    Nano-friction in cavity quantum electrodynamics

    The dynamics of cold trapped ions in a high-finesse resonator results from the interplay between the long-range Coulomb repulsion and the cavity-induced interactions. The latter are due to multiple scatterings of laser photons inside the cavity and become relevant when the laser pump is sufficiently strong to overcome photon decay. We study the stationary states of ions coupled with a mode of a standing-wave cavity as a function of the cavity and laser parameters, when the typical length scales of the two self-organizing processes, Coulomb crystallization and photon-mediated interactions, are incommensurate. The dynamics are frustrated and in specific limiting cases can be cast in terms of the Frenkel-Kontorova model, which reproduces features of friction in one dimension. We numerically recover the sliding and pinned phases. For strong cavity nonlinearities, they are in general separated by bistable regions where superlubric and stick-slip dynamics coexist. The cavity, moreover, acts as a thermal reservoir and can cool the chain vibrations to temperatures controlled by the cavity parameters and by the ions phase. These features are imprinted in the radiation emitted by the cavity, which is readily measurable in state-of-art setups of cavity quantum electrodynamics.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Modes of Oscillation in Radiofrequency Paul Traps

    We examine the time-dependent dynamics of ion crystals in radiofrequency traps. The problem of stable trapping of general three-dimensional crystals is considered and the validity of the pseudopotential approximation is discussed. We derive analytically the micromotion amplitude of the ions, rigorously proving well-known experimental observations. We use a method of infinite determinants to find the modes which diagonalize the linearized time-dependent dynamical problem. This allows obtaining explicitly the ('Floquet-Lyapunov') transformation to coordinates of decoupled linear oscillators. We demonstrate the utility of the method by analyzing the modes of a small `peculiar' crystal in a linear Paul trap. The calculations can be readily generalized to multispecies ion crystals in general multipole traps, and time-dependent quantum wavefunctions of ion oscillations in such traps can be obtained.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, v2 adds citations and small correction

    The importance of meteorological scales to forecast air pollution scenarios on coastal complex terrain

    Some of the meteorological approaches commonly considered in urban air pollution models do not take into account the importance of the smaller scales in the meteorology of complex-terrain coastal sites. The aim of this work is to estimate the impact of using the proper meteorological scales when simulating the behaviour of the pollutant concentrations emitted in the lower layers over coastal complex terrain areas. The availability of experimental measurements of a power plant plume near the Castellón conurbation (on the Spanish Mediterranean coast) has allowed us to use this plume as a tracer of opportunity of the lower atmosphere to check the results of a simulation exercise using the RAMS mesoscale model coupled to the HYPACT particle model. The results obtained show that in a complex-terrain coastal site, because of the strong effect of the meteorological interactions between the different scales on the integral advection and the turbulent dispersion of pollutants, using an inadequate scale to solve the meteorology can result in a very big gap in the simulation of lower-layer pollutant behaviour at urban scales

The interactions within the population are described by small world networks, ranging from ordered lattices to random graphs. For the more ordered systems, there is a fluctuating endemic state of low infection. At a finite value of the disorder of the network, we find a transition to self-sustained oscillations in the size of the infected subpopulation

    BiogeosciencesInternational audienceThe significant impact of dust deposition on het-erotrophic bacterial dynamics in the surface oligotrophic ocean has recently been evidenced. Considering the central role of bacteria in the microbial loop, it is likely that dust deposition also affects the structure and the functioning of the whole microbial food web. In the frame of the DUNE project, aiming to estimate the impact of dust deposition on the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea through mesocosm ex-periments, the main goal of the present paper was to as-sess how two successive dust deposition events affect the dynamics of the microbial food web. The first dust seeding delivered new P and N to the amended mesocosms and re-sulted in a pronounced stimulation of bacterial respiration. It also induced pronounced, but transient, changes in the bac-terial community composition. No significant effects were observed on the abundances of viruses and heterotrophic nanoflagellates. The second dust seeding also delivered new P and N to the amended mesocosms, but the effect on the microbial food web was very different. Bacterial respira-tion remained constant and bacterial abundance decreased. Compositional changes following the second seeding were minor compared to the first one. The decrease in bacterial abundance coincided with an increase in virus abundance, resulting in higher virus : bacteria ratios throughout the sec-ond seeding period. Our study shows that dust deposition to the surface oligotrophic ocean may involve important mod-ifications of the trophic links among the components of the microbial food web with presumed consequences on C and nutrient cycling

