    Curricular Differentiation and Stratification in Australia

    This paper examines curricular differentiation and stratification in the Australian education system. Our aim is to contribute to the development of a comparative framework about curricular differentiation and stratification in national systems of education. Using a typology from LeTender, Hofer and Shimizu (2003), we show how and where curricular differentiation and stratification occur in Australia. We draw on secondary sources and our insider, lived knowledge to show how and where curricular differentiation and stratification occur as well as the structural features of Australian schooling that mediate them. Curricular differentiation and stratification are not widely researched in the Australian context, suggesting that these processes are naturalised. As such, this paper presents preliminary insights that can serve as a foundation for future research

    Puberty disorders among ART-conceived singletons: a Nordic register study from the CoNARTaS group

    STUDY QUESTIONDo ART-conceived children have an increased risk for puberty disorders?SUMMARY ANSWERBoth ART-conceived boys and girls had a higher risk of puberty disorders; early puberty was more common among girls and late puberty among boys.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADYSome physiological differences in growth and metabolism have been reported for ART-conceived children compared to non-ART-conceived children. Knowledge on pubertal development and disorders in ART-conceived children is limited.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATIONA register-based cohort study was carried out including data from 1985 to 2015. The Committee of Nordic Assisted Reproductive Technology and Safety (CoNARTaS) study population consists of all live and stillborn children, as well as their mothers, registered in the Medical Birth Registers during the study period in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway.PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODSA total of 122 321 ART-conceived singletons and 6 576 410 non-ART singletons born in Denmark (1994–2014), Finland (1990–2014), Norway (2002–2015) and Sweden (1985–2015) were included. Puberty disorders were defined using International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)-9/ICD-10 codes and classified in the following groups: late puberty (6268/E30.0), early puberty (2591 and 2958/E30.1 and E30.8) and unspecified disorders (V212 and V579/E30.9 and Z00.3 as well as Z51.80 for Finland). The results in Cox regression were adjusted for maternal age, parity, smoking, gestational diabetes, chronic hypertension, hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and country, and further for either gestational age, birthweight, small for gestational age or large for gestational age.MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCEThere were 37 869 children with diagnoses related to puberty disorders, and 603 of them were born after ART. ART-conceived children had higher risks for early (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.45, 95% CI: 1.29–1.64) and late puberty (aHR 1.47, 95% CI: 1.21–1.77). Girls had more diagnoses related to early puberty (aHR 1.46, 95% CI: 1.29–1.66) and boys with late puberty (aHR 1.55, 95% CI: 1.24–1.95).LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTIONUsing reported puberty disorders with ICD codes in health care registers might vary, which may affect the numbers of cases found in the registers. Register data may give an underestimation both among ART and non-ART-conceived children, especially among non-ART children, who may not be as carefully followed as ART-conceived children. Adjustment for causes and duration of infertility, mothers’ own puberty characteristics and BMI, as well as children’s BMI, was not possible because data were not available or data were missing for the early years. It was also not possible to compare ART to non-ART siblings or to study the pubertal disorders by cause of subfertility owing to a small number of discordant sibling pairs and a large proportion of missing data on cause of subfertility.WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGSThis large, register-based study suggests that ART-conceived children have a higher risk for puberty disorders. However, the mechanisms of infertility and pubertal onset are complex, and ART is a rapidly advancing field with various treatment options.     The pedunculopontine nucleus is related to visual hallucinations in Parkinson’s disease: preliminary results of a voxel-based morphometry study

    Visual hallucinations (VH) are common in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and lead to a poor quality of life. For a long time, dopaminergic therapy was considered to be the most important risk factor for the development of VH in PD. Recently, the cholinergic system, including the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), has been implicated in the pathophysiology of VH. The aim of the present study was to investigate grey matter density of the PPN region and one of its projection areas, the thalamus. Thirteen non-demented PD patients with VH were compared to 16 non-demented PD patients without VH, 13 demented PD patients (PDD) with VH and 11 patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Isotropic 3-D T1-weighted MRI images (3T) were analysed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) with the PPN region and thalamus as ROIs. PD and PDD patients with VH showed grey matter reductions of the PPN region and the thalamus compared to PD patients without VH. VH in PD(D) patients are associated with atrophy of the PPN region and its thalamic target area, suggesting that a cholinergic deficit may be involved in the development of VH in PD(D)

    Surveillance of trend and distribution of stroke mortality by subtype, age, gender, and geographic areas in Tianjin, China, 1999–2006

