    The Energy-dependent X-ray Timing Characteristics of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Mkn 766

    We present the energy-dependent power spectral density (PSD) and cross-spectral properties of Mkn 766, obtained from combining data obtained during an XMM-Newton observation spanning six revolutions in 2005 with data obtained from an XMM-Newton long-look in 2001. The PSD shapes and rms-flux relations are found to be consistent between the 2001 and 2005 observations, suggesting the 2005 observation is simply a low-flux extension of the 2001 observation and permitting us to combine the two data sets. The resulting PSD has the highest temporal frequency resolution for any AGN PSD measured to date. Applying a broken power-law model yields break frequencies which increase in temporal frequency with photon energy. Obtaining a good fit when assuming energy-independent break frequencies requires the presence of a Lorentzian at 4.6+/-0.4 * 10^-4 Hz whose strength increases with photon energy, a behavior seen in black hole X-ray binaries. The cross-spectral properties are measured; temporal frequency-dependent soft-to-hard time lags are detected in this object for the first time. Cross-spectral results are consistent with those for other accreting black hole systems. The results are discussed in the context of several variability models, including those based on inwardly-propagating viscosity variations in the accretion disk.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 18 pages, 9 figures.     Do the visual conditions at the point of escape affect European sea bass escape behavior?

    European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), an important species for the Mediterranean aquaculture industry, has been reported to escape from sea cage installations. Fish escapes are caused mainly by operational and technical failures that eventually result into a creation of a tear. Escapees may interact with wild stocks through interbreeding, transfer of pathogens and competition for food. The aim of this study was to examine at which extent the presence of a visible obstacle close to a tear on the net have an influence on sea bass propensity to escape. Fish were initially confined into small sea cages, with a tear at one side. The escape behavior was tested under experimental conditions. It is clearly demonstrated that sea bass was able to locate a tear on the net pen, immediately after its appearance. Crossings occurred in all cages, in singles or in a series of up to seven individuals. The presence of an obstacle close to the net tear altered the escape behavior of D. labrax resulting in a delay that eventually reduced the escape rate. Concluding, it is highly recommended that sea bass cages should be kept internally the culture array. Furthermore, the placement of artificial obstacles close to the sea cages could be an efficient practice that mitigates the escape risk after severe environmental conditions

    X-ray power law spectra in active galactic nuclei

    X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are usually described as power law spectra, characterized by the spectral slope α\alpha or photon index Γ\Gamma. Here we discuss the X-ray spectral properties within the framework of clumpy accretion flows, and estimate the power law slope as a function of the source parameters. We expect harder spectra in massive objects than in less massive sources, and steeper spectra in higher accretion rate systems. The predicted values of the photon index cover the range of spectral slopes typically observed in Seyfert galaxies and quasars. The overall trends are consistent with observations, and may account for the positive correlation of the photon index with Eddington ratio (and the possible anticorrelation with black hole mass) observed in different AGN samples. Spectral properties are also closely related to variability properties. We obtain that shorter characteristic time scales are associated with steeper spectra.     A Cutoff in the X-ray Fluctuation Power Density Spectrum of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 3516

    During 1997 March-July, XTE observed the bright, strongly variable Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 once every ~12.8 hr for 4.5 months and nearly continuously (with interruptions due to SAA passage but not Earth occultation) for a 4.2 day period in the middle. These were followed by ongoing monitoring once every ~4.3 days. These data are used to construct the first well-determined X-ray fluctuation power density spectrum (PDS) of an active galaxy to span more than 4 decades of usable temporal frequency. The PDS shows no signs of any strict or quasi-periodicity, but does show a progressive flattening of the power-law slope from -1.74 at short time scales to -0.73 at longer time scales. This is the clearest observation to date of the long-predicted cutoff in the PDS. The characteristic variability time scale corresponding to this cutoff temporal frequency is 1 month. Although it is unclear how this time scale may be interpreted in terms of a physical size or process, there are several promising candidate models. The PDS appears similar to those seen for Galactic black hole candidates such as Cyg X-1, suggesting that these two classes of objects with very different luminosities and putative black hole masses (differing by more than a factor of 10^5) may have similar X-ray generation processes and structures.Comment: 21 pages, incl. 5 figures, AASTe

    GOES-R Algorithms: A Common Science and Engineering Design and Development Approach for Delivering Next Generation Environmental Data Products

    GOES-R, the next generation of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) System, represents a new technological era in operational geostationary environmental satellite systems. GOES-R will provide advanced products that describe the state of the atmosphere, land, oceans, and solar/ space environments over the western hemisphere. The Harris GOES-R Ground Segment team will provide the software, based on government-supplied algorithms, and engineering infrastructures designed to produce and distribute these next-generation data products. The Harris GOES-R Team has adopted an integrated applied science and engineering approach that combines rigorous system engineering methods, with modern software design elements to facilitate the transition of algorithms for Level 1 and 2+ products to operational software. The Harris Team GOES-R GS algorithm framework, which includes a common data model interface, provides general design principles and standardized methods for developing general algorithm services, interfacing to external data, generating intermediate and L1b and L2 products and implementing common algorithm features such as metadata generation and error handling. This work presents the suite of GOES-R products, their properties and the process by which the related requirements are maintained during the complete design/development life-cycle. It also describes the algorithm architecture/engineering approach that will be used to deploy these algorithms, and provides a preliminary implementation road map for the development of the GOES-R GS software infrastructure, and a view into the integration of the framework and data model into the final design

