Quantum Structure in Cognition: Why and How Concepts are Entangled
One of us has recently elaborated a theory for modelling concepts that uses
the state context property (SCoP) formalism, i.e. a generalization of the
quantum formalism. This formalism incorporates context into the mathematical
structure used to represent a concept, and thereby models how context
influences the typicality of a single exemplar and the applicability of a
single property of a concept, which provides a solution of the 'Pet-Fish
problem' and other difficulties occurring in concept theory. Then, a quantum
model has been worked out which reproduces the membership weights of several
exemplars of concepts and their combinations. We show in this paper that a
further relevant effect appears in a natural way whenever two or more concepts
combine, namely, 'entanglement'. The presence of entanglement is explicitly
revealed by considering a specific example with two concepts, constructing some
Bell's inequalities for this example, testing them in a real experiment with
test subjects, and finally proving that Bell's inequalities are violated in
this case. We show that the intrinsic and unavoidable character of entanglement
can be explained in terms of the weights of the exemplars of the combined
concept with respect to the weights of the exemplars of the component concepts.Comment: 10 page
A switchable controlled-NOT gate in a spin-chain NMR quantum computer
A method of switching a controlled-NOT gate in a solid-stae NMR quantum
computer is presented. Qubits of I=1/2 nuclear spins are placed periodically
along a quantum spin chain (1-D antiferromagnet) having a singlet ground state
with a finite spin gap to the lowest excited state caused by some quantum
effect. Irradiation of a microwave tuned to the spin gap energy excites a
packet of triplet magnons at a specific part of the chain where control and
target qubits are involved. The packet switches on the Suhl-Nakamura
interaction between the qubits, which serves as a controlled NOT gate. The
qubit initialization is achieved by a qubit initializer consisting of
semiconducting sheets attached to the spin chain, where spin polarizations
created by the optical pumping method in the semiconductors are transferred to
the spin chain. The scheme allows us to separate the initialization process
from the computation, so that one can optimize the computation part without
being restricted by the initialization scheme, which provides us with a wide
selection of materials for a quantum computer.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Discovery of widespread transcription initiation at microsatellites predictable by sequence-based deep neural network
Using the Cap Analysis of Gene Expression (CAGE) technology, the FANTOM5 consortium provided one of the most comprehensive maps of transcription start sites (TSSs) in several species. Strikingly, ~72% of them could not be assigned to a specific gene and initiate at unconventional regions, outside promoters or enhancers. Here, we probe these unassigned TSSs and show that, in all species studied, a significant fraction of CAGE peaks initiate at microsatellites, also called short tandem repeats (STRs). To confirm this transcription, we develop Cap Trap RNA-seq, a technology which combines cap trapping and long read MinION sequencing. We train sequence-based deep learning models able to predict CAGE signal at STRs with high accuracy. These models unveil the importance of STR surrounding sequences not only to distinguish STR classes, but also to predict the level of transcription initiation. Importantly, genetic variants linked to human diseases are preferentially found at STRs with high transcription initiation level, supporting the biological and clinical relevance of transcription initiation at STRs. Together, our results extend the repertoire of non-coding transcription associated with DNA tandem repeats and complexify STR polymorphism
Interleukin-6 polymorphisms modify the risk of periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Objective: To clarify the association of IL-6 polymorphisms and periodontitis, a meta-analysis of case-control studies and a systemic review were conducted. Material and methods: We performed a literature search using PubMed and Medline database to May 2009, with no restrictions. We also reviewed references from all retrieved articles. Six case-control studies involving 1 093 periodontitis cases and 574 controls were selected for meta-analysis to assess the purported associations between IL-6 polymorphisms and the risk of periodontitis. IL-6 −174 G/C and −572 C/G polymorphisms were included in the present meta-analysis, and the association between IL-6 −6331 T/C polymorphism and the risk of periodontitis was adequately reviewed as well. Results and conclusion: The present meta-analysis indicates that the IL-6 −174 G allele could not modify the risk of chronic periodontitis, but increased the risk of aggressive periodontitis. And −572 C/G polymorphism is associated with the pathogenesis of periodontitis, including chronic periodontitis or aggressive periodontitis
