The Ultimate Injustice: States\u27 Failure to Take Steps to Prevent Wrongful Convictions and, when Wrongful Convictions are Exposed, to Provide Adequate Assistance to Exonerees

Among the many rights guaranteed by the Constitution are the rights to a presumption of innocence, equal protection, due process, a speedy trial, a trial by jury, and legal counsel, if indigent and charged with a serious crime. But those rights do not ensure that the justice system succeeds every time. The United States has exonerated over 3,000 individuals since 1989. The exonerees have collectedly lost over 26,700 years of their lives. Each exoneration has provided insight into the causes of wrongful convictions, the issues with current compensation laws, and even the changes that need to be implemented to avoid further injustice. Additionally, there are thousands of individuals still incarcerated today for wrongful convictions. Therefore, it calls into question what America is doing to prevent wrongful convictions and to compensate its victims as they transition back into the community. The answer is not enough

Un ensayo inédito de Bartomeu Forteza: La poesia d’En Joan Alcover

El objetivo principal de este trabajo es dar a conocer un ensayo inédito de Bartomeu Forteza (1894-1957) sobre la figura y la obra de Joan Alcover, así como presentar someramente a su autor, un poeta, traductor y ensayista mallorquín cuyas colaboraciones en prensa contemporánea revelan las principales preocupaciones políticas y estéticas de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El ensayo, premiado en su momento por el Institut d’Estudis Catalans, resulta de especial interés por varias razones: en primer lugar, certifica la existencia de una crítica literaria catalana durante los años cincuenta; en segundo lugar, constituye el primer intento de elaborar una monografía sobre Joan Alcover, principal autor, junto a Miquel Costa i Llobera, de la llamada Escola Mallorquina, y, por último, anticipa algunas de las conclusiones que la crítica posterior ha desarrollado respecto a este autor: el clasicismo, la pulcritud formal, el tratamiento simbólico del paisaje, la influencia de la lírica francesa.The main purpose of this article is to present an unpublished essay by Bartomeu Forteza (1894-1957) about the figure and literary work of Joan Alcover; it also includes a brief presentation of the author, a lyric poet, translator and essayist whose periodical press articles show the recurrent, polític and aesthetic considerations of the first middle of the XX century. This essay, winner of and Institut d’Estudis Catalans award, has an special interest for many reasons: it proves the existence of a Catalan literary criticism during the fifties, it is the first specific monography about Joan Alcover, the most important author –with Miquel Costa i Llobera– of the Escola Mallorquina; and, finally, his author advances some of the conclusions of later criticism: the refined style care, the clasicism, the simbolic treatment of the nature in poems, the influence of the French poetry

La Recepción de la zarzuela en la Barcelona de 1898

L'article següent recull alguns aspectes tractats en el meu treball de màster «Rebotica de música / (Barcelona 1898) / Lo mejor contra la crisis: una hora de zarzuela», l'objectiu del qual era mesurar, amb dades objectives i de manera quantitativa, el pes de la sarsuela en la cartellera d'espectacles d'aquella Barcelona de 1898. Com a temes previs, hem realitzat una breu exposició del context històric, comentat el cost de les entrades als diversos especles tacles i tractat el problema de les múltiples denominacions que hem pogut trobar per a les obres que hem agrupat sota el terme popular de sarsuela. Posteriorment, veurem quines foren les obres de més èxit, els seus autors més representatius, les sarsueles en català que s'oferiren i algun exemple de la relació entre lletres i/o contextualització de la trama, amb la situació bèl·lica i política per la qual travessava el país. Pel fet de tractar-se d'un estudi quantitatiu, aquest s'ha realitzat a partir de les xifres obtingudes amb el buidatge de la secció d'espectacles de La Vanguardia i La Dinastía, i s'ha establert, a partir d'aquí, la comparació entre l'oferta de sarsuela i la d'òpera, teatre, pantomima, etc. La conclusió final que confirmava la hipòtesi de partida és que, basant-nos en les xifres manejades, i més enllà d'altre tipus de consideracions, la sarsuela va ser durant aquell any l'espectacle preferit pel públic.El presente artículo recoge algunos aspectos tratados en mi trabajo de máster «Rebotica de música / (Barcelona 1898) / Lo mejor contra la crisis: una hora de zarzuela», cuyo objetivo era medir, con datos objetivos y de forma cuantitativa, el peso de la zarzuela en la cartelera de espectáculos de aquella Barcelona de 1898. Como temas previos, hemos realizado una breve exposición del contexto histórico, comentado el coste de las entradas a los diferentes espectáculos y tratado el problema de las múltiples denominaciones que hemos podido encontrar para las obras que hemos agrupado bajo el término popular de zarzuela. Posteriormente, veremos cuáles fueron las obras de más éxito, sus autores más representativos, las zarzuelas en catalán que se ofrecieron y algún ejemplo de la relación entre letras y/o contextualización de la trama, con la situación bélica y política por la que atravesaba el país. Por tratarse de un estudio cuantitativo, el mismo se ha realizado a partir de las cifras obtenidas con el vaciado de la sección de espectáculos de La Vanguardia y La Dinastía, estableciendo a partir de ahí la comparación entre la oferta de zarzuela y la de ópera, teatro, pantomima, etc. La conclusión final que confirmaba la hipótesis de partida fue que, basándonos en las cifras manejadas, y más allá de otro tipo de consideraciones, la zarzuela fue durante aquel año el espectáculo preferido por el público.This article contains some aspects covered by my Masters study Rebotica de música / (Barcelona 1898) / Lo mejor contra la crisis: una hora de zarzuela, whose aim was to measure, quantitatively and using objective data, the significance of the Spanish style of operetta known as zarzuela in terms of the shows on offer in Barcelona in 1898. First of all, there is a brief explanation of the historical background, commenting on the different ticket prices for the shows and dealing with the problem of the many different names given to the pieces we have grouped together under the popular term of zarzuela. We then analyse which shows were the most successful, as well as their most representative authors, the zarzuelas that were performed in Catalan and provide an example of the relationship between the words and/or plot contextualisation and the conflictive and political situation affecting the country at the time. As this is a quantitative study, the data were obtained by mining the entertainment sections of the La Vanguardia and La Dinastía newspapers, thereby comparing the zarzuela shows on offer with those of opera, plays, pantomime, etc. The final conclusion, which confirmed the initial hypothesis, was that, based on the data analysed and aside from other considerations, the zarzuela was the most popular show with audiences that year

Visible light enhances the antimicrobial effect of some essential oils

The photodisinfection is a topical, broad spectrum antimicrobial technology, targeting bacteria, virus, fungi, and protozoa effective for single cells as for biofilms. Natural molecules have been studied less than synthetic agents in the process but they are currently receiving great interest. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate for the first time if non-coherent blue and red light enhances the antimicrobial activity of some essential oils when standard strains for antibiotic or fungicide tests are enlightened in vitro. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans collection strains were irradiated with monochromatic visible light from light emitting diodes in the presence of 5% and 0.5% eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oils. Microbial levels were measured by plate count on culture media. In this preliminary report, the results differ according to the kind and concentration of antimicrobial oils, the wavelength of light, and the prokaryotic or eukaryotic microorganism. The results support the idea that mainly blue light enhances the innate antimicrobial activity of the essential oils, especially phenols, and could offer a very efficient and natural way to combat microorganisms in several industries and medical applications.Postprint (author's final draft
