    A review of New World Laemophloeus Dejean (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae) : 1., species with antennal club of more than three antennomeres

    Five Neotropical species of Laemophloeus Dejean (s. str.) (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae) with antennal clubs of more than three antennomeres are reviewed: L. buenavista Thomas, n.sp.; L. concinnus Thomas, n.sp.; L. germaini Grouvelle; L. macrognathus Reitter; and L. sexarticulatus Kessel. Diagnoses, descriptions of the new species, illustrations, and a key are provided. Laemophloeus prominens Hetschko, proposed as a replacement name for Laemophloeus notabilis Kessel, is synonymized under L. germaini, new synonymy

    Oxygen-isotope and trace element constraints on the origins of silica-rich melts in the subarc mantle

    Peridotitic xenoliths in basaltic andesites from Batan island in the Luzon arc contain silica-rich (broadly dacitic) hydrous melt inclusions that were likely trapped when these rocks were within the upper mantle wedge underlying the arc. These melt inclusions have been previously interpreted to be slab-derived melts. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the oxygen isotope compositions of these inclusions with an ion microprobe. The melt inclusions from Batan xenoliths have δ 18OVSMOW values of 6.45 ± 0.51‰. These values are consistent with the melts having been in oxygen isotope exchange equilibrium with average mantle peridotite at temperatures of ≥875°C. We suggest the δ 18O values of Batan inclusions, as well as their major and trace element compositions, can be explained if they are low-degree melts (or differentiation products of such melts) of peridotites in the mantle wedge that had previously undergone extensive melt extraction followed by metasomatism by small amounts (several percent or less) of slab-derived components. A model based on the trace element contents of Batan inclusions suggests that this metasomatic agent was an aqueous fluid extracted from subducted basalts and had many characteristics similar to slab-derived components of the sources of arc-related basalts at Batan and elsewhere. Batan inclusions bear similarities to “adakites,” a class of arc-related lava widely considered to be slab-derived melts. Our results suggest the alternative interpretation that at least some adakite-like liquids might be generated from low-degree melting of metasomatized peridotites

    A new algorithm for modelling photoionising radiation in smoothed particle hydrodynamics

    We present a new fast algorithm which allows the simulation of ionising radiation emitted from point sources to be included in high-resolution three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of star cluster formation. We employ a Str\"omgren volume technique in which we use the densities of particles near the line-of-sight between the source and a given target particle to locate the ionisation front in the direction of the target. Along with one--dimensional tests, we present fully three--dimensional comparisons of our code with the three--dimensional Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code, MOCASSIN, and show that we achieve good agreement, even in the case of highly complex density fields.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Introduction to the Special Section: Interdisciplinary Collaboration Multi-Level Perspectives on Interdisciplinary Cognition and Team Collaboration: Challenges and Opportunities

    What can insights from psychological science contribute to interdisciplinary research, conducted by individuals or by interdisciplinary teams? Three articles shed light on this by focusing on the micro- (personal), meso- (inter-personal), and macro- (team) level. This Introduction (and Table of Contents) to the 'Special Section on Interdisciplinary Collaborations' offers a brief description of the conference session that was the point of departure for two of the three articles. Frank Kessel and Machiel Keestra organized a panel session for the March 2015 meeting of the International Convention of Psychological Science (ICPS) in Amsterdam, which was the titled “Theoretical and Methodological Contributions of Inter/Trans-Disciplinarity (ID/TD) to Successful Integrative Psychological Science.” Machiel Keestra's article analyses how metacognition and philosophical reflection complement each other by making scholarly experts aware of their cognitive processes and representations. As such, these processes contribute to individual and team interdisciplinary research. Hans Dieleman's article proposes a transdisciplinary hermeneutics that acknowledges the embodied nature of cognition and contributes to richer and more creative interdisciplinary knowledge production. The article by Lash-Marshall, Nomura, Eck & Hirsch was added later and continues by focusing on the macro-level of institutional and team arrangements and the role of facilitative leadership in supporting interdisciplinary team research. The original conference panel session's introduction by Frank Kessel and the contribution on the Toolbox Project's dialogue method by Michael O'Rourke are briefly described as well. Together, this Special Section on Interdisciplinary Collaboration offers a wide variety of insights in and practical instructions for successfully conducting interdisciplinary research

    The internal model: A study of the relative contribution of proprioception and visual information to failure detection in dynamic systems

    The development of the internal model as it pertains to the detection of step changes in the order of control dynamics is investigated for two modes of participation: whether the subjects are actively controlling those dynamics or are monitoring an autopilot controlling them. A transfer of training design was used to evaluate the relative contribution of proprioception and visual information to the overall accuracy of the internal model. Sixteen subjects either tracked or monitored the system dynamics as a 2-dimensional pursuit display under single task conditions and concurrently with a sub-critical tracking task at two difficulty levels. Detection performance was faster and more accurate in the manual as opposed to the autopilot mode. The concurrent tracking task produced a decrement in detection performance for all conditions though this was more marked for the manual mode. The development of an internal model in the manual mode transferred positively to the automatic mode producing enhanced detection performance. There was no transfer from the internal model developed in the automatic mode to the manual mode

    It is proposed that the state space of a quantum object with a complicated discrete spectrum can be used as a basis for multiqubit recording and processing of information in a quantum computer. As an example, nuclear spin 3/2 is considered.
