âDrivingâ innovation in construction organizations: a comparative case study of the design and construction of motor racing venues
The culture of high-performance racing, whether Formula One, Nascar, or sports cars represents the continuous push for better performance. The research focuses upon understanding how stakeholders designing and building motor racing venues experience the innovation process through both new and refurbishment projects. This paper will provide a review of the literature relative to the nature of innovations within the construction setting, considering a range of theoretical and methodological approaches. The context of innovative designs and high-performance facilities serves as a novel exploration given that the nature of the facilities seems to attract these innovative solutions. Given this seeming repeatability of pursuit and success in innovation on this project type suggests that the context allows construction firms to successfully mobilize their innovative ideas and construction expertise. Using the captured data from two case study projects; Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the Daytona International Speedway in the USA, we explore the phenomenon around the mobilization of innovation in these contexts. Data is collected through extensive, unstructured interviews with key leadership in both projects to explore the emergent nature of innovation and the evolving facility design, construction, and operations. Innovation is born, resides and lives within a loosely and tightly knit network of stakeholders. We will connect the discursive nature of innovation in such settings and projects back to the innovation literature
Learning Markov Decision Processes for Model Checking
Constructing an accurate system model for formal model verification can be
both resource demanding and time-consuming. To alleviate this shortcoming,
algorithms have been proposed for automatically learning system models based on
observed system behaviors. In this paper we extend the algorithm on learning
probabilistic automata to reactive systems, where the observed system behavior
is in the form of alternating sequences of inputs and outputs. We propose an
algorithm for automatically learning a deterministic labeled Markov decision
process model from the observed behavior of a reactive system. The proposed
learning algorithm is adapted from algorithms for learning deterministic
probabilistic finite automata, and extended to include both probabilistic and
nondeterministic transitions. The algorithm is empirically analyzed and
evaluated by learning system models of slot machines. The evaluation is
performed by analyzing the probabilistic linear temporal logic properties of
the system as well as by analyzing the schedulers, in particular the optimal

Time lower bounds for nonadaptive turnstile streaming algorithms
We say a turnstile streaming algorithm is "non-adaptive" if, during updates,
the memory cells written and read depend only on the index being updated and
random coins tossed at the beginning of the stream (and not on the memory
contents of the algorithm). Memory cells read during queries may be decided
upon adaptively. All known turnstile streaming algorithms in the literature are
non-adaptive.
We prove the first non-trivial update time lower bounds for both randomized
and deterministic turnstile streaming algorithms, which hold when the
algorithms are non-adaptive. While there has been abundant success in proving
space lower bounds, there have been no non-trivial update time lower bounds in
the turnstile model. Our lower bounds hold against classically studied problems
such as heavy hitters, point query, entropy estimation, and moment estimation.
In some cases of deterministic algorithms, our lower bounds nearly match known
upper bounds
Structural Refinement for the Modal nu-Calculus
We introduce a new notion of structural refinement, a sound abstraction of
logical implication, for the modal nu-calculus. Using new translations between
the modal nu-calculus and disjunctive modal transition systems, we show that
these two specification formalisms are structurally equivalent.
Using our translations, we also transfer the structural operations of
composition and quotient from disjunctive modal transition systems to the modal
nu-calculus. This shows that the modal nu-calculus supports composition and

Spectroscopic Constraints on the Form of the Stellar Cluster Mass Function
This contribution addresses the question of whether the initial cluster mass
function (ICMF) has a fundamental limit (or truncation) at high masses. The
shape of the ICMF at high masses can be studied using the most massive young
(<10 Myr) clusters, however this has proven difficult due to low-number
statistics. In this contribution we use an alternative method based on the
luminosities of the brightest clusters, combined with their ages. If a
truncation is present, a generic prediction (nearly independent of the cluster
disruption law adopted) is that the median age of bright clusters should be
younger than that of fainter clusters. In the case of an non-truncated ICMF,
the median age should be independent of cluster luminosity. Here, we present
optical spectroscopy of twelve young stellar clusters in the face-on spiral
galaxy NGC 2997. The spectra are used to estimate the age of each cluster, and
the brightness of the clusters is taken from the literature. The observations
are compared with the model expectations of Larsen (2009) for various ICMF
forms and both mass dependent and mass independent cluster disruption. While
there exists some degeneracy between the truncation mass and the amount of mass
independent disruption, the observations favour a truncated ICMF. For low or
modest amounts of mass independent disruption, a truncation mass of 5-6*10^5
Msun is estimated, consistent with previous determinations. Additionally, we
investigate possible truncations in the ICMF in the spiral galaxy M83, the
interacting Antennae galaxies, and the collection of spiral and dwarf galaxies
present in Larsen (2009) based on photometric catalogues taken from the
literature, and find that all catalogues are consistent with having a
(environmentally dependent) truncation in the cluster mass functions.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, in press, A&A Research Note
Hennessy-Milner Logic with Greatest Fixed Points as a Complete Behavioural Specification Theory
There are two fundamentally different approaches to specifying and verifying
properties of systems. The logical approach makes use of specifications given
as formulae of temporal or modal logics and relies on efficient model checking
algorithms; the behavioural approach exploits various equivalence or refinement
checking methods, provided the specifications are given in the same formalism
as implementations.
In this paper we provide translations between the logical formalism of
Hennessy-Milner logic with greatest fixed points and the behavioural formalism
of disjunctive modal transition systems. We also introduce a new operation of
quotient for the above equivalent formalisms, which is adjoint to structural
composition and allows synthesis of missing specifications from partial
implementations. This is a substantial generalisation of the quotient for
deterministic modal transition systems defined in earlier papers
Where is the Information Stored in Black Holes?
It is shown that many modes of the gravitational field exist only inside the
horizon of an extreme black hole in string theory. At least in certain cases,
the number of such modes is sufficient to account for the Bekenstein-Hawking
entropy. These modes are associated with sources which carry Ramond-Ramond
charge, and so may be viewed as the strong coupling limit of D-branes. Although
these sources naturally live at the singularity, they are well defined and
generate modes which extend out to the horizon. This suggests that the
information in an extreme black hole is not localized near the singularity or

Metal abundances at z<1.5: new measurements in sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers
Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-DLAs seen toward background quasars
provide the most detailed probes of elemental abundances. Somewhat
paradoxically these measurements are more difficult at lower redshifts due to
the atmospheric cut-off, and so a few years ago our group began a programme to
study abundances at z < 1.5 in quasar absorbers. In this paper, we present new
UVES observations of six additional quasar absorption line systems at z < 1.5,
five of which are sub-DLAs. We find solar or above solar metallicity, as
measured by the abundance of zinc, assumed not to be affected by dust, in two
sub-DLAs: one, towards Q0138-0005 with [Zn/H]=+0.28 +/- 0.16; the other towards
Q2335+1501 with [Zn/H]=+0.07 +/- 0.34. Relatively high metallicity was observed
in another system: Q0123-0058 with [Zn/H]=-0.45 +/- 0.20. Only for the one DLA
in our sample, in Q0449-1645, do we find a low metallicity, [Zn/H]=-0.96 +/-
0.08. We also note that in some of these systems large relative abundance
variations from component to component are observed in Si, Mn, Cr and Zn.Comment: 7 figures and 10 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
