    Coordinate kinematic models in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame releases

    International audienceIn the latest International Terrestrial Reference System realization (ITRF2014) combination model, new types of displacements have been introduced by means of mathematical functions. The addition of these functions has led to the implementation of new constraints to define the reference frame. This work was anticipated by A. Dermanis (2008) who derived constraint equations for different kinematic models. This paper presents the fundamental theoretical concepts that have been used to derive the latest International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). A new physical interpretation of the partial inner constraints involving transformation parameters is presented to supplement earlier work. By reviewing the various possibilities that could have been implemented to enhance the ITRF coordinate variations, this paper justifies the ITRF2014 chosen kinematic model and why it still does not include functions suggested by Dermanis (2008)

    Simulation and evaluation of a new PET system based on liquid xenon as detection medium

CussoneauDue to its intrinsic physical properties, high density and atomic number, fast scintillation, high scintillation light yield and low ionization potential, liquid xenon is an excellent medium for the tracking and the accurate energy measurement of γ-rays in the MeV energy domain. The use of liquid xenon associated to a micro gap structure device[1] to measure 511 keV γ-rays in PET system is under investigation at Subatech. A Geant3 simulation of a full PET design made of lXe-TPC modules has been developed and the first estimations of the performances from a realistic detector are very promising: good overall sensitivity to 511 keV γ's (~ 93% for a 9 cm lXe module), good three-dimensional spatial resolution (250 µm FWHM, for first interaction vertex localization). The measurement of the 3 coordinates of the interaction vertices and the energy loss associated allow to reconstruct the correct Compton sequence of correlated annihilation γ-rays. Hence the capability to identify the first interaction vertex leads to major progresses in PET imaging: a parallax free PET tomograph with high detection sensitivity and spatial resolution. Moreover, such lXe-PET camera have an excellent rejection power on scattered events in 3D reconstruction mode

    Jump-diffusion unravelling of a non Markovian generalized Lindblad master equation

    The "correlated-projection technique" has been successfully applied to derive a large class of highly non Markovian dynamics, the so called non Markovian generalized Lindblad type equations or Lindblad rate equations. In this article, general unravellings are presented for these equations, described in terms of jump-diffusion stochastic differential equations for wave functions. We show also that the proposed unravelling can be interpreted in terms of measurements continuous in time, but with some conceptual restrictions. The main point in the measurement interpretation is that the structure itself of the underlying mathematical theory poses restrictions on what can be considered as observable and what is not; such restrictions can be seen as the effect of some kind of superselection rule. Finally, we develop a concrete example and we discuss possible effects on the heterodyne spectrum of a two-level system due to a structured thermal-like bath with memory.Comment: 23 page

    Analytic and Gevrey Hypoellipticity for Perturbed Sums of Squares Operators

    We prove a couple of results concerning pseudodifferential perturbations of differential operators being sums of squares of vector fields and satisfying H\"ormander's condition. The first is on the minimal Gevrey regularity: if a sum of squares with analytic coefficients is perturbed with a pseudodifferential operator of order strictly less than its subelliptic index it still has the Gevrey minimal regularity. We also prove a statement concerning real analytic hypoellipticity for the same type of pseudodifferential perturbations, provided the operator satisfies to some extra conditions (see Theorem 1.2 below) that ensure the analytic hypoellipticity

    New approach of fragment charge correlations in 129Xe+(nat)Sn central collisions

    A previous analysis of the charge (Z) correlations in the ΔZ−\Delta Z- plane for Xe+Sn central collisions at 32 MeV/u has shown an enhancement in the production of equally sized fragments (low ΔZ\Delta Z) which was interpreted as an evidence for spinodal decomposition. However the signal is weak and rises the question of the estimation of the uncorrelated yield. After a critical analysis of its robustness, we propose in this paper a new technique to build the uncorrelated yield in the charge correlation function. The application of this method to Xe+Sn central collision data at 32, 39, 45 and 50 MeV/u does not show any particular enhancement of the correlation function in any ΔZ\Delta Z bin.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, revised version with an added figure and minor changes.     Sigmoid stricture associated with diverticular disease should be an indication for elective surgery with lymph node clearance

