS2(n)p_{S_1}(n-H) = p_{S_2}(n) for all nn in some arithmetic progression. Several identities of this type have been discovered, including two infinite families found by Alladi. In this paper, we use the theory of modular functions to determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for such an identity to exist. In addition, for two specific cases, we extend Alladi's theorem to other arithmetic progressions

    Massive star formation: Nurture, not nature

    We investigate the physical processes which lead to the formation of massive stars. Using a numerical simulation of the formation of a stellar cluster from a turbulent molecular cloud, we evaluate the relevant contributions of fragmentation and competitive accretion in determining the masses of the more massive stars. We find no correlation between the final mass of a massive star, and the mass of the clump from which it forms. Instead, we find that the bulk of the mass of massive stars comes from subsequent competitive accretion in a clustered environment. In fact, the majority of this mass infalls onto a pre-existing stellar cluster. Furthermore, the mass of the most massive star in a system increases as the system grows in numbers of stars and in total mass. This arises as the infalling gas is accompanied by newly formed stars, resulting in a larger cluster around a more massive star. High-mass stars gain mass as they gain companions, implying a direct causal relationship between the cluster formation process, and the formation of higher-mass stars therein.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS.     Cosmological bounds on tachyonic neutrinos

    Recent time-of-flight measurements on muon neutrinos in the OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment have found anomalously short times compared to the light travel-times, corresponding to a superluminal velocity, v−1=2.37±0.32×10−5v-1=2.37\pm0.32\times 10^{-5} in units where c=1c=1. We show that cosmological bounds rule out an explanation involving a Lorentz invariant tachyonic neutrino. At the OPERA energy scale, nucleosynthesis constraints imply v−1<0.86×10−12v-1<0.86\times 10^{-12} and the Cosmic Microwave Background observations imply v−1<7.1×10−23v-1<7.1\times 10^{-23}. The CMB limit on the velocity of a tachyon with an energy of 10 MeV is stronger than the SN1987A limit. Superluminal neutrinos that could be observed at particle accelerator energy scales would have to be associated with Lorentz symmetry violation.Comment: LaTeX, 4 page

    Through in-depth interviews of 22 Tinder users, we explore how users interpret their algorithmically mediated experience on the platform. We find that users have various explanations of whether and how Tinder uses algorithms and that users have varying degrees of certainty about these explanations. In response, users report that they act in particular ways given their explanations and degree of certainty. We discuss how users, as part of their sensemaking practice around how algorithms work, engage in forms of improvisation. In addition, we argue that algorithm awareness leads to a more nuanced acknowledgement of inequality and power, including the power-laden roles of platforms themselves

    Gravitational fragmentation and the formation of brown dwarfs in stellar clusters

    We investigate the formation of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars through the gravitational fragmentation of infalling gas into stellar clusters. The gravitational potential of a forming stellar cluster provides the focus that attracts gas from the surrounding molecular cloud. Structures present in the gas grow, forming filaments flowing into the cluster centre. These filaments attain high gas densities due to the combination of the cluster potential and local self-gravity. The resultant Jeans masses are low, allowing the formation of very low-mass fragments. The tidal shear and high velocity dispersion present in the cluster preclude any subsequent accretion thus resulting in the formation of brown dwarfs or very low-mass stars. Ejections are not required as the brown dwarfs enter the cluster with high relative velocities, suggesting that their disc and binary properties should be similar to that of low-mass stars. This mechanism requires the presence of a strong gravitational potential due to the stellar cluster implying that brown dwarf formation should be more frequent in stellar clusters than in distributed populations of young stars.     AbstractPavlova lutheri, a marine microalga, is rich in the very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLCPUFAs) eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3) acids. Using an expressed sequence tag approach, we isolated a cDNA designated Pldes1, and encoding an amino acid sequence showing high similarity with polyunsaturated fatty acid front-end desaturases. Heterologous expression in yeast demonstrated that PlDES1 desaturated 22:5n-3 and 22:4n-6 into 22:6n-3 and 22:5n-6 respectively, and was equally active on both substrates. Thus, PlDES1 is a novel VLCPUFA Δ4-desaturase. Pldes1 expression is four-fold higher during the mid-exponential phase of growth compared to late exponential and stationary phases

    AVIRIS ground data processing system

    During the last year and a half, Feb. 1991 to Jun. 1992, a major upgrade of the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometers (AVIRIS) ground data processing system took place. Both the hardware and software components were changed significantly to improve the processing capacity and performance and to structure a data facility capable of handling the projected work load into the near future. A summary report of these changes and some projections for the future are provided. The objectives of the AVIRIS data facility are to decommutate and archive AVIRIS data and to provide raw or radiometrically calibrated data products to the science investigator. These primary objectives have not changed from the initial concepts. The upgrade effort has greatly improved the processing system. These objectives can now be accomplished in a more timely fashion at a reasonable cost and there is sufficient capacity to manage the current processing load and provide for future growth. The method of implementation added the flexibility to provide better service to the investigator and allow for future changes

The building is planned as two floors, with the fish market and multipurpose area on the first and an eatery, sitting area, balcony and facilities on the second. The building will be made of a light metal frame with panels to enclose the space and is designed with a folded glass panel that can be opened up to the outside, yet decrease wind pressure in a storm
