    Management of the migration process of a TVET college to the Department of Higher Education and Training

    The aim of this study was to investigate the management of the function shift of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Colleges at the Department of Higher Education and Training. When the function shift of TVET Colleges took place, it provided an opportunity to research a phenomenon and obtain data that were not previously researched, as this was the first ever function shift or migration of colleges from the Department of Basic Education to the Department of Higher Education and Training. As such, this research not only explores a new phenomenon but also contributes to the body of knowledge regarding TVET in South Africa. This research was conducted at a TVET College in Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. A qualitative, phenomenological study was conducted. The instruments for collecting data were individual and focus group interviews. Field notes were compiled during the various interviews, as deemed necessary by the researcher. All interviews were recorded digitally. The said digital recordings were transcribed and emanating themes were identified. Managers were selected as the interviewees. As this research was based on the management of the function shift, they were the most appropriate choice. A sample of staff was also interviewed, as two separate focus groups, to balance the scope and extent of the data, thus attempting to not only view the managerial paradigm as the sole reality. Findings made from the data were that the function shift was preceded by a previous migration of staff. That migration, however, saw colleges remaining in the same educational stream or level namely that of basic education. The staff at colleges, or technical colleges as they were called at the time, were previously employed by the State. This changed when the State created governing bodies for colleges or college councils, as they are known. Technical Colleges were then renamed Further Education and Training Colleges. These colleges were reporting to the Department of Education which saw a name change to the Department of Basic Education, as explained above. Employees were given the opportunity to migrate from State employment to council employment, which most staff members did. These college councils were later found to be dysfunctional, and the State arranged for colleges to be returned to the auspices of the State, but this time round they were usurped in the newly formed Department of Higher Education and Training. From a management perspective, the function shift was successful with minor challenges. Thus the staff felt that they did not receive adequate communication, thereby adversely affecting their financial positions. The researcher recommends further research among TVET Colleges regarding the management of this function shift. It is also recommended that all current channels of communication with staff be revisited, and improvement therein pursued, where possible. A final recommendation is that managers involved in a function shift be subject to a refresher course in change management before a function shift is implemented.Educational Leadership and ManagementM.     Audit of efficacy of CoartemTM to clear plasmodium falciparum malaria parasitaemia at single forty-two day follow-up

    Background; A study, which included a follow-up study, was undertaken to assess the efficacy of CoartemTM tablets (20 mg artemether and 120 mg lumefantrine – Novartis South Africa (Pty) Ltd) to clear plasmodium falciparum malaria parasitaemia at a single 42-day follow-up, with 42 days being chosen in order to detect early emergence of resistance. The study was done at Ndumo Clinic and Mosvold Hospital in the Ingwavuma District of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in January/February 2002. Method: The study included 37 patients presenting to Ndumo Clinic and two presenting to Mosvold Hospital with uncomplicated malaria diagnosed by symptoms and a positive immunochromographic test (ICT) for plasmodium falciparum. The main outcome measures were done using a Trophozoite count on thick film and polymerase chain reaction parasite analysis of blood spot at day 42. Results: Only 31 of the 37 recruited patients were confirmed to be suffering from malaria by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of the 31, 24 returned for follow-up. One patient had parasitaemia at day 33, but tested negative at day 42 after re-treatment with Coartem™. It was not determined whether this patient was suffering from a recrudescence or re-infection of falciparum malaria. All the other returning patients tested negative for falciparum malaria on blood film and PCR examination. Conclusions : CoartemTM still appears to be an effective treatment for falciparum malaria.     Facilitating the self-efficacy of primary school teachers in Mpumalanga : a perspective from lifelong learning

    The aim of this research was to make recommendations on how to facilitate a healthy sense of Computer Self-Efficacy (CSE) in teachers of a primary school in South Africa. A literature study was conducted to determine a theoretical framework for the study. Thereafter a mixed method design was used to conduct an empirical investigation. This was done by means of focus group interviews, questionnaires and an observational narrative. The most important finding was that the teachers who participated in the research were professional and enlightened about the value of technology. They agreed that although daunted by the idea of technology it is essential for them to become proficient in the use of computers. The researcher came to the conclusion that the main obstacle that stands between the participants and technological proficiency was a weak sense of CSE. Recommendations were made on how one could use extrinsic motivation to introduce new technology in such a way as to enhance self-efficacy and as result computer self-efficacy.Curriculum and Instructional StudiesM. An attempt has been made to include most relevant data up to the end of 1987, and to update some earlier reviews existing on the subject.     Field evaluation of a malaria rapid diagnostic test (ICT Pf)

