Doppler Parameters of Hepatic and Renal Hemodynamics in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis
Introduction. There are limited studies on simultaneous evaluation of liver and renal blood flow using Doppler methods. We evaluated and compared the changes of liver and renal Doppler US parameters in patients with liver cirrhosis according to the degree of liver disease. Material and Methods. We assessed a large spectrum of liver and renal Doppler US parameters in 67 patients with liver cirrhosis. Results. Significant differences between Child's classes or score, as well as MELD score, were observed in all investigated intrarenal blood flow Doppler US parameters, except renal artery peak systolic velocity, but only in some of the hepatic ones. The deviations of renal Doppler US parameters were also related with the complications of liver cirrhosis, as well as serum urea and creatinine levels. There was relationship between Doppler US parameters of hepatic artery and the corresponding renal artery Doppler US parameters. The changes of Doppler US parameters were age independent. Conclusion. Our results show, renal Doppler US parameters correlate with the severity and complications of liver cirrhosis. Because of dynamic deviations of renal Doppler US parameters with advance of liver cirrhosis, we recommend Doppler US of renal artery as a part of follow up of these patients
Investigation of the efficiency and selectivity of some herbicides applied on cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.)
The main goal of the present paper was to study the possibilities for application of herbicides during vegetation of cape gooseberry. Herbicides Afalon 100 and 150 ml/da and Agil 85 and 150 ml/da were applied at the moment of the beginning of bud formation on the Plovdiv variety. The control was not treated, but it was hoed. Twenty days later, species, number and weight of weeds; number of dead cape gooseberry plants; weight, diameter and length of fruits (in botanical maturity) were investigated. Productivity and chemical components were determined. The highest effectiveness, lowest weed number and weight were observed when using Afalon 150 ml/da which controls annual dicotyledon weeds. Total weeds weight decreased mainly due to Afalon. The highest percentage of dead plants was established after application of 150 ml/da Afalon. The highest productivity was established in control. Investigated herbicides, Afalon and Agil, did not demonstrate satisfactory selectivity in cape gooseberry

Empirical Investigation on Agile Methods Usage: Issues Identified from Early Adopters in Malaysia
Agile Methods are a set of software practices that can help to produce products faster and at the same time deliver what customers want. Despite the benefits that Agile methods can deliver, however, we found few studies from the Southeast Asia region, particularly Malaysia. As a result, less empirical evidence can be obtained in the country making its implementation harder. To use a new method, experience from other practitioners is critical, which describes what is important, what is possible and what is not possible concerning Agile. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the issues faced by early adopters in Malaysia where Agile methods are still relatively new. The initial study involves 13 participants including project managers, CEOs, founders and software developers from seven organisations. Our study has shown that social and human aspects are important when using Agile methods. While technical aspects have always been considered to exist in software development, we found these factors to be less important when using Agile methods. The results obtained can serve as guidelines to practitioners in the country and the neighbouring regions
Evaluation of the yield and the yield stability of perspective lines of barley
The study was carried out in the Experimental field of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding-Agricultural University, Plovdiv during the period 2009-2011. New breeding lines were investigated using block design with 4 replications and 20 m2 plot size. The aim of the investigation was to estimate barley lines by yield, stability and some important traits, using Obzor as a standard. Applying biometrical and cluster analysis and index of yield stability, it has been established that some breeding lines: numbers 21411003, 21401409 and 21001008, respectively, had better traits in comparison with the standard cultivar "Obzor" as well as stable yields regardless of differences in the climatic conditions over the years. These lines can be certified as new cultivars according to the government's requirements for cultivar testing
The Transcription Factor SpoVG Is of Major Importance for Biofilm Formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis under In Vitro Conditions, but Dispensable for In Vivo Biofilm Formation
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common cause of device related infections on which pathogens
form biofilms (i.e., multilayered cell populations embedded in an extracellular matrix). Here, we
report that the transcription factor SpoVG is essential for the capacity of S. epidermidis to form such
biofilms on artificial surfaces under in vitro conditions. Inactivation of spoVG in the polysaccharide
intercellular adhesin (PIA) producing S. epidermidis strain 1457 yielded a mutant that, unlike its
parental strain, failed to produce a clear biofilm in a microtiter plate-based static biofilm assay. A
decreased biofilm formation capacity was also observed when 1457 ∆spoVG cells were co-cultured
with polyurethane-based peripheral venous catheter fragments under dynamic conditions, while
the cis-complemented 1457 ∆spoVG::spoVG derivative formed biofilms comparable to the levels seen
with the wild-type. Transcriptional studies demonstrated that the deletion of spoVG significantly
altered the expression of the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus by upregulating the transcription of
the ica operon repressor icaR and down-regulating the transcription of icaADBC. Electrophoretic
mobility shift assays (EMSA) revealed an interaction between SpoVG and the icaA-icaR intergenic
region, suggesting SpoVG to promote biofilm formation of S. epidermidis by modulating ica expression.
