    Shape optimization for surface functionals in Navier--Stokes flow using a phase field approach

    We consider shape and topology optimization for fluids which are governed by the Navier--Stokes equations. Shapes are modelled with the help of a phase field approach and the solid body is relaxed to be a porous medium. The phase field method uses a Ginzburg--Landau functional in order to approximate a perimeter penalization. We focus on surface functionals and carefully introduce a new modelling variant, show existence of minimizers and derive first order necessary conditions. These conditions are related to classical shape derivatives by identifying the sharp interface limit with the help of formally matched asymptotic expansions. Finally, we present numerical computations based on a Cahn--Hilliard type gradient descent which demonstrate that the method can be used to solve shape optimization problems for fluids with the help of the new approach

    Traffic-related air pollution and obesity formation in children: a longitudinal, multilevel analysis.

    BackgroundBiologically plausible mechanisms link traffic-related air pollution to metabolic disorders and potentially to obesity. Here we sought to determine whether traffic density and traffic-related air pollution were positively associated with growth in body mass index (BMI = kg/m2) in children aged 5-11 years.MethodsParticipants were drawn from a prospective cohort of children who lived in 13 communities across Southern California (N = 4550). Children were enrolled while attending kindergarten and first grade and followed for 4 years, with height and weight measured annually. Dispersion models were used to estimate exposure to traffic-related air pollution. Multilevel models were used to estimate and test traffic density and traffic pollution related to BMI growth. Data were collected between 2002-2010 and analyzed in 2011-12.ResultsTraffic pollution was positively associated with growth in BMI and was robust to adjustment for many confounders. The effect size in the adjusted model indicated about a 13.6% increase in annual BMI growth when comparing the lowest to the highest tenth percentile of air pollution exposure, which resulted in an increase of nearly 0.4 BMI units on attained BMI at age 10. Traffic density also had a positive association with BMI growth, but this effect was less robust in multivariate models.ConclusionsTraffic pollution was positively associated with growth in BMI in children aged 5-11 years. Traffic pollution may be controlled via emission restrictions; changes in land use that promote jobs-housing balance and use of public transit and hence reduce vehicle miles traveled; promotion of zero emissions vehicles; transit and car-sharing programs; or by limiting high pollution traffic, such as diesel trucks, from residential areas or places where children play outdoors, such as schools and parks. These measures may have beneficial effects in terms of reduced obesity formation in children

    Uso pedagógico de Facebook como recurso para el aprendizaje colaborativo en el curso de dibujo geométrico de una universidad de Lima Metropolitana

    La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar el uso del Facebook como un recurso pedagógico para el aprendizaje colaborativo en el curso de Dibujo Geométrico. Este estudio optó por una metodología de enfoque mixto. Para el recojo de información se utilizaron los instrumentos de encuesta y entrevista semiestructurada, los que permitieron obtener y analizar importantes datos cuantitativos y cualitativos. La muestra constó de 35 alumnos y 5 docentes de la Facultad de Arte y Diseño de una universidad de Lima Metropolitana. Los resultados indican que Facebook es una herramienta de comunicación potente e inmediata, la cual provee herramientas necesarias para compartir información. También se le considera como una herramienta de carácter colectivo que permite difundir mensajes a todos los miembros por igual y como complemento de las clases presenciales. La interacción entre los alumnos y los docentes se consideró lo más importante dentro del aprendizaje colaborativo, entre lo que se puede mencionar el envío de material visual y las consultas fuera de clase por parte de los estudiantes.The aim of this research was to analyze the usage of Facebook as a pedagogical resource for collaborative learning in the course of Geometric Drawing. This study opted for a mixed approach methodology. For the compilation of information, the semi-structured interview and survey instruments were used, which allowed obtaining and analyzing important quantitative and qualitative data. The sample consisted of 35 students and 5 teachers from the Faculty of Art and Design of a university in Metropolitan Lima. The results indicate that Facebook is a powerful and immediate communication tool, which provides necessary tools to share information. It is also regarded as a collective tool that allows to spread messages to all members equally and as a complement to face-to-face classes. The interaction between the students and the teachers was considered the most important part of collaborative learning, among which we can mention the sending of visual material and the out-of-class consultations by the studentsTrabajo de investigació

    IL23R and IL12B SNPs and Haplotypes Strongly Associate with Crohn's Disease Risk in a New Zealand Population

    DNA samples from 339 Crohn's disease (CD) and 407 randomly selected controls from the Auckland (New Zealand) IBD project, were genotyped for five common single nucleotide polymorphisms in IL-23R (rs11805303, rs7517847, rs1343151, rs11209026, and rs10889677) and two in IL-12B (rs1363670 and rs6887695). While the IL-12B variants did not show an overall association and other IL23R variants led to minor changes in the risk of CD, rs1343151 and/or rs7517847 variants in the IL-23R gene strongly reduced the risk of developing CD at both allelic and genotype levels. A significantly decreased risk of first diagnosis of childhood CD was observed in individuals carrying the A allele of rs1343151, or between 17–40 y in individuals carrying the G allele in rs7517847 of IL-23R. A significantly decreased risk of ileocolonic or structuring disease was observed in individuals carrying the A allele in either rs11209026 or rs1343151, or the G allele in rs7517847 of IL-23R, and when such individuals did develop the disease, they were unlikely to require a bowel resection. Certain haplotypes very strongly modified risk. There was evidence for interactions of IL-23R variants with the NOD2 wild-type (d/d) genotype. Down-regulating the function of the IL-23R gene may decrease CD risk in the normal population

    Discrete Flavour Symmetries in Light of T2K

    We show that a non-vanishing angle theta_13 of order 0.1 can be predicted in the framework of discrete flavour symmetries. We assume that left-handed leptons transform as triplets under a group G_f which is broken in such a way that neutrino and charged lepton sectors remain invariant under the subgroups G_nu and G_e of G_f, respectively. In this limit mixing angles and the Dirac CP violating phase delta_CP are determined. By choosing G_f=Delta(6 n^2) (n=4,8), G_nu=Z_2 x Z_2 and G_e=Z_3 we find sin^2 theta_13=0.045(0.011) for n=4(8). At the same time theta_23 and theta_12 remain close to their experimental best fit values, particularly in the case n=8, where sin^2 theta_23 = 0.424 and sin^2 theta_12 = 0.337. delta_CP is predicted to be 0 or pi so that CP is conserved in our examples.Comment: 1+11 pages, 1 figure; v2: matches journal versio

While absolute PC and PN export rates were dependent on the method used to obtain the element/234Th ratio, regional trends were consistent across measurement techniques. The highest C fixation rates were associated with diatom-dominated surface waters. Yet, the highest export efficiencies occurred in picoplankton-dominated surface waters, where relative concentrations of diazotrophs were also elevated. Our results add to the increasing body of literature that picoplankton- and diazotroph-dominated food webs in subtropical regions can be characterized by enhanced export efficiencies relative to food webs dominated by larger phytoplankton, e.g., diatoms, in low productivity pico/nanoplankton-dominated regions, where small particles are major contributors to particle export. Findings from this region are compared globally and provide insights into the efficiency of downward particle transport of carbon and associated nutrients in a warmer ocean where picoplankton and diazotrophs may dominate. Therefore, we argue the necessity of collecting multiple particle sizes used to convert 234Th fluxes into carbon or other elemental fluxes, including <50 µm, since they can play an important role in vertical fluxes, especially in oligotrophic environments.
