Mixed Proper Orthogonal Decomposition with Harmonic Approximation for Parameterized Order Reduction of Electromagnetic Models

    Get PDF
This paper presents some preliminary investigations on a hybrid Model Order Reduction approach for parameter-dependent electromagnetic systems. Starting from an integral equation formulation of the field problem, we introduce a first level of compression based on the well-established Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). The result is a small-scale approximation of the full-order discrete field formulation, which retains an explicit dependence on the set of free parameters defining the geometry. The evaluation of the reduced model for arbitrary parameter configurations remains very expensive, as it requires the construction of the full system equations before its projection onto a lower-dimensional space. This problem is solved by constructing a surrogate macromodel of the parameterized reduced-order system through a multivariate Fourier approximation. Numerical results applied to a moving coil over a finite ground plane show model compression above 99% while preserving accuracy on currents and fields within 1%

Objective: To detail the nasolabial morphologic characteristics of North Sudanese subjects with Down syndrome (DS). Materials and Methods: Nasolabial morphology was assessed three-dimensionally in 64 North Sudanese subjects with DS aged 4 to 34 years and in 682 sex- and age-matched controls. Three-dimensional facial coordinates were collected using a laser scan, and selected distances, angles, areas, and volumes were computed. Subject and reference data were compared by computing z-scores and Student's t-tests. Results: The nose was significantly smaller (area) in subjects with DS than in reference subjects, and it had a different shape (more flat angle of alar slope, more acute nasal tip angle). The vertical (nasal bridge length, nose height) and anteroposterior (nasal tip protrusion) dimensions were reduced, while the horizontal dimensions (alar base width, inferior widths of the nostrils) were increased. The nasolabial angle was increased. The cutaneous lip volume was significantly smaller, while the vermilion lip area was larger in the subjects with DS. The mouth and philtrum widths were significantly reduced, while the vermilion height was significantly increased. Conclusion: Analyzed subjects with DS had a hypoplastic nose and different upper and lower lips than did reference, normal subjects. (Angle Orthod. 2011;81:107-114.

Investigating the phytotoxic potential of Carlina acaulis essential oil against the weed Bidens pilosa through a physiological and metabolomic approach

Essential oils (EOs) are widely studied as possible candidates for new eco-friendly herbicides for weed management due to their phytotoxicity. In this study we tested the phytotoxic potential of the EO obtained from the roots of Carlina acaulis L. (Apiaceae) against the weed Bidens pilosa L. This EO, containing 98% of the polyacetylene carlina oxide, showed strong phytotoxic effects on the plant metabolism, such as leaf necrosis, reduction of relative water content and total leaf area, and an increase in the dry weight/fresh weight ratio, suggesting a water status alteration. The EO also damaged the photosynthetic machinery, as evidenced by the significant reduction of the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (ΦII) and the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm). In addition, the non-photochemical quenching (ΦNPQ) significantly increased after spraying with C. acaulis EO. Damage to photosystem II was further demonstrated through the reduction of manganese and calcium concentrations, possibly due to an alteration in the correct functionality of the Mn4Ca cluster of the PSII. Metabolomics analysis revealed an accumulation of branched-chain amino acids, such as isoleucine and valine, which is commonly related to osmotic alterations under drought stress situations and a general reduction in sugar content (fructose, glucose, mannose, among others), suggesting reduction of the photosynthetic efficiency too. Overall, these findings suggest C. acaulis EO as a promising natural product with phytotoxic potential against weeds that deserves further investigation

Buckling waves in aluminum on a polyimide sea: In situ analysis towards a reliable design strategy for stretchable electronics

    Get PDF
‘Stretchable electronics’ refers to highly deformable devices in which compliant polymeric substrates support micron-size sensor units; these may provide spatially distributed measurements over complex surfaces. Stretchable sensors have opened new perspectives and applications in many fields, among which biomedicine is one of the most promising: instrumentation for tools which need to withstand significant bending or stretching during service has been demonstrated via balloon catheters and implantable patches, enabling a totally new generation of smart devices. Stretchability and bendability of such systems are achieved by selecting a compliant substrate for the sensing units and by granting sufficient deformability to the electrical interconnects. The results of this study provided an insight into the local mechanics involved in the onset of the delamination and buckling in S-shape deformable interconnects. In particular, a correlation was found between the interface failure phenomena and the geometrical parameters that define the design of deformable interconnects, allowing the identification of unexpected drawbacks related to specific S-shape design features