However, when mice were challenged with the 1457 ∆spoVG mutant in a foreign body infection
model, only marginal differences in biomasses produced on the infected catheter fragments between
the mutant and the parental strain were observed. These findings suggest that SpoVG is critical for the
PIA-dependent biofilm formation of S. epidermis under in vitro conditions, but is largely dispensable
for biofilm formation of this skin commensal under in vivo conditions

A Minimal Threshold of c-di-GMP Is Essential for Fruiting Body Formation and Sporulation in Myxococcus xanthus
Generally, the second messenger bis-(3’-5’)-cyclic dimeric GMP (c-di-GMP) regulates the switch between motile and sessile lifestyles in bacteria. Here, we show that c-di-GMP is an essential regulator of multicellular development in the social bacterium Myxococcus xanthus. In response to starvation, M. xanthus initiates a developmental program that culminates in formation of spore-filled fruiting bodies. We show that c-di-GMP accumulates at elevated levels during development and that this increase is essential for completion of development whereas excess c-di-GMP does not interfere with development. MXAN3735 (renamed DmxB) is identified as a diguanylate cyclase that only functions during development and is responsible for this increased c-di-GMP accumulation. DmxB synthesis is induced in response to starvation, thereby restricting DmxB activity to development. DmxB is essential for development and functions downstream of the Dif chemosensory system to stimulate exopolysaccharide accumulation by inducing transcription of a subset of the genes encoding proteins involved in exopolysaccharide synthesis. The developmental defects in the dmxB mutant are non-cell autonomous and rescued by co-development with a strain proficient in exopolysaccharide synthesis, suggesting reduced exopolysaccharide accumulation as the causative defect in this mutant. The NtrC-like transcriptional regulator EpsI/Nla24, which is required for exopolysaccharide accumulation, is identified as a c-diGMP receptor, and thus a putative target for DmxB generated c-di-GMP. Because DmxB can be—at least partially—functionally replaced by a heterologous diguanylate cyclase, these results altogether suggest a model in which a minimum threshold level of c-di-GMP is essential for the successful completion of multicellular development in M. xanthus
Burden of liver disease progression in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There are uncertainties on the burden of liver disease in patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: We measured adjusted hazard ratios of liver disease progression to hepatocellular cancer and/or decompensated cirrhosis in a 2010-2020 retrospective, bicentric, longitudinal, cohort of 52,066 hospitalized patients with T2D. RESULTS: Mean age was 64±14 years and 58% were men. Alcohol use disorders accounted for 57% of liver-related complications and were associated with all liver-related risk factors. Non-metabolic liver-related risk factors accounted for 37% of the liver burden. T2D control was not associated with liver disease progression. The incidence (95% confidence interval) of liver-related complications and of competing mortality were 3.9 (3.5-4.3) and 27.8 (26.7-28.9) per 1000 person-years at risk, respectively. The cumulative incidence of liver disease progression exceeded the cumulative incidence of competing mortality only in the presence of a well-identified risk factors of liver disease progression, including alcohol use. The incidence of hepatocellular cancer was 0.3 (95% CI, 0.1-0.5) per 1000 person-year in patients with obesity and it increased with age. The adjusted hazard ratios of liver disease progression were 55.7 (40.5-76.6), 3.5 (2.3-5.2), 8.9 (6.9-11.5), and 1.5 (1.1-2.1), for alcoholic liver disease, alcohol use disorders without alcoholic liver disease, non-metabolic liver-related risk factors, and obesity, respectively. The attributable fractions of alcohol use disorders, non-metabolic liver risk-related risk factors, and obesity to the liver burden were 55%, 14%, and 7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this analysis of data from two hospital-based cohorts of patients with T2D, alcohol use disorders, rather than obesity, contributed to most of the liver burden. These results suggest that patients with T2D should be advised to drink minimal amounts of alcohol. LAY SUMMARY: • There is uncertainty on the burden of liver-related complications in patients with type-2 diabetes • We studied the risks of liver cancer and complications of liver disease in over 50,000 patients with type-2 diabetes • We found that alcohol was the main factor associated with complications of liver disease • This finding has major implications on the alcohol advice given to patients with type-2 diabetes
