Breast Milk Cytokines and Early Growth in Gambian Infants
Background: Breast milk provides nutrition for infants but also delivers other bioactive factors that have key protective and developmental benefits. In particular, cytokines are thought to play a role in immunomodulation, although little is known about their impact on health outcomes in early life. Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the relationship between cytokines in breast milk and infant growth outcomes in a low-income setting. Methods: 100 mother-infant pairs were followed up to 2â3 months postpartum as part of a prospective longitudinal cohort study in urban Gambia, West Africa. The concentrations of 9 pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ÎČ, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IFN-Îł, TNFα), IGF-1 and TGFÎČ2 were measured in colostrum within 12 h of birth and in breast milk at the final visit, scheduled between day 60 and 89 postpartum. Infant weight was recorded and converted to weight-for-age Z-scores (WAZ) at the same time points. Growth outcomes were defined in our study as (a) change in WAZ between birth and final visit (b) WAZ at final visit. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the ability of colostrum and breast milk cytokine concentrations to predict growth outcomes up to 2â3 months postpartum. Results: Gambian infants demonstrated growth faltering across the first 2â3 months postpartum. There was no significant relationship between cytokines in colostrum and subsequent change in WAZ between birth and the final visit, in either unadjusted or adjusted models. However, cytokines in mature breast milk, TNFα, IFNÎł, IL1ÎČ, IL2, IL4, and IL6, were weak negative predictors of WAZ scores at the final visit, in unadjusted models (p < 0.05). When adjusted for maternal anemia (as a proxy for maternal nutrition), TNFα and IL6 remained significant predictors (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Variations in breast milk cytokine levels do not play a substantial role in the growth faltering observed across early infancy. The potential contribution of other factors, such as micronutrients, hormones or human milk oligosaccharides, must be elucidated. Cytokine levels in mature breast milk were weakly predictive of poor infant growth, possibly reflecting a âread-outâ of suboptimal maternal health and nutrition
HD molecules at high redshift: The absorption system at z=2.3377 towards Q 1232+082
We present a detailed analysis of the H_2 and HD absorption lines detected in
the Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system at z_abs=2.3377 towards the quasar
Q1232+082. We show that this intervening cloud has a covering factor smaller
than unity and covers only part of the QSO broad emission line region. The zero
flux level has to be corrected at the position of the saturated H_2 and
optically thin HD lines by about 10%. We accurately determine the Doppler
parameter for HD and CI lines (b = 1.86+/-0.20 km/s). We find a ratio
N(HD)/N(H_2)=(7.1 +3.7 -2.2)x10^-5 that is significantly higher than what is
observed in molecular clouds of the Galaxy. Chemical models suggest that in the
physical conditions prevailing in the central part of molecular clouds,
deuterium and hydrogen are mostly in their molecular forms. Assuming this is
true, we derive D/H = (3.6 +1.9 -1.1)x10^-5. This implies that the
corresponding baryon density of the Universe is \Omega_b h^2 = (0.0182 +0.0047
-0.0042). This value coincides within 1\sigma with that derived from
observations of the CMBR as well as from observations of the D/H atomic ratio
in low-metallicity QSO absorption line systems. The observation of HD at high
redshift is therefore a promising independent method to constrain \Omega_b.
This observation indicates as well a low astration factor of deuterium. This
can be interpreted as the consequence of an intense infall of primordial gas

Sera from people with HIV and depression induce commensurate metabolic alterations in astrocytes: toward precision diagnoses and therapies.