    Pharmacokinetic control on the release of antimicrobial drugs from pH-responsive electrospun wound dressings

    The acidic pH of healthy skin changes during wound healing due to the exposure of the inner dermal and subcutaneous tissue and due to the potential colonization of pathogenic bacteria. In chronic non-healing wounds, the pH values vary in a wide pH range but the appearance of an alkaline shift is common. After a wound is incurred, neutral pH in the wound bed is characteristic of the activation of the cascade of regenerative and remodeling processes. In order to adjust drug release to the specific pH of the wound, herein, drug-loaded wound dressings having pH-responsiveness containing antiseptics and antibiotics and exerting different release kinetics in order to have a perfect match between the drug release kinetics, and the pH conditions of each wound type, were developed. We have fabricated drug-loaded electrospun nanofibers loaded with the antiseptic chlorhexidine, with the broad-spectrum antibiotic rifampicin, and with the antimicrobial of natural origin thymol, using the pH-dependent methacrylic acid copolymer Eudragit® L100-55, which dissolves at pH > 5.5; those drugs were loaded within Eudragit® S100, which dissolves at pH > 7 and, finally, within the methacrylic ester copolymer Eudragit® RS100 which is pH independent and slowly erodes and releases its contained cargo. The antibacterial action of those advanced wound dressings has been evaluated against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus Newman strain expressing the coral green fluorescent protein (cGFP), as a model of a Gram-positive bacteria, and against E. coli S17 strain as a model of a Gram-negative bacteria. It was demonstrated that those combinational products integrate in one device the required characteristics for a wound dressing with the therapeutic action of a contained active principle and can be selected depending on the wound acidic or alkaline status for its appropriated management. © 2022 The Author(s

    Study of the virus vector genus Trichodorus (Diphtherophorina, Trichodoridae) from the Iberian Peninsula, an apparent centre of speciation

    Trichodoridae are polyphagous root ectoparasites occurring worldwide. Their major pest status is as virus vector of Tobraviruses. Currently, the family has 102 species classified within 6 genera. The genus Trichodorus is the largest in number of species (56) and predominantly occurs in temperate regions. Traditional morphology-based taxonomy revealed for Europe, a very high species diversity within the Iberian Peninsula, comprising about one fifth of all Trichodoridae described. Characteristic for this fauna is the presence of a morpho-species group within Trichodorus, characterized in males by slightly ventrally curved spicules with a mid-blade constriction with bristles and females with relatively large vaginal sclerotized pieces, quadrangular to triangular in shape. Recent surveys for Trichodoridae in cultivated and natural environments in Southern Spain and compared with the fauna from Portugal revealed four new species of Trichodorus, three of them belonging to this morpho-species group. Molecular analyses based on nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S and partial 18S gene) supported not only the new species but also the morpho-species group as a separate clade. The integrated approach of morphology based taxonomy with molecular and biogeographic data enhanced the accuracy of the observed biodiversity and strengthen the hypothesis of the Iberian Peninsula as a center of speciation.The Society of Nematologists (SON

A comparative morphological study was carried out together with molecular analyses based on nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S and partial 18S gene). Characteristic for the Iberian Peninsula is the high number of morphologically closely resembling species but clearly separated molecularly (cryptic species), characterized in males by slightly ventrally curved spicules with a mid-blade constriction with bristles and females with relatively large vaginal sclerotized pieces, quadrangular to triangular in shape. Molecular analyses demonstrated that D2-D3 expansion segments are suitable diagnostic markers for Trichodoridae. Comparative morphology and molecular analyses provide support for the Iberian Peninsula as an apparent centre of speciation.     Occupational Health and Safety Prevention Plan in Water Treatment Plant

    The research was carried out at the "El Guarumo" drinking water plant located in Santa Ana, province of Manabí, Ecuador. The objective of the investigation was the proposal of a plan of prevention of occupational risks that allows the management of the labor risks in said plant. The main tools used were: survey, interview, checklist, LEST questionnaire for the diagnosis of the current situation in terms of working conditions, the risk identification matrix and the binary method of risk assessment. The main results obtained were the identification of the risks in their different categories, observing that the critical risk factors are related to the physical overexertion, the uncomfortable postures and the manual lifting of the load. Among the important risks are falling objects, skin contact with toxic substances and mental overwork, closely related to work pressures and job security? It was possible to carry out the proposal of preventive and corrective measures in order to properly manage the risks and contribute to the safety and health of the workers
