    Assessment, evaluation and quality assurance: implications for integrity in reporting academic achievement in higher education

    The terms assessment, evaluation and quality assurance have various interpretations in higher education. The first two, assessment and evaluation, share considerable conceptual ground and interconnected histories. Quality assurance, on the other hand, is a more recent development. The issue of academic achievement standards in particular has significant implications for quality assurance. The first half of this article provides a selective broad-brush outline of the topics just described. The second half is about an emerging concept, grade integrity, which is focused on the trustworthiness of course grades recorded on student academic transcripts. This focus serves as a platform to illustrate: how difficult issues can be analysed; why established conventions and assumptions need to be challenged; and how ways forward can be sought out and thought through. The context for the paper is higher education but the principles also apply to other educational sectors

    Assessing contextual descriptive features for plot-based classification of urban areas

    A methodology for mapping urban land-use types integrating information from multiple data sources (high spatial resolution imagery, LiDAR data, and cadastral plots) is presented. A large set of complementary descriptive features that allow distinguishing different urban structures (historical, urban, residential, and industrial) is extracted and, after a selection process, a plot-based image classification approach applied, facilitating to directly relate the classification results and the urban descriptive parameters computed to the existent land-use/land-cover units in geospatial databases. The descriptive features are extracted by considering different hierarchical scale levels with semantic meaning in urban environments: buildings, plots, and urban blocks. Plots are characterised by means of image-based (spectral and textural), three-dimensional, and geometrical features. In addition, two groups of contextual features are defined: internal and external. Internal contextual features describe the main land cover types inside the plot (buildings and vegetation). External contextual features describe each object in terms of the properties of the urban block to which it belongs. After the evaluation in an heterogeneous Mediterranean urban area, the land-use classification accuracy values obtained show that the complementary descriptive features proposed improve the characterisation of urban typologies.     Using intuitive awakening for business students to enhance strategic thinking skills

    Intuition is essential to marketing scholarship and practice. Furthermore, under certain business conditions, it becomes invaluable as a primary mode of decision making. Reflecting this perspective, conceptual research on the topic is abundant. Empirical studies in business school settings that address marketing intuitive decision making are scarce. Without application of intuitive thinking at the marketing education class level, diffusion of this important skill in the educational sphere will not take place. In this research, while building on Andrew Cox’s (2001) conceptualization a power matrix framework between buyers and suppliers as a case theme, we test role-playing and experiential knowledge effects on graduate business students’ assessments of marketing communications, relationships, satisfaction and influence strategy dimensions involving intuitive decision making

    Hands-Free Image Capture, Data Tagging and Transfer Using Google Glass: A Pilot Study for Improved Wound Care Management

    Chronic wounds, including pressure ulcers, compromise the health of 6.5 million Americans and pose an annual estimated burden of $25 billion to the U.S. health care system. When treating chronic wounds, clinicians must use meticulous documentation to determine wound severity and to monitor healing progress over time. Yet, current wound documentation practices using digital photography are often cumbersome and labor intensive. The process of transferring photos into Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) requires many steps and can take several days. Newer smartphone and tablet-based solutions, such as Epic Haiku, have reduced EMR upload time. However, issues still exist involving patient positioning, image-capture technique, and patient identification. In this paper, we present the development and assessment of the SnapCap System for chronic wound photography. Through leveraging the sensor capabilities of Google Glass, SnapCap enables hands-free digital image capture, and the tagging and transfer of images to a patient’s EMR. In a pilot study with wound care nurses at Stanford Hospital (n=16), we (i) examined feature preferences for hands-free digital image capture and documentation, and (ii) compared SnapCap to the state of the art in digital wound care photography, the Epic Haiku application. We used the Wilcoxon Signed-ranks test to evaluate differences in mean ranks between preference options. Preferred hands-free navigation features include barcode scanning for patient identification, Z(15) = -3.873, p < 0.001, r = 0.71, and double-blinking to take photographs, Z(13) = -3.606, p < 0.001, r = 0.71. In the comparison between SnapCap and Epic Haiku, the SnapCap System was preferred for sterile image-capture technique, Z(16) = -3.873, p < 0.001, r = 0.68. Responses were divided with respect to image quality and overall ease of use.
