    Fifty Years After the Passage of Title VII: Is it Time for the Government to Use the Bully Pulpit to Enact a Status-Blind Harassment Statute?

    (Excerpt) This Article provides a blueprint for how Congress can accept Justice Ginsburg’s challenge to protect workers, particularly in precarious economic times when employees cannot easily switch jobs and in an era in which the vast majority of workers do not have the protection of a collective bargaining agreement. Not only should Congress redefine “supervisor,” but Congress should also consider a related underlying factor that was not raised in the Vance case—the issue of workplace bullying. If workplace bullying were a viable cause of action, Maetta Vance likely would have prevailed in a state that entitled her to relief because she could have added that claim to her federal discrimination and hostile work environment claims. Vance is just one of an estimated thirty-seven million victims—twenty-seven percent of the U.S. workforce—of this pervasive problem. The problem extends far beyond the reach of Title VII—indeed, most bullying is same sex—and only twenty percent of bullying cases could also pass muster as cognizable harassment claims. The problem is so serious that legislators in twenty-eight states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands introduced bills to ban bullying in the workplace and provide remedies for its victims

    Cost - minimization Analysis of Treprostinil vs. Epoprostenol as an Alternate to Oral Therapy: Non - responders for the Treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

    Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Treprostinil was compared to epoprostenol for the economic impact of treating IPAH patients who failed or were not candidates for bosentan. METHODS: The model was a cost-minimization analysis, assuming clinical equivalence was achieved by proper dosing of both drugs, in terms of survival and surrogate measures. Two theoretical cohorts of 270 patients were treated with subcutaneous treprostinil and intravenous epoprostenol, and were evaluated over 3 years using a spreadsheet model. Annual survival rates were estimated for the cohorts so that at endpoint 114 (42%) patients survived in both groups. The model utilized resource valuation data for medication and supply costs from Medicare; hospital, consultation, surgical, and diagnostic procedural fees from North Carolina hospitals; and costs to treat adverse events from published sources. Costs were obtained from standard lists and were presented as 2003 US dollars, discounted at 3%. Sensitivity analyses were performed testing all model uncertainties. RESULTS: In the base case analysis, treprostinil demonstrated savings of 22,701 US dollars and 37,433 US dollars per patient over 1- and 3-year time horizons, respectively. The greatest savings came from reduced or minimal hospitalizations attributed to the dose titration and treatment of adverse events, such as sepsis, associated with epoprostenol and its delivery system. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses resulted in average 3-year cost-savings of 41,051 US dollars (Standard Deviation = 13,902 US dollars) per patient. CONCLUSIONS: By initiating and continuing treatment with treprostinil over a 3-year period, the economic burden associated with IPAH may be reduced compared to treatment with epoprostenol. The greatest saving with treprostinil was attributed to decreased sepsis

    Peculiarities of a Colloidal Polysaccharide of Newly Isolated Iron Oxidizing Bacteria in Armenia

    Microorganisms belonging to different systematic and physiological groups produce various intra- and extracellular polysaccharides, which both play an important role in the life of microorganisms and have great practical application. Iron and sulfur oxidizing bacteria produce capsular (EPS) and colloidal polysaccharides. At present the properties and functional role of EPS are well studied. However, the properties of the colloidal polysaccharides produced by iron oxidizing bacteria have not been sufficiently explored. A new iron oxidizing bacteria Leptospirillum ferriphilium CC was isolated from sulfide ores of Armenia. Its morphological and physiological features have been studied. A colloidal polysaccharide has been isolated with the use of an original method developed by the authors, and its physical and chemical properties have been studied. It has been shown that the colloidal polysaccharide consists of three different monomers- glucose, fructose, mannose.. Investigations with a complex method of optical polarization microscopy and analytical programs allowed determining the size, shape change, perimeter, degree of hydratation and crystallization at 0.07% and 0.04% of polysaccharide concentration. It was shown that the size of a polysaccharide colloidal particle does not much depend on polysaccharide concentration, however, the number of identical colloidal formations is dependent on the concentration of polysaccharide

    Epithelial Na \u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e sodium channels in magnocellular cells of the rat supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei

    The epithelial Na + channels (ENaCs) are present in kidney and contribute to Na + and water homeostasis. All three ENaC subunits (α, β, and γ) were demonstrated in the cardiovascular regulatory centers of the rat brain, including the magnocellular neurons (MNCs) in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). However, the functional significance of ENaCs in vasopressin (VP) and oxytocin (OT) synthesizing MNCs is completely unknown. In this study, we show with immunocytochemical double-labeling that the α-ENaC is colocalized with either VP or OT in MNCs in the SON and PVN. In addition, parvocellular neurons in the dorsal, ventrolateral, and posterior subregions of the PVN (not immunoreactive to VP or OT) are also immunoreactive for α-ENaC. In contrast, immunoreactivity to β- and γ-ENaC is colocalized with VP alone within the MNCs. Furthermore, immunoreactivity for a known target for ENaC expression, the mineralcorticoid receptor (MR), is colocalized with both VP and OT in MNCs. Using single-cell RT-PCR, we detected mRNA for all three ENaC subunits and MR in cDNA libraries derived from single MNCs. In whole cell voltage clamp recordings, application of the ENaC blocker benzamil reversibly reduced a steady-state inward current and decreased cell membrane conductance approximately twofold. Finally, benzamil caused membrane hyperpolarization in a majority of VP and about one-half of OT neurons in both spontaneously firing and quiet cells. These results strongly suggest the presence of functional ENaCs that may affect the firing patterns of MNCs, which ultimately control the secretion of VP and OT. © 2012 the American Physiological Society

