Surface Enhancement of Superconductivity in Tin
The possibility of surface enhancement of superconductivity is examined
experimentally. It is shown that single crystal tin samples with cold-worked
surfaces represent a superconductor with a surface-enhanced order parameter (or
negative surface extrapolation length b), whose magnitude can be controlled.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Quantum computing with antiferromagnetic spin clusters
We show that a wide range of spin clusters with antiferromagnetic
intracluster exchange interaction allows one to define a qubit. For these spin
cluster qubits, initialization, quantum gate operation, and readout are
possible using the same techniques as for single spins. Quantum gate operation
for the spin cluster qubit does not require control over the intracluster
exchange interaction. Electric and magnetic fields necessary to effect quantum
gates need only be controlled on the length scale of the spin cluster rather
than the scale for a single spin. Here, we calculate the energy gap separating
the logical qubit states from the next excited state and the matrix elements
which determine quantum gate operation times. We discuss spin cluster qubits
formed by one- and two-dimensional arrays of s=1/2 spins as well as clusters
formed by spins s>1/2. We illustrate the advantages of spin cluster qubits for
various suggested implementations of spin qubits and analyze the scaling of

Mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in magnetic multilayers
We discuss a mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in
ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet multilayers. We show that in the case when
the metal's thickness is larger than the electron mean free path, the relative
orientation of magnetizations in the ferromagnets is perpendicular. The
exchange energy between ferromagnets decays with the metal thickness as a power
law
Expansions of algebras and superalgebras and some applications
After reviewing the three well-known methods to obtain Lie algebras and
superalgebras from given ones, namely, contractions, deformations and
extensions, we describe a fourth method recently introduced, the expansion of
Lie (super)algebras. Expanded (super)algebras have, in general, larger
dimensions than the original algebra, but also include the Inonu-Wigner and
generalized IW contractions as a particular case. As an example of a physical
application of expansions, we discuss the relation between the possible
underlying gauge symmetry of eleven-dimensional supergravity and the

Crossed Andreev reflection at ferromagnetic domain walls
We investigate several factors controlling the physics of hybrid structures
involving ferromagnetic domain walls (DWs) and superconducting (S) metals. We
discuss the role of non collinear magnetizations in S/DW junctions in a spin
Nambu Keldysh formalism. We discuss transport in S/DW/N and
S/DW/S junctions in the presence of inelastic scattering in the domain wall. In
this case transport properties are similar for the S/DW/S and S/DW/N junctions
and are controlled by sequential tunneling of spatially separated Cooper pairs
across the domain wall. In the absence of inelastic scattering we find that a
Josephson current circulates only if the size of the ferromagnetic region is
smaller than the elastic mean free path meaning that the Josephson effect
associated to crossed Andreev reflection cannot be observed under usual
experimental conditions. Nevertheless a finite dc current can circulate across
the S/DW/S junction due to crossed Andreev reflection associated to sequential