    Background. Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (MRDTs) are quickand easy to perform and useful for diagnosing malaria in primary health care settings. In South Africa most malaria infections are due to Plasmodium falciparum, and HRPII-based MRDTs have been used since 2001. Previous studies in Africa showed variability in sensitivity and specificity of HRPIIbased MRDTs; hence, we conducted a field evaluation in Limpopo province to determine the accuracy of the MRDTcurrently used in public sector clinics and hospitals.Methods. A cross-sectional observational study was conductedto determine the sensitivity and specificity of an ICT Pf MRDT. We tested 405 patients with fever with ICT Pf MRDT and compared the results with blood film microscopy (the gold standard).Results. The overall sensitivity of the ICT Pf MRDT was 99.48% (95% confidence interval (CI) 96.17 - 100%), while specificity was 96.26% (95% CI 94.7 - 100%). The positive predictive value of the test was 98.48 (99% CI 98.41 - 100%), and the negative predictive value was 99.52% (95% CI 96.47 – 100%).Conclusions. The ICT Pf MRDT is an appropriate test to use in the field in South Africa where laboratory facilities are not available. It has a high degree of sensitivity and acceptable level of specificity in accordance with the World Health Organization criteria. However, sensitivity of MRDT at low levels of parasitaemia

    The conservation status of subtropical transitional thicket, and regeneration through seeding of shrubs in the Xeric succulent thicket of the Eastern Cape

    The historically poorly conserved subtropical transitional thicket (STT) of the Eastern Cape is overutilised by domestic stock and game in the more xeric areas, and has shown no signs of recovery from this grazing pressure. It has been postulated that no regeneration through seeding occurs. This project was undertaken to determine: 1) how much STT has disappeared between 1950 and present, and what the current conservation status is; and 2) whether regeneration of the xeric succulent thicket is taking place through seeding, and if so, where. The study was conducted at the Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve near Grahamstown. Approximately one-third less STT was mapped in this study, based on 1981 Landsat images, than was mapped in 1950. Approximately 10 % of all remaining STT is conserved. The order Kaffrarian thicket is poorly conserved. Newly germinated seedlings of a wide range of shrub species occurred under the canopies of a wide range of shrubs which served as nurse plants, throughout a gradient of veld condition. Seedlings of Portulacaria afra, the dominant shrub in xeric succulent thicket, were most common. Similarly all saplings recorded in a survey of saplings were associated with bushclumps. One-third of all saplings have the potential to contribute to the spread of bushclumps. Regeneration of xeric succulent thicket through seeding probably does occur, contrary to current ideas. Ptareoxylon obliquum was the most common sapling, despite mature trees now being scarce following earlier heavier utilisation . P. obliquum was also the nurse plant which supported the highest density of newly germinated seedlings. The possible role of P. obliquum in the functioning of xeric succulent thicket is discussed. The confinement of seedlings and saplings to areas under the canopies of trees and shrubs implies that the xeric succulent thicket will not recover rapidly if allowed to rest. Active management techniques will be necessary if rapid recovery is required. Bare areas between bushclumps may no longer be suitable germination habitats because of high Al concentrations. There was no evidence to support the idea that germination and establishment of shrubs in clear areas is linked to episodic climatic events. Dung middens of recently reintroduced black rhinoceros may however aid in germination of seeds and establishment of seedlings under certain climatic conditions. Recommendations for further studies, based on the findings of this project, are made. Possible management techniques aimed at the rapid recovery of this veld are suggested, and management proposals for the Sam Knott Nature Reserve/Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve complex are made

    DNA Metabarcoding and Isolation by Baiting Complement Each Other in Revealing Phytophthora Diversity in Anthropized and Natural Ecosystems