    BACKGROUND: The literature concerning stricture secondary to diverticulitis is poor. Stricture in this setting should be an indication for surgery because (a) of the potential risk of cancer and (b) morbidity is not increased compared to other indications for colectomy. The goal of this report is to study the post-surgical morbidity and the quality of life in patients after sigmoidectomy for sigmoid stricture associated with diverticular disease. METHOD: This is a monocenter retrospective observational study including patients with a preoperative diagnosis of sigmoid stricture associated with diverticular disease undergoing operation between Jan 1, 2007 and Dec 31, 2013. The GastroIntestinal Quality of Life Index was used to assess patient satisfaction. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were included of which nine were female. Median age was 69.5 (46-84) and the median body mass index was 23.55kg/m(2) (17.2-28.4). Elective sigmoidectomy was performed in all 16 patients. Overall, complications occurred in five patients (31.2%) (4 minor complications and 1 major complication according to the Dindo and Clavien Classification); none resulted in death. Pathology identified two adenocarcinomas (12.5%). The mean GastroIntestinal Quality of Life Index was 122 (67-144) and 10/11 patients were satisfied with their surgical intervention. CONCLUSION: Sigmoid stricture prevents endoscopic exploration of the entire colon and thus it may prove difficult to rule out a malignancy. Surgery does not impair the quality of life since morbidity is similar to other indications for sigmoidectomy. For these reasons, we recommend that stricture associated with diverticular disease should be an indication for sigmoidectomy including lymph node clearance

For some perturbations of the data, we show that for very small times, we can neglect the Laplacian, and the mechanism is the same as for the corresponding ordinary differential equation.     Le phénomène de déconcentration urbaine constitue une réalité à laquelle de nombreuses métropoles doivent désormais faire face. Perturbant les modèles de localisation des activités à l’échelle métropolitaine, ce processus n’est pas sans bouleverser de nombreux paradigmes, notamment en ce qui a trait aux dynamiques de mobilité. Bien que le lien entre forme urbaine et navettage ait fait l’objet de nombreuses études, les enjeux de cette réorganisation spatiale demeurent mal connus, leurs résultats étant souvent contradictoires. Parallèlement, les préoccupations environnementales grandissantes des métropoles se traduisent par une multiplication des inventaires, plans et politiques visant à réduire leurs émissions de GES. Ainsi, quels impacts la localisation des activités métropolitaines, sous l’influence du phénomène de déconcentration des activités, peut-elle avoir sur le navettage métropolitain et, par conséquent, sur les émissions de GES reliées au transport? À Montréal, le secteur des transports s’avère effectivement crucial en termes de réduction des émissions de GES, ce qui fournit un cadre d’étude particulièrement intéressant pour répondre à cette question.A number of metropolitan areas are confronted with the process of urban diffusion. Under such circumstances, metropolitan-wide urban activity location models are disrupted by this process and pose a challenge to a range of paradigms, particularly those that address the dynamics of mobility. Although a vast literature exists on the relationship between urban form and commuting, the issues that surround spatial reorganization are not clearly defined, and research findings contradict each other. At the same time, metropolitan environmental awareness is growing, leading to greenhouse gas emission inventories, climate change plans and policies to reduce metropolitan emissions. The question on the implications of the diffusion of activities at the metropolitan level on commuting patterns and thus on transportation greenhouse gas emissions can be raised. This paper offers new insights into this question by examining how the transportation sector can play a vital role in Montréal in contributing to the reduction of GHGs

    A self-organized model for cell-differentiation based on variations of molecular decay rates

    Systemic properties of living cells are the result of molecular dynamics governed by so-called genetic regulatory networks (GRN). These networks capture all possible features of cells and are responsible for the immense levels of adaptation characteristic to living systems. At any point in time only small subsets of these networks are active. Any active subset of the GRN leads to the expression of particular sets of molecules (expression modes). The subsets of active networks change over time, leading to the observed complex dynamics of expression patterns. Understanding of this dynamics becomes increasingly important in systems biology and medicine. While the importance of transcription rates and catalytic interactions has been widely recognized in modeling genetic regulatory systems, the understanding of the role of degradation of biochemical agents (mRNA, protein) in regulatory dynamics remains limited. Recent experimental data suggests that there exists a functional relation between mRNA and protein decay rates and expression modes. In this paper we propose a model for the dynamics of successions of sequences of active subnetworks of the GRN. The model is able to reproduce key characteristics of molecular dynamics, including homeostasis, multi-stability, periodic dynamics, alternating activity, differentiability, and self-organized critical dynamics. Moreover the model allows to naturally understand the mechanism behind the relation between decay rates and expression modes. The model explains recent experimental observations that decay-rates (or turnovers) vary between differentiated tissue-classes at a general systemic level and highlights the role of intracellular decay rate control mechanisms in cell differentiation.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