Our project was designed to promote A Better Educated City by partnering with Daniel Hale Williams Elementary School; recently designated as a Magnet School for STEM Studies. During the 2014-2015 academic year, two CUNY students worked to develop and implement an Educational Outreach Program which provided children in grades 1-5 with exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

    Consumers in Trinidad and Tobago: Value Seekers or Quality Seekers? The Case of Fresh Tomato

    As income levels and knowledge of food safety increases, consumers are more deliberate in their purchasing decisions. This study examined the factors that influenced consumers' purchasing decisions relating to the quality of tomatoes. A convenient sample of 373 consumers was interviewed with a structured questionnaire. Results indicated that price was the highest ranked attribute. Factor analysis permitted a decision rule used to separate consumers into value seekers and quality seekers. Income, education and gender were significant predictors of the probability that a person is a quality seeker. Agricultural stakeholders must pay increased importance on quality attributes to satisfy changing demands

    Quality of reporting of trial abstracts needs to be improved: using the CONSORT for abstracts to assess the four leading Chinese medical journals of traditional Chinese medicine

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Due to language limitations, the abstract of journal article may be the only way for people of non-Chinese speaking countries to know about trials in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, little is known about the reporting quality of these trial abstracts. Our study is to assess the reporting quality of abstracts of randomized controlled trials (RCT) published in four leading Chinese medical journals of TCM, and to identify any differences in reporting between the Chinese and English version of the same abstract publication.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Two reviewers hand-searched the Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, the China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica and the Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion for all abstracts of RCTs published between 2006 and 2007. Two reviewers independently assessed the reporting quality of the Chinese and English version of all eligible abstracts based on a modified version of the CONSORT for reporting randomised trials in journal and conference abstracts (CONSORT for abstracts).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We identified a total of 345 RCTs of TCM with both a Chinese and English abstract. More than half of Chinese abstracts reported details of the trial participants (68%; 234/345), control group intervention (52%; 179/345), the number of participants randomized (73%; 253/345) and benefits when interpreting the trial results (55%; 190/345). Reporting of methodological quality or key features of trial design and trial results were poor; only 2% (7/345) included details of the trial design, 3% (11/345) defined the primary outcome, 5% (17/345) described the methods of random sequence generation, and only 4% (13/345) reported the number of participants analyzed. No abstracts provided details on allocation concealment and trial registration. The percentage agreement in reporting (between the Chinese and English version of the same abstract) ranged from 84% to 100% across individual checklist item.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The reporting quality of abstracts of RCTs published in these four TCM journals needs to be improved. Since none of the four journals adopted CONSORT for Abstracts, we hope that the introduction and adoption of CONSORT for Abstracts by TCM journals will lead to an improvement in reporting quality.</p

    Evolution of spiral and scroll waves of excitation in a mathematical model of ischaemic border zone

    Abnormal electrical activity from the boundaries of ischemic cardiac tissue is recognized as one of the major causes in generation of ischemia-reperfusion arrhythmias. Here we present theoretical analysis of the waves of electrical activity that can rise on the boundary of cardiac cell network upon its recovery from ischaemia-like conditions. The main factors included in our analysis are macroscopic gradients of the cell-to-cell coupling and cell excitability and microscopic heterogeneity of individual cells. The interplay between these factors allows one to explain how spirals form, drift together with the moving boundary, get transiently pinned to local inhomogeneities, and finally penetrate into the bulk of the well-coupled tissue where they reach macroscopic scale. The asymptotic theory of the drift of spiral and scroll waves based on response functions provides explanation of the drifts involved in this mechanism, with the exception of effects due to the discreteness of cardiac tissue. In particular, this asymptotic theory allows an extrapolation of 2D events into 3D, which has shown that cells within the border zone can give rise to 3D analogues of spirals, the scroll waves. When and if such scroll waves escape into a better coupled tissue, they are likely to collapse due to the positive filament tension. However, our simulations have shown that such collapse of newly generated scrolls is not inevitable and that under certain conditions filament tension becomes negative, leading to scroll filaments to expand and multiply leading to a fibrillation-like state within small areas of cardiac tissue.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, appendix and 2 movies, as accepted to PLoS ONE 2011/08/0

    Measurement of psychological entitlement in 28 countries

    This article presents the cross-cultural validation of the Entitlement Attitudes Questionnaire, a tool designed to measure three facets of psychological entitlement: active, passive, and revenge entitlement. Active entitlement was defined as the tendency to protect individual rights based on self-worthiness. Passive entitlement was defined as the belief in obligations to and expectations toward other people and institutions for the fulfillment of the individual’s needs. Revenge entitlement was defined as the tendency to protect one’s individual rights when violated by others and the tendency to reciprocate insults. The 15-item EAQ was validated in a series of three studies: the first one on a general Polish sample (N = 1,900), the second one on a sample of Polish students (N = 199), and the third one on student samples from 28 countries (N = 5,979). A three-factor solution was confirmed across all samples. Examination of measurement equivalence indicated partial metric invariance of EAQ for all national samples.