    Isolation techniques supplemented by sequencing of DNA from axenic cultures have provided a robust methodology for the study of Phytophthora communities in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Recently, metabarcoding approaches have emerged as new paradigms for the detection of Phytophthora species in environmental samples. In this study, Illumina DNA metabarcoding and a conventional leaf baiting isolation technique were compared to unravel the variability of Phytophthora communities in different environments. Overall, 39 rhizosphere soil samples from a natural, a semi-natural and a horticultural small-scale ecosystem, respectively, were processed by both baiting and metabarcoding. Using both detection techniques, 28 out of 39 samples tested positive for Phytophthora. Overall, 1,406,613 Phytophthora internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences and 155 Phytophthora isolates were obtained, which grouped into 21 taxa, five retrieved exclusively by baiting (P. bilorbang; P. cryptogea; P. gonapodyides; P. parvispora and P. pseudocryptogea), 12 exclusively by metabarcoding (P. asparagi; P. occultans; P. psycrophila; P. syringae; P. aleatoria/P. cactorum; P. castanetorum/P. quercina; P. iranica-like; P. unknown sp. 1; P. unknown sp. 2; P. unknown sp. 3; P. unknown sp. 4; P. unknown sp. 5) and four with both techniques (P. citrophthora, P. multivora, P. nicotianae and P. plurivora). Both techniques complemented each other in describing the variability of Phytophthora communities from natural and managed ecosystems and revealing the presence of rare or undescribed Phytophthora taxa

    Phytophthora austrocedri in Argentina and co-Inhabiting phytophthoras: roles of anthropogenic and abiotic factors in species distribution and diversity

    This work reports the first survey of Phytophthora diversity in the forests soils of Andean Patagonia. It also discusses the role of anthropogenic impact on Phytophthora distribution inferred from the findings on Phytophthora diversity and on the distribution of Phytophthora austrocedri-diseased forests. Invasive pathogen species threatening ecosystems and human activities contribute to their entry and spread. Information on pathogens already established, and early detection of potential invasive ones, are crucial to disease management and prevention. Phytophthora austrocedri causes the most damaging forest disease in Patagonia, affecting the endemic species Austrocedrus chilensis (D. Don) Pic. Sern. and Bizzarri. However, the relationship between anthropogenic impacts and the disease distribution has not been analyzed enough. The aims of this work were: to evaluate Phytophthora diversity in soils of Andean Patagonia using a metabarcoding method, and analyze this information in relation to soil type and land use; to assess the distribution of Austrocedrus disease over time in relation to anthropogenic and abiotic gradients in an area of interest; and to discuss the role of human activities in Phytophthora spread. High throughput Illumina sequencing was used to detect Phytophthora DNA in soil samples. The distribution of Austrocedrus disease over time was assessed by satellite imagery interpretation. Twenty-three Phytophthora species, 12 of which were new records for Argentina, were detected. The most abundant species was P. austrocedri, followed by P. × cambivora, P. ramorum and P. kernoviae. The most frequent was P. × cambivora, followed by P. austrocedri and P. ramorum. Phytophthora richness and abundance, and Austrocedrus disease distribution, were influenced by land use, anthropogenic impact and soil drainage. Results showed several Phytophthoras, including well-known pathogenic species. The threat they could present to Patagonian ecosystems and their relations to human activities are discussed.     Moisture adsorption isotherms in yellow pitahaya (selenicereusmegalanthus)

    Moisture adsorption isotherms for yellow pitahaya fruits were studied at 15, 25, and 35 °C using the gravimetric method for a0.111-0.901 water activity range. Experimental values were adjusted by using the GAB, BET, Henderson, Smith, Caurie, and Peleg models.The isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst) was determined using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The results showed that yellow pitahaya fruitsexhibit type III adsorption isotherms and that the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) is temperature-dependent. For the same water activityvalue, the EMC decreased when temperature increased. The GAB model presented the best fitto the experimental values. The Qst droppedfrom 57.154 to 45.79 kJ/mol when the EMC increased from 0.05 to 0.40 g water/g dry matter, respectively. These results are important forestablishing the best storage conditions for dehydrated pitahaya fruits as well as for shelf-life prediction and the design of packaging materials
