The use of FLAC for the seismic evaluation of a concrete gravity dam including dam-water-sediments-foundation rock interaction

    Get PDF
Seismic safety of 65m-high Licodia Eubea gravity dam located in Southeastern Sicily (Italy) has been assessed by means of advanced dynamic analyses of the tallest cross-section of the dam. The analyses were performed with two-dimensional, plane strain, finite difference FLAC code, taking into consideration simultaneously the dam-water-sediments-foundation interaction. The analyses have been carried out for an earthquake scenario corresponding to the Collapse Limit State (CLS), using a set of seven natural accelerograms for the simulations (both vertical and horizontal components). The physical and mechanical parameters of the concrete and foundation rock were obtained from in situ and laboratory tests campaigns. A validation of the dynamic model in terms of fundamental mode vibration periods of the dam was carried out first. Then, linear analyses allowed to understand whether nonlinear analyses were necessary. From nonlinear analyses results, Licodia Eubea dam has been found to have an acceptable margin of safety for CLS. The implementation of nonlinearity at the dam-foundation interface reduced the tensile stress within the structure. The dam might experience limited sliding along its base, but its structural integrity would be preserved

PETROLOGICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE PRE-ERUPTIVE CONDITIONS OF LA SOMMATA BASALT AND BROWN TUFFS TEPHRA (AEOLIAN ISLANDS)

This work is focused on two key eruptions of Vulcano Island: 1) the most primitive magma of Vulcano erupted by the La Sommata scoria cone, a silica-undersaturated Ca-rich shoshonitic basalt with olivine-hosted primitive melt inclusions having an ultra-calcic character; 2) the most energetic eruptions of the whole Aeolian Archipelago, the Brown Tuffs (BT) eruptions, which produced several pyroclastic deposits, covering an ample age interval, spread out over a large portion of all Aeolian islands up to the northern coast of Sicily (Lucchi et al., 2008). By complementary studies of melt inclusions and experimental petrology, we pursued the following main objectives: (i) to constrain the pressure temperature-fluid activity during the ascent paths of La Sommata primitive magma and BT basaltic andesite; (ii) to experimentally investigate the influence of H2O in these magma and its effects on the phase relations; (iii) to try to depict a petrological model and to constrain the pre- eruptive conditions of these very different eruptions. In order to obtain the BT pre-eruptive H2O and CO2 contents, preliminarly to the experimental petrology, we performed several analyses on melt inclusions hosted in loose clinopyroxenes sampled from the BT deposits at Vulcano. This step greatly adjuvated the restriction of T, P, H2Omelt conditions for the later experimental petrology approach on BT composition

Nonlinear analysis of elastic high-shear deformable plane frames by a mixed FEM path-following approach

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the nonlinear analysis of high-shear deformable elastic plane frame, frequently used to model beam of composite materials, elastomeric beam-like bearings of bridge and seismic isolation, or to model DNA strands and polymer chains. The work uses a FEM approach based on a Cosserat-Timoshenko beam model with an exact geometrical description, evaluating all the axial, shear and bending contributions. It follows a mixed implementation of a Riks-path following locking-free strategy of analysis, exploring its implementation details and proving its effectiveness and reliability. At last the paper reports the quantitative and qualitative influence of shear contribution on known classical examples

Investigation of Noise Field and Velocity Profiles of an Afterburning Engine

    Get PDF
Sound pressure levels, frequency spectrum, and jet velocity profiles are presented for an engine-afterburner combination at various values of afterburner fuel - air ratio. At the high fuel-air ratios, severe low-frequency resonance was encountered which represented more than half the total energy in the sound spectrum. At similar thrust conditions, lower sound pressure levels were obtained from a current fighter air craft with a different afterburner configuration. The lower sound pressure levels are attributed to resonance-free afterburner operation and thereby indicate the importance of acoustic considerations in afterburner design
