Holy War, Crusade and "Reconquista" in recent anglo-american historiography about the Iberian Peninsula

In contemporary Western societies, who are going through a neo-romantic stage, the Crusades have led to an immense literature and a remarkable popularity. In the scientific field, this phenomenon has encouraged the debate on the ideological and cultural issues surrounding Crusade. Since that in the Iberian Peninsula had developed fights between Muslims and Christians before 1096, it is inevitable that historians have wondered about the influence of the reconquest in the origins of the crusading movement. In this paper, we critized the widespread view among Anglo-Saxon historians, according to which secular piety and spirituality were instrumental in the development of the First Crusade, and struggles carried out in the Iberian Peninsula did not influence in the extraordinary adhesion of the European nobles to this issue. In addition, other concepts that may help to explain the intensity of the response, such as “aristocratic networks,” and at the same time help to understand the weight of the Hispanic experience in this movement

Resumen: El artículo constituye un homenaje a Juan Fernando Utrilla Utrilla, historiador medievalista de la Universidad de Zaragoza. Se examina su extensa trayectoria profesional dentro de los cambios experimentados por el sistema universitario español entre 1970 y 2020. Se describen extensamente sus logros académicos y su impacto en la investigación en historia medieval del reino de Aragón. Palabras clave: historiografía, historia medieval, historia de Aragón, universidad española, sociología de los historiadores. Abstract: The paper is a tribute to Juan Fernando Utrilla Utrilla, historian and medievalist from the University of Zaragoza. His extensive professional career is examined within the changes that have taken place in the Spanish university system between 1970 and 2020. His academic achievements and their impact on research in medieval history of the kingdom of Aragon are widely described. Frontera y conquista feudal en el valle del Ebro desde una perspectiva local (Tauste, Zaragoza, 1086-1200)

[ES] Frontera y conquista feudal son dos conceptos que se utilizan bastante, especialmente por historiadores anglosajones, para describir la evolución social y cultural en las zonas de contacto con el Islam. Este artículo pretende explorar esta perspectiva desde un punto de vista metodológico peculiar, el análisis local. Para ello, estudiamos la evolución de una localidad cercana a Zaragoza, Tauste, desde el momento en que se hace sentir la presión feudal hasta su conquista, subrayando la creación de las costumbres locales y la organización eclesiástica, como factores de normalización de los procesos sociales.[EN] Frontier and feudal conquest are two concepts that are utilized enough, especially by Anglo-saxon historians, to describe the cultural and social evolution in the zones of contact with the Islam.