    Trajectory and stability of Lagrangian point L2L_2 in the Sun-Earth system

    This paper describes design of the trajectory and analysis of the stability of collinear point L2L_2 in the Sun-Earth system. The modified restricted three body problem with additional gravitational potential from the belt is used as the model for the Sun-Earth system. The effect of radiation pressure of the Sun and oblate shape of the Earth are considered. The point L2L_2 is asymptotically stable upto a specific value of time tt correspond to each set of values of parameters and initial conditions.     Association of Body Composition Methods and Occupational Readiness: Differences between Veterans and Rookies

    The increasing prevalence of obesity among United States firefighters has prompted concerns. Current guidelines from National Fire Protection Association 1582 rely on body mass index (BMI) for obesity assessment. However, BMI’s inability to distinguish between fat and lean mass raises validity issues. An alternative measurement, body fat percentage (BF%) has emerged as a potentially more accurate tool for assessing obesity. Moreover, the widely used Physical Ability Test (PAT) may face complexities in evaluating firefighters\u27 readiness due to variations in body composition (BC) among individuals. Additionally, the combined influence of years in service, BC variations, and the aforementioned factors could potentially impact PAT performance and, consequently, firefighters\u27 overall readiness. PURPOSE: To examine whether differences exist in obesity categorization when using BMI compared to BF% and how these measurements affect the performance of rookie (R) and veteran (V) firefighters in the PAT. METHODS: Sixty-two male firefighters were analyzed, categorized per American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Veteran status was determined by having more than one year of experience. Firefighters underwent full gear PAT assessments on separate days. Log-linear and linear modeling, with Obese as the reference for BMI and BF%, and R for experience, were used. Age was controlled in linear modeling. Statistical analysis was conducted in Jamovi version 2.4.8, with significance set at p \u3c 0.05. RESULTS: Categorical modeling was significant, highlighting the impact of years of experience, BF%, BMI, and the interaction between BF% and BMI (x229 = 78.34, p \u3c0.001). The continuous PAT model also showed significance, with significant differences observed in years of experience, BMI, and BF% (F8,53 = 5.02, p \u3c 0.001, R2 = 0.43). CONCLUSION: This study supports previous work from our laboratory and highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the use of BMI in assessing obesity among firefighters. It emphasizes the potential disparities between BMI and BF% categorization and their impact on firefighters\u27 performance in the PAT, shedding light on the complex relationship between body composition, years of experience, and occupational readiness

    Defining ship structural and machinery onboard measurement campaign for energy efficient operations

    In the day-to-day ship operations, structural and machinery failures may lead to major accidents, endangering crew and passengers lives onboard, posing a threat to the environment and having a great impact in terms of ship performance and business losses. The ship onboard measurement methodology aims in addressing which systems should be monitored, when the scheduling of monitoring should occur, who will carry out the measurements and how. Information is acquired from data for machinery and structures collected from sources such as Classification Societies, ship structural drawings, planned maintenance systems, dry-dock reports and real time monitoring data. Through the examination of the above, the specifications of the various ship system parameters to be measured are conducted alongside the number of sensors to be installed. Different scenarios for monitoring the condition and performance of systems either on a day-to-day basis or periodically using either permanent sensors installed onboard the ship or portable equipment or also a combination of them is evaluated. Moreover, parameter measurements are concentrated on various systems temperatures, pressures and monitoring techniques such as vibration monitoring. The onboard measurement outcome will be further utilised for input in tools capable of calculating and assessing the performance and reliability of the ship, thus ensuring safe and efficient vessel operation. The deployment of the developed onboard system will be studied under realistic operational conditions for three different ship types, i.e. tanker, bulk carrier and container ship

    A comprehensive analysis of the hard X-ray spectra of bright Seyfert galaxies

    Hard X-ray spectra of 28 bright Seyfert galaxies observed with INTEGRAL were analyzed together with the X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton, Suzaku and RXTE. These broad-band data were fitted with a model assuming a thermal Comptonization as a primary continuum component. We tested several model options through a fitting of the Comptonized continuum accompanied by a complex absorption and a Compton reflection. Both the large data set used and the model space explored allowed us to accurately determine a mean temperature kTe of the electron plasma, the Compton parameter y and the Compton reflection strength R for the majority of objects in the sample. Our main finding is that a vast majority of the sample (20 objects) is characterized by kTe < 100 keV, and only for two objects we found kTe > 200 keV. The median kTe for entire sample is 48(-14,+57) keV. The distribution of the y parameter is bimodal, with a broad component centered at ~0.8 and a narrow peak at ~1.1. A complex, dual absorber model improved the fit for all data sets, compared to a simple absorption model, reducing the fitted strength of Compton reflection by a factor of about 2. Modest reflection (median R ~0.32) together with a high ratio of Comptonized to seed photon fluxes point towards a geometry with a compact hard X-ray emitting region well separated from the accretion disc. Our results imply that the template Seyferts spectra used in AGN population synthesis models should be revised.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