OBJECTIVES: People with HIV (PWH) have high rates of depression and neurocognitive impairment (NCI) despite viral suppression on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Mounting evidence suggests that immunometabolic disruptions may contribute to these conditions in some PWH. We hypothesized that metabolic dysfunction in astrocytes is associated with depressive symptoms and cognitive function in PWH. METHODS: Human astrocytes were exposed to sera from PWH (n=40) with varying degrees of depressive symptomatology and cognitive function. MitoTrackerTM Deep Red FM (MT) was used to visualize mitochondrial activity and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) as an indicator of astrocyte reactivity using the high-throughput fluorescent microscopy and image analyses platform, CellInsight CX5 (CX5). The Seahorse platform was used to assess glycolytic and mitochondrial metabolism. RESULTS: More severe depression, as indexed by higher Becks Depression Inventory (BDI-II) scores, was associated with lower MT signal measures. Better cognitive function, as assessed by neuropsychiatric testing t-scores, was associated with increased MT signal measures. GFAP intensity negatively correlated with several cognitive t-scores. Age positively correlated with (higher) MT signal measures and GFAP intensity. Worse depressive symptoms (higher BDI-II scores) were associated with decreased oxygen consumption rate and spare respiratory capacity, concomitant with increased extracellular acidification rate in astrocytes. CONCLUSIONS: These findings show that factors in the sera of PWH alter mitochondrial activity in cultured human astrocytes, suggesting that mechanisms that alter mitochondrial and astrocyte homeostasis can be detected peripherally. Thus, in vitro cultures may provide a model to identify neuropathogenic mechanisms of depression or neurocognitive impairment in PWH and test personalized therapeutics for neurologic and psychiatric disorders
HD/H2 Molecular Clouds in the Early Universe: The Problem of Primordial Deuterium
We have detected new HD absorption systems at high redshifts, z_abs=2.626 and
z_abs=1.777, identified in the spectra of the quasars J0812+3208 and Q1331+170,
respectively. Each of these systems consists of two subsystems. The HD column
densities have been determined: log(N(HD),A)=15.70+/-0.07 for z_A=2.626443(2)
and log(N(HD),B)=12.98+/-0.22 for z_B=2.626276(2) in the spectrum of J0812+3208
and log(N(HD),C)=14.83+/-0.15 for z_C=1.77637(2) and log(N(HD),D)=14.61+/-0.20
for z_D=1.77670(3) in the spectrum of Q1331+170. The measured HD/H2 ratio for
three of these subsystems has been found to be considerably higher than its
values typical of clouds in our Galaxy. We discuss the problem of determining
the primordial deuterium abundance, which is most sensitive to the baryon
density of the Universe \Omega_{b}. Using a well-known model for the chemistry
of a molecular cloud, we have estimated the isotopic ratio
D/H=HD/2H_2=(2.97+/-0.55)x10^{-5} and the corresponding baryon density
\Omega_{b}h^2=0.0205^{+0.0025}_{-0.0020}. This value is in good agreement with
\Omega_{b}h^2=0.0226^{+0.0006}_{-0.0006} obtained by analyzing the cosmic
microwave background radiation anisotropy. However, in high-redshift clouds,
under conditions of low metallicity and low dust content, hydrogen may be
incompletely molecularized even in the case of self-shielding. In this
situation, the HD/2H_2 ratio may not correspond to the actual D/H isotopic
ratio. We have estimated the cloud molecularization dynamics and the influence
of cosmological evolutionary effects on it

Intrinsic attention to pain is associated with a pronociceptive phenotype
Evidence suggests that attention to pain is a product of both incoming sensory signals and cognitive evaluation of a stimulus. Intrinsic attention to pain (IAP) is a measure that captures an individual's natural tendency to attend to a painful stimulus and may be important in understanding why pain disrupts cognitive functioning in some individuals more than others. In this study, we explored the extent to which IAP was associated with the modulation of incoming sensory signals characteristic of a pronociceptive phenotype: temporal summation (TS) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM). 44 healthy participants (23 female; M =23.57, S.D.=5.50) were assessed on IAP, TS and CPM. We found that IAP was positively correlated with TS and CPM. A regression model showed that TS and CPM explained 39% of the variance in IAP scores. Both mechanisms seem to contribute independently to the propensity to attend to pain. These findings highlight that modulatory mechanisms at the spinal/supraspinal level exert a strong influence on an individual's ability to disengage from pain. Aircraft Noise and Quality of Life around Frankfurt Airport
In a survey of 2,312 residents living near Frankfurt Airport aircraft noise annoyance and disturbances as well as environmental (EQoL) and health-related quality of life (HQoL) were assessed and compared with data on exposure due to aircraft, road traffic, and railway noise. Results indicate higher noise annoyance than predicted from general exposure-response curves. Beside aircraft sound levels source-related attitudes were associated with reactions to aircraft noise. Furthermore, aircraft noise affected EQoL in general, although to a much smaller extent. HQoL was associated with aircraft noise annoyance, noise sensitivity and partly with aircraft noise exposure, in particular in the subgroup of multimorbid residents. The results suggest a recursive relationship between noise and health, yet this cannot be tested in cross-sectional studies. Longitudinal studies would be recommendable to get more insight in the causal paths underlying the noise-health relationship
Direct Measurement of Nuclear Dependence of Charged Current Quasielastic-like Neutrino Interactions using MINERvA
Charged-current interactions on carbon, iron, and lead with a
final state hadronic system of one or more protons with zero mesons are used to
investigate the influence of the nuclear environment on quasielastic-like
interactions. The transfered four-momentum squared to the target nucleus,
, is reconstructed based on the kinematics of the leading proton, and
differential cross sections versus and the cross-section ratios of iron,
lead and carbon to scintillator are measured for the first time in a single
experiment. The measurements show a dependence on atomic number. While the
quasielastic-like scattering on carbon is compatible with predictions, the
trends exhibited by scattering on iron and lead favor a prediction with
intranuclear rescattering of hadrons accounted for by a conventional particle
cascade treatment. These measurements help discriminate between different
models of both initial state nucleons and final state interactions used in the
neutrino oscillation experiments