The SIMI (Integrated System of Indicators multicenter) Project contributes to the development of an integrated management of informative data streams related to drug addicted persons. This report analyzes the phenomenon of addiction on the territory of the Milan Province through a description of the network services that provide care and rehabilitation of those addicted. Besides the characteristics of users of local services for addictions, has been developed the analysis of the subjects reported to the prefectures for use of illegal drugs and any action taken. Standard methods of estimation were also applied to quantify the proportion of users of substances that do not relate to services and to identify certain characteristicsIl Progetto SIMI (Sistema Integrato Multicentrico di Indicatori) intende contribuire allo sviluppo di una gestione integrata e sinergica dei flussi informativi relativi ai consumatori di sostanze stupefacenti afferenti alle diverse amministrazioni dello Stato.

: After FDA and EMA approval of the regimen containing polatuzumab vedotin plus rituximab and bendamustine (PolaBR), eligible relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients in Italy were granted early access through a Named Patient Program. A multicentric observational retrospective study was conducted focusing on the effectiveness and safety of PolaBR in everyday clinical practice. Fifty-five patients were enrolled. There were 26 females (47.3%), 32 patients were primary refractory and 45 (81.8%) resulted refractory to their last therapy. The decision to add or not bendamustine was at physician's discretion. Thirty-six patients underwent PolaBR, and 19 PolaR. The 2 groups did not differ in most of baseline characteristics. The final overall response rate was 32.7% (18.2% complete response rate), with a best response rate of 49.1%. Median disease-free survival was reached at 12 months, median progression-free survival at 4.9 months and median overall survival at 9 months, respectively. Overall, 88 adverse events (AEs) were registered during treatment in 31 patients, 22 of grade ≥3. Eight cases of neuropathy occurred, all of grades 1-2 and all related to polatuzumab. The two groups of treatment did not differ for effectiveness endpoints but presented statistically significant difference in AEs occurrence, especially in hematological AEs, in AEs of grade equal or greater than 3 and in incidence of neuropathy. Our data add useful information on the effectiveness of Pola(B)R in the setting of heavily pretreated DLBCL and may also suggest a better tolerability in absence of bendamustine without compromise of efficacy

COVID-19 Severity in Multiple Sclerosis: Putting Data Into Context

    Get PDF
Background and objectives: It is unclear how multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the severity of COVID-19. The aim of this study is to compare COVID-19-related outcomes collected in an Italian cohort of patients with MS with the outcomes expected in the age- and sex-matched Italian population. Methods: Hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and death after COVID-19 diagnosis of 1,362 patients with MS were compared with the age- and sex-matched Italian population in a retrospective observational case-cohort study with population-based control. The observed vs the expected events were compared in the whole MS cohort and in different subgroups (higher risk: Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] score > 3 or at least 1 comorbidity, lower risk: EDSS score ≤ 3 and no comorbidities) by the χ2 test, and the risk excess was quantified by risk ratios (RRs). Results: The risk of severe events was about twice the risk in the age- and sex-matched Italian population: RR = 2.12 for hospitalization (p < 0.001), RR = 2.19 for ICU admission (p < 0.001), and RR = 2.43 for death (p < 0.001). The excess of risk was confined to the higher-risk group (n = 553). In lower-risk patients (n = 809), the rate of events was close to that of the Italian age- and sex-matched population (RR = 1.12 for hospitalization, RR = 1.52 for ICU admission, and RR = 1.19 for death). In the lower-risk group, an increased hospitalization risk was detected in patients on anti-CD20 (RR = 3.03, p = 0.005), whereas a decrease was detected in patients on interferon (0 observed vs 4 expected events, p = 0.04). Discussion: Overall, the MS cohort had a risk of severe events that is twice the risk than the age- and sex-matched Italian population. This excess of risk is mainly explained by the EDSS score and comorbidities, whereas a residual increase of hospitalization risk was observed in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and a decrease in people on interferon