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the epidemiological trend and distribution of stroke mortality in the city of Tianjin, China, in order to provide evidence for the prevention and control of stroke. Methods The study was based on 102 718 cases of stroke mortality in Tianjin between 1999 and 2006. The cause of death was coded according to the International Classification of Diseases into stroke subtypes. Standardized mortality rates were calculated for stroke and its subtypes, adjusted for age and gender using the year 2000 world standard population. The age, gender, and geographic distribution of stroke and subtype mortality were analyzed. Χ 2 -tests were used to determine the statistical significance of differences in mortality trends. Results The stroke mortality rate in Tianjin declined from 133·52/100 000/year in 1999 to 102·52/100 000/year in 2006. The stroke mortality rate for males was higher than that for females. Stroke mortality rates increased with increasing age. The subtypes of stroke have changed considerably in Tianjin. Hemorrhagic was major in 1999–2001, while cerebral infarction attained the first rank and accounted for more than 50% of stroke mortality in 2002–2006. The most pronounced finding was that the proportion of ischemic stroke was 66·65% in the urban population and over 20% higher than that in the rural area. Stroke in the suburban area was mainly hemorrhagic stroke, up to 62·67%. Conclusions There are significant differences in the distribution of stroke mortality by subtype, age, gender, and geographic areas in Tianjin, China. Various subtypes of stroke are associated with different risk factors and therefore require different public health prevention and control measures.     Potential application of mesh-free SPH method in turbulent river flows

    A comprehensive review has been completed on the simulation of turbulent flow over rough beds using mesh-free particle models. Based on the outcomes of this review, an improved Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method has been developed for open channel flows over a rough bed, in which a mixing length model is used for modeling the 2D turbulence and a drag force equation is proposed for treating the boundary shear. The proposed model was applied to simulate a depth-limited open channel flow over a rough bed surface. The results of the velocity profile and shear stress distribution show a good agreement with the experimental data and existing analytical solutions. This work reveals that in order to correctly model turbulent open channel flow over a rough bed, the treatment of both flow turbulence and bed roughness effect is equally important

    Into Thick(er) Air? Oxygen Availability at Humans’ Physiological Frontier on Mount Everest

    Global audiences are captivated by climbers pushing themselves to the limits in the hypoxic environment of Mount Everest. However, air pressure sets oxygen abundance, meaning it varies with the weather and climate warming. This presents safety issues for mountaineers, but also an opportunity for public engagement around climate change. Here we blend new observations from Everest with ERA5 reanalysis (1979- 2019) and climate model results to address both perspectives. We find that plausible warming could generate subtle but physiologically relevant changes in summit oxygen availability, including an almost 5% increase in annual minimum VO 2 max for 2°C warming since pre-industrial. In the current climate we find evidence of swings in pressure sufficient to change Everest’s apparent elevation by almost 750 m. Winter pressures can also plunge lower than previously reported, highlighting the importance of air pressure forecasts for the safety of those trying to push the physiological frontier on Mt. Everest

    Using Simulations as a Starting Point for Constructing Meaningful Learning Games

    For many school administrators and decision makers, the term “video games” holds numerous cultural associations which make their adoption in the education space challenging. Additionally, the term is so broad that it can sometimes be difficult to communicate explicitly a desire to build learning experiences that go beyond the Drill and Kill edutainment titles that currently dominate most people’s perceptions of educational games. By contrast, the term “simulations” is often well respected among educators, particularly in the natural sciences. With “simulation” already being a full genre of video games, it would seem natural that researchers are beginning to explore the overlaps between simulation games and pedagogical goals that go beyond those found in Drill and Kill games. In this chapter, we survey some of the relevant research concerning both simulations and video games and outline practical pathways through which we can leverage the interest and frameworks designed for simulation construction to facilitate the introduction of video game concepts and experiences into the classroom environment. In particular, we report on the use of Starlogo TNG, a graphical programming environment in which kids themselves can create simulation-based video games, for deepening children’s understanding of scientific concepts

    Association of a germline copy number polymorphism of APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B with burden of putative APOBEC-dependent mutations in breast cancer.

    The somatic mutations in a cancer genome are the aggregate outcome of one or more mutational processes operative through the lifetime of the individual with cancer. Each mutational process leaves a characteristic mutational signature determined by the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair that constitute it. A role was recently proposed for the APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases in generating particular genome-wide mutational signatures and a signature of localized hypermutation called kataegis. A germline copy number polymorphism involving APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B, which effectively deletes APOBEC3B, has been associated with modestly increased risk of breast cancer. Here we show that breast cancers in carriers of the deletion show more mutations of the putative APOBEC-dependent genome-wide signatures than cancers in non-carriers. The results suggest that the APOBEC3A-APOBEC3B germline deletion allele confers cancer susceptibility through increased activity of APOBEC-dependent mutational processes, although the mechanism by which this increase in activity occurs remains unknown.We would like to thank the Wellcome Trust for support (grant reference 098051).
