    Stars in the USNO-B1 Catalog with Proper Motions Between 1.0 and 5.0 arcseconds per year

    This paper examines a subset of objects from the USNO-B1 catalogue with listed proper motions between 1.0 and 5.0 arcseconds per year. We look at the degree of contamination within this range of proper motions, and point out the major sources of spurious high proper motion objects. Roughly 0.1% of the objects in the USNO-B1 catalogue with listed motions between 1.0 and 5.0 arcseconds per year are real. Comparison with the revised version of Luyten's Half Second catalogue indicates that USNO-B1 is only about 47% complete for stars in this range. Preliminary studies indicate that there may be a dip in completeness in USNO-B1 for objects with motions near 0.1 arcseconds per year. We also present two new stars with motions between 1.0 and 5.0 arcseconds per year, 36 new stars with confirmed motions between 0.1 and 1.0 arcseconds per year, several new common proper motion pairs, and the recovery of LHS237a (VBs3).Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures, uses AASTeX v5.2, accepted by A

    Discovery of a new cataclysmic variable through optical variability and X-ray emission

    Aims: We present discovery observations of the new cataclysmic variable star (CV) 1RXS J092737.4-191529, as well as spectra and photometry of SY Vol. The selection technique that turned up these two CVs is described; it should be efficient for finding dwarf novae with high outburst duty cycles. Methods: Two very common observational features of CVs, namely optical variability and X-ray emission, are combined to select targets for follow-up observations. Long-slit spectra were taken to identify CVs in the sample. Results: Two out of three objects selected in this way are CVs. One of these is the known dwarf nova SY Vol, while the second system, 1RXS J092737.4-191529, is a new discovery. We present medium resolution spectra, UBVRIUBVRI magnitudes, and high-speed photometry for both these CVs. Rapid flickering in the light curve of 1RXS J092737.4-191529 confirms the mass transferring binary nature of this object; it is probably a dwarf nova that was in quiescence during our observations.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted to A&

    Cluster Evolution in the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole Survey

    The deepest region of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, at the North Ecliptic Pole, has been studied to produce a complete and unbiased X-ray selected sample of clusters of galaxies. This sample is used to investigate the nature of cluster evolution and explore potential implications for large-scale structure models. The survey is 99.6% optically identified. Spectroscopic redshifts have been measured for all the extragalactic identifications. In this Letter, first results on cluster evolution are presented based on a comparison between the number of the observed clusters in the North Ecliptic Pole survey and the number of expected clusters assuming no-evolution models. At z>0.3 there is a deficit of clusters with respect to the local universe which is significant at > 4.7sigma. The evolution appears to commence at L_{0.5-2.0} > 1.8x10^{44} erg s^{-1} in our data. The negative evolution goes in the same direction as the original EMSS result, the results from the 160 deg^{2} survey by Vikhlinin et al. (1998) and the recent results from the RDCS (Rosati et al. 2000). At lower redshifts there is no evidence for evolution, a result in agreement with these and other cluster surveys.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    On the evolutionary behaviour of BL Lac objects

    We present a new well defined sample of BL Lac objects selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). The sample consists of 39 objects with 35 forming a flux limited sample down to f_X = 8 x 10^{-13} cgs, redshifts are known for 33 objects (and 31 of the complete sample). X-ray spectral properties were determined for each object individually with the RASS data. The luminosity function of RASS selected BL Lac objects is compatible with results provided by objects selected with the Einstein observatory, but the RASS selected sample contains objects with luminosities at least tenfold higher. Our analysis confirms the negative evolution for X-ray selected BL Lac objects found in a sample by the Einstein observatory, the parameterization provides similar results. A subdivision of the sample into halves according to the X-ray to optical flux ratio yielded unexpected results. The extremely X-ray dominated objects have higher redshifts and X-ray luminosities and only this subgroup shows clear signs of strong negative evolution. The evolutionary behaviour of objects with an intermediate spectral energy distribution between X-ray and radio dominated is compatible with no evolution at all. Consequences for unified schemes of X-ray and radio selected BL Lac objects are discussed.We suggest that the intermediate BL Lac objects are the basic BL Lac population. The distinction between the two subgroups can be explained if extreme X-ray dominated BL Lac objects are observed in a state of enhanced X-ray activity.Comment: 14 pages incl. 8 figures, accepted by A&

    The Spatial Clustering of ROSAT All-Sky Survey AGN: I. The cross-correlation function with SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies

