    New calibrations and time stability of the response of the INTERCAST CR-39

    We present new calibrations of different production batches (from 1989 to 1999) of the INTERCAST CR-39, using the BNL-AGS 1 A GeV iron beam. The comparison with previous results, obtained with the 158 A GeV lead beam from the CERN-SPS shows that, while each production batch has a different calibration curve (mainly due to minor differences in the production conditions), the aging effect is negligible. We also tested the dependence of the CR-39 response from the time elapsed between exposure and analysis (fading effect). The fading effect, if present, is less than 10%.     Further observations on the relationship of EMG and muscle force

    Human skeletal muscle may be regarded as an electro-mechanical transducer. Its physiological input is a neural signal originating at the alpha motoneurons in the spinal cord and its output is force and muscle contraction, these both being dependent on the external load. Some experimental data taken during voluntary efforts around the ankle joint and by direct electrical stimulation of the nerve are described. Some of these experiments are simulated by an analog model, the input of which is recorded physiological soleus muscle EMG. The output is simulated foot torque. Limitations of a linear model and effect of some nonlinearities are discussed

    Atmospheric muon background in the ANTARES detector

    An evaluation of the background due to atmospheric muons in the ANTARES high energy neutrino telescope is presented. Two different codes for atmospheric shower simulation have been used. Results from comparisons between these codes at sea level and detector level are presented.     CAKE (Cosmic Abundances below Knee Energies) was a prototype balloon experiment for the determination of the charge spectra and of abundances of the primary cosmic-rays (CR) with Z>>10. It was a passive instrument made of layers of CR39 and Lexan nuclear track detectors; it had a geometric acceptance of \sim0.7 m2^2sr for Fe nuclei. Here, the scanning and analysis strategies, the algorithms used for the off-line filtering and for the tracking in automated mode of the primary cosmic rays are presented, together with the resulting CR charge distribution and their abundances.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure

    Cubesat mission with technological demonstrator payload for high data rate downlink and health monitoring

    The HyperCube payload will be composed by two different technological experiment, an high data-rate C band antenna, and a demonstrator for a remote structural health monitoring system. The first one has been thought with the aim to give Cubesats the capability to download an high quantity of data; it could be useful either if the data requiring the high data-rate downlink is on-board generated or simply retransmitted. The applications for which this payload could be used are several; an example for the first category of application is to download the data generated by another payload; the high data-rate capability could be necessary due to the narrow visibility window with the ground station, affected also by the absence of an active AOCS subsystem, which makes difficult the alignment of the on board antenna with the ground one. But the C band antenna could also be used to act as a “space–repeater”, downloading up–linked information. The second payload is related to the need to take under strictly control the health of the structures (not only the ones strictly belonging to primary structures, but also that of any subsystem component). In order to do that, smart materials are integrated into the structural component that need to be monitored; in particular, piezoelectric patches are used as sensors. As the structure is stressed, and the integrated piezoelectric sensors are subjected to mechanical deformation, they produce an electric signal; acquiring and properly studying the produced signal it is possible to monitor the mechanical condition of the structures. The health monitoring system is completed by a MicroController Unit which acquires, samples and stores the signal produced, and a transmitting system, which could be the C band antenna, or the TT&C antenna which each satellite needs

    Nuclear Track Detectors for Environmental Studies and Radiation Monitoring

    Several improvements were made for Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs) used for environmental studies and for particle searches. A new method was used to determine the bulk etch rate of CR39 and Makrofol NTDs. It is based on the simultaneous measurement of the diameter and of the height of etch-pit cones caused by relativistic heavy ions (158 A GeV Pb(82+) and In(49+) ions) and their fragments. The use of alcohol in the etching solution improves the surface quality of NTDs and it raises their thresholds. The detectors were used for the determination of nuclear fragmentation cross sections of Iron and Silicon ions of 1.0 and 0.41 GeV/nucleon. These measurements are important for the determination of doses in hadron therapy and for doses received by astronauts. The detectors were also used in the search of massive particles in the cosmic radiation, for the determination of the mass spectrum of cosmic rays and for the evaluation of Po(210) alpha decay and of natural radon concentrations.Comment: 7 pages, 5 EPS figures.     Guiding-like functions for semilinear evolution equations with retarded nonlinearities

    The paper deals with a semilinear evolution equation in a reflexive and separable Banach space. The non-linear term is multivalued, upper Caratheodory and it depends on a retarded argument. The existence of global almost exact, i.e. classical, solutions is investigated. The results are based on a continuation principle for condensing multifields and the required transversalities derive from the introduction of suitable generalized guiding functions. As a consequence, the equation has a bounded globally viable set.The results are new also in the lack of retard and in the single valued case. A brief discussion of a non-local diffusion model completes this investigation

    The most recent theories on innovation point out the role of social networks, demonstrating how knowledge is intertwined with network communities and social capital represents an essential factor to comprehend innovation. The social network dimension of the innovation process is also acknowledged in the actual definition of an agricultural innovation system (AIS). This study attempts to assess the role played by social capital in agricultural innovation projects co-financed by the Measure 124 of the Rural Development Program (2007-2013) of the Umbria Region (Italy), based on the analysis of 5 evaluation criteria (relevance, innovation, effectiveness, sustainability, and social capital) in relation to 8 selected projects. The obtained results confirm the validity of the proposed methodology both for the purpose of internal monitoring of the project and for the assessment of the measure on the basis of tangible and intangible factors, such as social capital

    Heat stress affects reproductive performance of high producing dairy cows bred in an area of southern Apennines

    A 5-year retrospective (from 2008 to 2012) survey was carried out by analyzing data of high producing dairy cows reared in farms located in an area of southern Apennines. The indicators of fertility obtained were related to either season variations or the temperature-humidity index (THI). A significant lower number of conceptions evaluated per month on an annual basis (NCY), i.e., a parameter obtained by subtracting gestation length to the calving date, was found during the summer months; furthermore, this parameter decreased along with THI increase. The number of heats detected varied equally to NCY and represented the main cause of the lower fertility consequent to heat stress (HS). The age at first calving was not significantly affected by either the season or the THI. The mean number of AI/pregnancy in relation to the calving time was significantly affected by the season but it was not related to THI. The number of days open was significantly larger in the animals calved from January to July than from August to December (163±33 vs 123±36 days; P< 0.001); this causes an annual economic loss of several thousand euro in each farm analyzed. In conclusion, HS causes severe economic losses in dairy farms located in southern Apennines that are mainly due to a lower number of heats detected as well as a larger number of days open and semen doses used
