Influence of sex hormones on the periodontium

Objectives : Sex hormones have long been considered to play an influential role on periodontal tissues, bone turnover rate, wound healing and periodontal disease progression. The objectives of this review article are to (1) address the link between sex hormones and the periodontium, (2) analyse how these hormones influence the periodontium at different life times and (3) discuss the effects of hormone supplements/replacement on the periodontium. Materials and Methods : Two autonomous searches were performed in English language utilizing Medline, Premedline and Pubmed as the online databases. Publications up to 2002 were selected and further reviewed. In addition, a manual search was also performed including specific related journals and books. Results : It is certain that sexual hormones play a key role in periodontal disease progression and wound healing. More specifically, these effects seem to differentiate by gender as well as lifetime period. In addition, the influence of sex hormones can be minimized with good plaque control and with hormone replacement. Conclusion : Despite profound research linking periodontal condition with sex hormones kinetics, more definitive molecular mechanisms and therapy still remain to be determined.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75598/1/j.1600-051X.2003.00055.x.pd

Reproductive and sex hormonal factors and oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma: A pooled analysis

Background: The rapidly rising incidence and the striking male predominance are as yet unexplained features of oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma. Few and underpowered studies have examined the impact of female reproductive factors on risk of these adenocarcinomas in women. We therefore pooled data on women from four populationbased case-control studies to examine the association of female reproductive and sex hormonal factors with oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma. Methods: Data on women from case-control studies conducted in Ireland, the United Kingdom (UK), Australia and United States of America (USA) were pooled. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for a range of reproductive factors, adjusted for age, study and major risk factors for oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma. Results: We included 218 cases and 862 controls. Among parous women, a reduced risk of oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma was found after breastfeeding (OR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.37–0.92) and the risk decreased with increased duration of breastfeeding (>12 months OR = 0.42, 95% CI = 0.23–0.77). The endogenous reproductive factors such as parity, menstruation, history of pregnancy and the exogenous factors such as use of oral contraceptives and of hormone replacement therapy were not statistically significantly associated with oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that breastfeeding is associated with a decreased risk of oesophageal and gastric junction adenocarcinoma. The potential mechanism of this association warrants further investigation. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserve

The Cult of Arensnuphis in Thebes in the Graeco-Roman Period

    No full text
By the early 3rd century BC the cult of the god Chnum-Arensnuphis, for whom sanctuaries and cult personnel are attested in Elephantine between c. 685–349 BC, had evolved in the Theban area into a cult of the autonomous god Arensnuphis. In the milieu of the mortuary workers in Western Thebes he was worshipped in his own chapel, and newborn children in Thebes were named after him. A few decades later the deity appears in Elephantine as “Lord of the Abaton”. His connection with the burial site of Osiris on the island of Biggeh and his identification with Horus as protector of Osiris’ remains, may explain why his cult flourished in Medinet Habu, the location of another famous tomb of Osiris. It appears that only in a later stage the Egyptian god Arensnuphis crossed the frontier into Nubia, where he was similarly regarded as a god related to the Abaton. An active Theban cult of Arensnuphis certainly existed until the late 2nd century BC, when minor priests in Medinet Habu possessed several shrines of the god. After the late 2nd century BC direct evidence that Arensnuphis still received cult in the Theban area is lacking, but indirect onomastic data illustrate the persistence of his worship: the latest securely dated Theban documents containing personal names compounded with the name Arensnuphis are dated around AD 130.status: publishe

The Development of the Greek Dynastic Cult under Ptolemy V

© 2014, by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston. The dating formula of P.Stan. Class. Inv. 2 provides important information about the development of the Greek dynastic cult in the years 199-193 BC. (1) The Theoi Soteres were officially omitted from the dating formulae of the Greek papyri. (2) Eucharistos remained the official cult epithet in Alexandria till the year 193. (3) The apotheosis of Ptolemy V should probably be dated between 3 August and 11 October 199. (4) Cleopatra was not immediately incorporated in the dynastic cult after her marriage with Ptolemy in winter 194/3.status: publishe