    We investigate the clustering properties of ~1550 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at =0.25 detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) through their measured cross-correlation function with ~46,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By measuring the cross-correlation of our AGN sample with a larger tracer set of LRGs, we both minimize shot noise errors due to the relatively small AGN sample size and avoid systematic errors due to the spatially varying Galactic absorption that would affect direct measurements of the auto-correlation function (ACF) of the AGN sample. The measured ACF correlation length for the total RASS-AGN sample (=1.5 x 10^(44) erg/s) is r_0=4.3^{+0.4}_{-0.5} h^(-1) Mpc and the slope \gamma=1.7^{+0.1}_{-0.1}. Splitting the sample into low and high L_X samples at L_(0.5-10 keV)=10^(44) erg/s, we detect an X-ray luminosity dependence of the clustering amplitude at the ~2.5 \sigma level. The low L_X sample has r_0=3.3^{+0.6}_{-0.8} h^(-1) Mpc (\gamma=1.7^{+0.4}_{-0.3}), which is similar to the correlation length of blue star-forming galaxies at low redshift. The high L_X sample has r_0=5.4^{+0.7}_{-1.0} h^(-1) Mpc (\gamma=1.9^{+0.2}_{-0.2}), which is consistent with the clustering of red galaxies. From the observed clustering amplitude, we infer that the typical dark matter halo (DMH) mass harboring RASS-AGN with broad optical emission lines is log (M_DMH/(h^(-1) M_SUN)) =12.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}, 11.8^{+0.6}_{-\infty}, 13.1^{+0.2}_{-0.4} for the total, low L_X, and high L_X RASS-AGN samples, respectively.Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, 713, 558 (2010), 16 pages, 11 figures, 4 table

    CIRS: Cluster Infall Regions in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey I. Infall Patterns and Mass Profiles

    We use the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to test the ubiquity of infall patterns around galaxy clusters and measure cluster mass profiles to large radii. We match X-ray cluster catalogs with SDSS, search for infall patterns, and compute mass profiles for a complete sample of X-ray selected clusters. Very clean infall patterns are apparent in most of the clusters, with the fraction decreasing with increasing redshift due to shallower sampling. All 72 clusters in a well-defined sample limited by redshift (ensuring good sampling) and X-ray flux (excluding superpositions) show infall patterns sufficient to apply the caustic technique. This sample is by far the largest sample of cluster mass profiles extending to large radii to date. Similar to CAIRNS, cluster infall patterns are better defined in observations than in simulations. Further work is needed to determine the source of this difference. We use the infall patterns to compute mass profiles for 72 clusters and compare them to model profiles. Cluster scaling relations using caustic masses agree well with those using X-ray or virial mass estimates, confirming the reliability of the caustic technique. We confirm the conclusion of CAIRNS that cluster infall regions are well fit by NFW and Hernquist profiles and poorly fit by singular isothermal spheres. This much larger sample enables new comparisons of cluster properties with those in simulations. The shapes (specifically, NFW concentrations) of the mass profiles agree well with the predictions of simulations. The mass inside the turnaround radius is on average 2.19±\pm0.18 times that within the virial radius.     Unveiling the nature of three INTEGRAL sources through optical spectroscopy

    The results of an optical spectroscopy campaign performed at the Astronomical Observatory of Bologna in Loiano (Italy) on three hard X-ray sources detected by INTEGRAL (IGR J17303-0601, IGR J18027-1455 and IGR J21247+5058) are presented. These data have allowed a determination of the nature for two of them, with IGR J17303-0601 being a low mass X-ray binary in the Galaxy and IGR J18027-1455 a background Type 1 Seyfert galaxy at redshift z = 0.035. IGR J21247+5058, instead, has a quite puzzling spectroscopic appearance, with a broad, redshifted H_alpha complex superimposed onto a `normal' F/G-type Galactic star continuum: these features, together with the spatially coincident extended radio emission, might suggest a chance alignment between a relatively nearby star and a background radio galaxy.     The use of multiple versions of a computer program, independently designed from a common specification, to reduce the effects of an error is discussed. If these versions are designed by independent programming teams, it is expected that a fault in one version will not have the same behavior as any fault in the other versions. Since the errors in the output of the versions are different and uncorrelated, it is possible to run the versions concurrently, cross-check their results at prespecified points, and mask errors. A DEsign DIversity eXperiments (DEDIX) testbed was implemented to study the influence of common mode errors which can result in a failure of the entire system.     1ES 1927+654: Persistent and rapid X-ray variability in an AGN with low intrinsic neutral X-ray absorption and narrow optical emission lines

    We present X-ray and optical observations of the X-ray bright AGN 1ES 1927+654. The X-ray observations obtained with ROSAT and Chandra reveal persistent, rapid and large scale variations, as well as steep 0.1-2.4 keV (Gamma = 2.6 +/- 0.3) and 0.3-7.0 keV (Gamma = 2.7 +/- 0.2) spectra. The measured intrinsic neutral X-ray column density is approximately 7e20cm^-2. The X-ray timing properties indicate that the strong variations originate from a region, a few hundred light seconds from the central black hole, typical for type 1 AGN. High quality optical spectroscopy reveals a typical Seyfert 2 spectrum with some host galaxy contamination and no evidence of Fe II multiplets or broad hydrogen Balmer wings. The intrinsic optical extinction derived from the BLR and NLR are A_V >= 3.7 and A_V=1.7, respectively. The X-ray observations give an A_V value of less than 0.58, in contrast to the optical extinction values. We discuss several ideas to explain this apparent difference in classification including partial covering, an underluminous BLR or a high dust to gas ratio.Comment: 8 pages including 10 figures.
