Pattern of seismicity in the Lucanian Apennines and foredeep (Southern Italy) from recording by SAPTEX temporary array
The deployment of a temporary seismic network in Southern Italy during 2001-2004 (the SAPTEX array, Southern
APennine Tomography EXperiment) allowed us to relocate the hypocenters of Southern Apennines earthquakes
with low uncertainty among the location parameters. The best array distribution of the SAPTEX network
for the analysis of seismicity in the Lucanian Apennines and foredeep was reached in the first two years of
recording. The SAPTEX data were merged with those of the Italian National Seismic Network (RSNC) operated
by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). For the hypocenters computation of events in
the upper Agri Valley we also included P- and S- waves arrivals from the local Eni-Agip network. The seismicity
for the Lucanian Apennines and foredeep in the analyzed period has magnitudes ranging from 2.0 to 4.1. A
major finding is the identification of two different crustal domains: the westernmost characterizing the chain,
mostly with shallow earthquakes (within about 20 km of depth), and the easternmost one belonging to the outer
margin of the chain and to the foredeep, with deeper seismicity (mostly between 20-40 km of depth). Thirty
fault-plane solutions were computed and used for stress inversion; most of them are related to earthquakes within
the chain sector and indicate a generalized NE-SW extension. Moreover, the dense network allowed us to improve
the location of events relative to two low magnitude sequences which occurred in the study period
A new measurement of J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present a new measurement of J/psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158
GeV/nucleon, from the data sample collected in year 2000 by the NA50
Collaboration, under improved experimental conditions with respect to previous
years. With the target system placed in vacuum, the setup was better adapted to
study, in particular, the most peripheral nuclear collisions with unprecedented
accuracy. The analysis of this data sample shows that the (J/psi)/Drell-Yan
cross-sections ratio measured in the most peripheral Pb-Pb interactions is in
good agreement with the nuclear absorption pattern extrapolated from the
studies of proton-nucleus collisions. Furthermore, this new measurement
confirms our previous observation that the (J/psi)/Drell-Yan cross-sections
ratio departs from the normal nuclear absorption pattern for semi-central Pb-Pb
collisions and that this ratio persistently decreases up to the most central
collisions.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
The dependence of the anomalous J/psi suppression on the number of participant nucleons
The observation of an anomalous J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions by the NA50 Collaboration can be considered as the most striking indication for the deconfinement of quarks and gluons at SPS energies. In this Letter, we determine the J/psi suppression pattern as a function of the forward hadronic energy E-ZDC measured in a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC). The direct connection between EZDC and the geometry of the collision allows us to calculate, within a Glauber approach, the precise relation between the number of participant nucleons N-part and E-ZDC. Then, we check if the experimental data can be better explained by a sudden or a smooth onset of the anomalous J/psi suppression as a function of the number of participants. Centrality Behaviour of J/ Production in Na50
The J/ production in 158 A GeV Pb-Pb interactions is studied, in the
dimuon decay channel, as a function of centrality, as measured with the
electromagnetic or with the very forward calorimeters. After a first sharp
variation at mid centrality, both patterns continue to fall down and exhibit a
curvature change at high centrality values. This trend excludes any
conventional hadronic model and is in agreement with a deconfined quark-gluon
phase scenario. We report also preliminary results on the measured charged
multiplicity, as given by a dedicated detector.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures (in eps) talk given at XXXI International

Suppressed pi^0 Production at Large Transverse Momentum in Central Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
Transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions in the range 1 < p_T < 10 GeV/c
have been measured at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The pi^0 multiplicity in central reactions
is significantly below the yields measured at the same sqrt(s_NN) in peripheral
Au+Au and p+p reactions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. For
the most central bin, the suppression factor is ~2.5 at p_T = 2 GeV/c and
increases to ~4-5 at p_T ~= 4 GeV/c. At larger p_T, the suppression remains
constant within errors. The deficit is already apparent in semi-peripheral
reactions and increases smoothly with centrality.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, RevTeX, 3 figures, 2 tables. Submitted to

Centrality dependence of charged hadron production in deuteron+gold and nucleon+gold collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV
We present transverse momentum (p_T) spectra of charged hadrons measured in
deuteron-gold and nucleon-gold collisions at \sqrts = 200 GeV for four
centrality classes. Nucleon-gold collisions were selected by tagging events in
which a spectator nucleon was observed in one of two forward rapidity
detectors. The spectra and yields were investigated as a function of the number
of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, \nu, suffered by deuteron nucleons. A
comparison of charged particle yields to those in p+p collisions show that the
yield per nucleon-nucleon collision saturates with \nu for high momentum
particles. We also present the charged hadron to neutral pion ratios as a
function of p_T.Comment: 330 authors, 15 pages text, 16 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys.

J/Psi Production in Au-Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
First results on charm quarkonia production in heavy ion collisions at the
Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The yield of J/Psi's
measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at
mid-rapidity for Au-Au reactions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV are analyzed as a
function of collision centrality. For this analysis we have studied 49.3
million minimum bias Au-Au reactions. We present the J/Psi invariant yield
dN/dy for peripheral and mid-central reactions. For the most central collisions
where we observe no signal above background, we quote 90% confidence level
upper limits. We compare these results with our J/Psi measurement from
proton-proton reactions at the same energy. We find that our measurements are
not consistent with models that predict strong enhancement relative to binary
collision scaling.Comment: 325 authors, 11 pages text, 6 figures, 4 tables, RevTeX 4. Accepted

Azimuthal Angle Correlations for Rapidity Separated Hadron Pairs in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged
hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and
charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in deuteron-gold (d+Au) and proton-proton (p+p)
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Jet structures are observed in the
correlations which we quantify in terms of the conditional yield and angular
width of away side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons
in the gold nucleus carrying nucleon momentum fraction x~0.1 to x~0.01. Within
this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.Comment: 330 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, no tables. Submitted to Phys.

Nuclear Modification Factors for Hadrons At Forward and Backward Rapidities in Deuteron-Gold Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
We report on charged hadron production in deuteron-gold reactions at
sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Our measurements in the deuteron-direction cover 1.4 <
eta < 2.2, referred to as forward rapidity, and in the gold-direction -2.0 <
eta < -1.4, referred to as backward rapidity, and a transverse momentum range
p_T = 0.5-4.0 GeV/c. We compare the relative yields for different deuteron-gold
collision centrality classes. We observe a suppression relative to binary
collision scaling at forward rapidity, sensitive to low momentum fraction (x)
partons in the gold nucleus, and an enhancement at backward rapidity, sensitive
to high momentum fraction partons in the gold nucleus.Comment: 330 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, REVTeX4. Published in Physical

Scaling properties of proton and anti-proton production in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions
We report on the yield of protons and anti-protons, as a function of
centrality and transverse momentum, in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
measured at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. In central
collisions at intermediate transverse momenta (1.5 < p_T < 4.5 GeV/c) a
significant fraction of all produced particles are protons and anti-protons.
They show a centrality-scaling behavior different from that of pions. The
p-bar/pion and p/pion ratios are enhanced compared to peripheral Au+Au, p+p,
and electron+positron collisions. This enhancement is limited to p_T < 5 GeV/c
as deduced from the ratio of charged hadrons to pi^0 measured in the range 1.5
< p_T < 9 GeV/c.Comment: 325 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, RevTeX 4. Minor changes to text
