H-alpha features with hot onsets. II. A contrail fibril
The solar chromosphere observed in H-alpha consists mostly of narrow fibrils.
The longest typically originate in network or plage and arch far over adjacent
internetwork. We use data from multiple telescopes to analyze one well-observed
example in a quiet area. It resulted from the earlier passage of an
accelerating disturbance in which the gas was heated to high temperature as in
the spicule-II phenomenon. After this passage a dark H-Halpha fibril appeared
as a contrail. We use Saha-Boltzmann extinction estimation to gauge the onset
and subsequent visibilities in various diagnostics and conclude that such
H-alpha fibrils can indeed be contrail phenomena, not indicative of the
thermodynamic and magnetic environment when they are observed but of more
dynamic happenings before. They do not connect across internetwork cells but
represent launch tracks of heating events and chart magnetic field during

The enemy within:designing a cell-based gameplay system for cancer education
This paper outlines the design and preliminary evaluation of The Enemy Within, a browser-based game produced to raise awareness of the nature of cancer as a progressive disease. Aimed at high school and young adult audiences, the ambition with the game is to make visible to players the myriad ways in which healthy cells can mutate and ultimately inherit hallmarks of cancer, whilst also demonstrating how both real-world behaviours and underlying genetics impact both positively and negatively on cell health
The Quiet-Sun Photosphere and Chromosphere
The overall structure and the fine structure of the solar photosphere outside
active regions are largely understood, except possibly important roles of a
turbulent near-surface dynamo at its bottom, internal gravity waves at its top,
and small-scale vorticity. Classical 1D static radiation-escape modelling has
been replaced by 3D time-dependent MHD simulations that come closer to reality.
The solar chromosphere, in contrast, remains ill-understood although its
pivotal role in coronal mass and energy loading makes it a principal research
area. Its fine structure defines its overall structure, so that hard-to-observe
and hard-to-model small-scale dynamical processes are the key to understanding.
However, both chromospheric observation and chromospheric simulation presently
mature towards the required sophistication. The open-field features seem of

Post-grooming furunculose bij een hond
A five-year-old, intact, male labrador retriever was presented on emergency with general complaints of fever, lethargy and anorexia. During clinical examination, very painful skin lesions were noticed dorsally on the neck and back, and there was also a clear left apical systolic murmur with a degree of 4/6. On histopathological examination of the lesional skin, there was rupture of the follicle wall surrounded with a pronounced suppurative inflammation. The dog was diagnosed with post-grooming furunculosis and mitral valve endocardiosis ACVIM stage B2. Culture of the lesional skin and the shampoo used to wash the dog prior to the onset of the skin lesions revealed the presence of the same bacteria, evidencing a clear link between the bathing and development of the skin lesions
On the link between rotation, chromospheric activity and Li abundance in subgiant stars

The PDE4 inhibitor rolipram reverses object memory impairment induced by acute tryptophan depletion in the rat
The selective type IV phosphodiesterase inhibitor, rolipram, has been shown to improve long-term memory and can reverse the cholinergic deficit caused by scopolamine. However, the underlying mechanisms of action of rolipram remain obscure. The present study investigates the effect of rolipram in a serotonergic-deficit model of acute tryptophan depletion (ATD). In addition, the levels of plasma tryptophan (TRP) were compared to object recognition performance. The experiments were conducted using male Wistar rats. The time-dependent effect of ATD treatment (a gelatin-based protein mixture) on plasma TRP levels (0, 1, 3, and 6 h after injection) and object recognition task (ORT) performance (0.5, 1, 3, and 6 h after ATD treatment) was examined. The effect of rolipram (0, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) was tested in the condition in which ATD induced a clear memory deficit. ATD significantly lowered the plasma TRP ratio (TRP/Sigma large neutral amino acid) with a maximum of 48%, approximately 1 h after administration. Furthermore, ATD impairs ORT performance when administered 3 h before testing. Rolipram (0.1 mg/kg) reversed the memory deficit induced by ATD in a dose-dependent manner. On the basis of previous studies and the ability to reverse a serotonergic deficit, we suggest that rolipram may act through elevation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels and subsequent increase in neurotransmitter release