The alpha 7 nicotinic receptor agonist PHA-543613 hydrochloride inhibits <i>Porphyromonas gingivalis</i>-induced expression of interleukin-8 by oral keratinocytes
Objective:
The alpha 7 nicotinic receptor (α7nAChR) is expressed by oral keratinocytes. α7nAChR activation mediates anti-inflammatory responses. The objective of this study was to determine if α7nAChR activation inhibited pathogen-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) expression by oral keratinocytes.<p></p>
Materials and methods:
Periodontal tissue expression of α7nAChR was determined by real-time PCR. OKF6/TERT-2 oral keratinocytes were exposed to <i>Porphyromonas gingivalis</i> in the presence and absence of a α7nAChR agonist (PHA-543613 hydrochloride) alone or after pre-exposure to a specific α7nAChR antagonist (α-bungarotoxin). Interleukin-8 (IL-8) expression was measured by ELISA and real-time PCR. Phosphorylation of the NF-κB p65 subunit was determined using an NF-κB p65 profiler assay and STAT-3 activation by STAT-3 in-cell ELISA. The release of ACh from oral keratinocytes in response to <i>P. gingivalis</i> lipopolysaccharide was determined using a GeneBLAzer M3 CHO-K1-blacell reporter assay.<p></p>
Results:
Expression of α7nAChR mRNA was elevated in diseased periodontal tissue. PHA-543613 hydrochloride inhibited <i>P. Gingivalis</i>-induced expression of IL-8 at the transcriptional level. This effect was abolished when cells were pre-exposed to a specific α7nAChR antagonist, α-bungarotoxin. PHA-543613 hydrochloride downregulated NF-κB signalling through reduced phosphorylation of the NF-κB p65-subunit. In addition, PHA-543613 hydrochloride promoted STAT-3 signalling by maintenance of phosphorylation. Furthermore, oral keratinocytes upregulated ACh release in response to <i>P. Gingivalis</i> lipopolysaccharide.<p></p>
Conclusion:
These data suggest that α7nAChR plays a role in regulating the innate immune responses of oral keratinocytes.<p></p>
Spin-accumulation and Andreev-reflection in a mesoscopic ferromagnetic wire
The electron transport though ferromagnetic metal-superconducting hybrid
devices is considered in the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism in the
quasiclassical approximation. Attention if focused on the limit in which the
exchange splitting in the ferromagnet is much larger than the superconducting
energy gap. Transport properties are then governed by an interplay between
spin-accumulation close to the interface and Andreev reflection at the
interface. We find that the resistance can either be enhanced or lowered in
comparison to the normal case and can have a non-monotonic temperature and
voltage dependence. In the non-linear voltage regime electron heating effects
may govern the transport properties, leading to qualitative different behaviour
than in the absence of heating effects. Recent experimental results on the
effect of the superconductor on the conductance of the ferromagnet can be
understood by our results for the energy-dependent interface resistance
together with effects of spin- accumulation without invoking long range pairing

Using self-definition to predict the influence of procedural justice on organizational, interpersonal, and job/task-oriented citizenship behaviors
An integrative self-definition model is proposed to improve our understanding of how procedural justice affects different outcome modalities in organizational behavior. Specifically, it is examined whether the strength of different levels of self-definition (collective, relational, and individual) each uniquely interact with procedural justice to predict organizational, interpersonal, and job/task-oriented citizenship behaviors, respectively. Results from experimental and (both single and multisource) field data consistently revealed stronger procedural justice effects (1) on organizational-oriented citizenship behavior among those who define themselves strongly in terms of organizational characteristics, (2) on interpersonal-oriented citizenship behavior among those who define themselves strongly in terms of their interpersonal relationships, and (3) on job/task-oriented citizenship behavior among those who define themselves weakly in terms of their distinctiveness or uniqueness. We discuss the relevance of these results with respect to how employees can be motivated most effectively in organizational settings
Scaling of the distribution of fluctuations of financial market indices
We study the distribution of fluctuations over a time scale (i.e.,
the returns) of the S&P 500 index by analyzing three distinct databases.
Database (i) contains approximately 1 million records sampled at 1 min
intervals for the 13-year period 1984-1996, database (ii) contains 8686 daily
records for the 35-year period 1962-1996, and database (iii) contains 852
monthly records for the 71-year period 1926-1996. We compute the probability
distributions of returns over a time scale , where varies
approximately over a factor of 10^4 - from 1 min up to more than 1 month. We
find that the distributions for 4 days (1560 mins) are
consistent with a power-law asymptotic behavior, characterized by an exponent
, well outside the stable L\'evy regime . To
test the robustness of the S&P result, we perform a parallel analysis on two
other financial market indices. Database (iv) contains 3560 daily records of
the NIKKEI index for the 14-year period 1984-97, and database (v) contains 4649
daily records of the Hang-Seng index for the 18-year period 1980-97. We find
estimates of consistent with those describing the distribution of S&P
500 daily-returns. One possible reason for the scaling of these distributions
is the long persistence of the autocorrelation function of the volatility. For
time scales longer than days, our results are
