Analytic structure of solutions to multiconfiguration equations
We study the regularity at the positions of the (fixed) nuclei of solutions
to (non-relativistic) multiconfiguration equations (including Hartree--Fock) of
Coulomb systems. We prove the following: Let {phi_1,...,phi_M} be any solution
to the rank--M multiconfiguration equations for a molecule with L fixed nuclei
at R_1,...,R_L in R^3. Then, for any j in {1,...,M} and k in {1,...,L}, there
exists a neighbourhood U_{j,k} in R^3 of R_k, and functions phi^{(1)}_{j,k},
phi^{(2)}_{j,k}, real analytic in U_{j,k}, such that phi_j(x) =

Hypotaurine and thiotaurine as indicators of sulfide exposure in bivalves and vestimentiferans from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps

The definitive version was published in Marine Ecology 28 (2007): 208-218, doi:10.1111/j.1439-0485.2006.00113.x.Vesicomyid clams, vestimentiferans, and some bathymodiolin mussels from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps possess thiotrophic endosymbionts, high levels of hypotaurine and, in tissues with symbionts, thiotaurine. The latter, a product of hypotaurine and sulfide, may store and/or transport sulfide non-toxically, and the ratio to hypotaurine plus thiotaurine (Th/[H+Th]) may reflect an animal's sulfide exposure. To test this, we analyzed seep and vent animals with in situ sulfide measurements. Calyptogena kilmeri clams occur at high-sulfide seeps in Monterey Canyon, while C. (Vesicomya) pacifica clams occur at seeps with lower levels but take up and metabolize sulfide more effectively. From one seep where they co-occur, both had gill thiotaurine
contents at 22-25 mmol/kg wet mass, and while C. (V.) pacifica had a higher blood sulfide level, it had a lower Th/[H+Th] (0.39) than C. kilmeri (0.63). However, these same species from different seeps with lower sulfide exposures had lower ratios. Bathymodiolus thermophilus (East Pacific Rise [EPR 9°50'N]) from high- (84 μM) and a low- (7 μM) sulfide vents had gill ratios of 0.40 and 0.12, respectively. Trophosomes of Riftia pachyptila (EPR 9°50'N) from medium- (33 μM) and low- (4 μM) sulfide vents had ratios of 0.23 and 0.20, respectively (not significantly different). Ridgeia piscesae vestimentiferans (Juan de Fuca Ridge) have very different phenotypes at high- and low-sulfide sites, and their trophosomes had the greatest differences: 0.81 and 0.04 ratios from high- and low-sulfide sites, respectively. Thus Th/[H+Th] may indicate sulfide exposure levels within species, but not in interspecies comparisons, possibly due to phylogenetic and metabolic differences. Use of automated change detection and VGI sources for identifying and validating urban land use change

Land use and land cover (LULC) mapping is often undertaken by national mapping agencies, where these LULC products are used for different types of monitoring and reporting applications. Updating of LULC databases is often done on a multi-year cycle due to the high costs involved, so changes are only detected when mapping exercises are repeated. Consequently, the information on LULC can quickly become outdated and hence may be incorrect in some areas. In the current era of big data and Earth observation, change detection algorithms can be used to identify changes in urban areas, which can then be used to automatically update LULC databases on a more continuous basis. However, the change detection algorithm must be validated before the changes can be committed to authoritative databases such as those produced by national mapping agencies. This paper outlines a change detection algorithm for identifying construction sites, which represent ongoing changes in LU, developed in the framework of the LandSense project. We then use volunteered geographic information (VGI) captured through the use of mapathons from a range of different groups of contributors to validate these changes. In total, 105 contributors were involved in the mapathons, producing a total of 2778 observations. The 105 contributors were grouped according to six different user-profiles and were analyzed to understand the impact of the experience of the users on the accuracy assessment. Overall, the results show that the change detection algorithm is able to identify changes in residential land use to an adequate level of accuracy (85%) but changes in infrastructure and industrial sites had lower accuracies (57% and 75 %, respectively), requiring further improvements. In terms of user profiles, the experts in LULC from local authorities, researchers in LULC at the French national mapping agency (IGN), and first-year students with a basic knowledge of geographic information systems had the highest overall accuracies (86.2%, 93.2%, and 85.2%, respectively). Differences in how the users approach the task also emerged, e.g., local authorities used knowledge and context to try to identify types of change while those with no knowledge of LULC (i.e., normal citizens) were quicker to choose 'Unknown' when the visual interpretation of a class was more difficult

New charge and current-sensitive preamplifiers coupled to silicon detectors
and devoted to studies in nuclear structure and dynamics have been developed
and tested. For the first time shapes of current pulses from light charged
particles and carbon ions are presented. Capabilities for pulse shape

Infrared absorption cross-sections in HITRAN2016 and beyond: expansion for climate, environment, and atmospheric applications
Spectroscopic analysis of hydrocarbons, halocarbons and related species is required in atmospheric applications such as climate-change research, tracking of pollution and biomass burning, and remote sensing. Critically evaluated line-by-line spectroscopic data are needed for such analyses. To address this need we report the large addition of spectra to the HITRAN2016 database. This extension increases the number of molecules in the database by almost a factor of 6 from that in HITRAN2012. Spectra from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory database (Appl. Spectrosc. 2004;58:1452–61) and the Hodnebrog et al. compilation (Rev Geophys 2013;51:300–78) have been integrated into HITRAN2016. Spectra from high-resolution laboratory observations, predominantly from Fourier transform spectrometers, are now provided for 328 compounds in the IR spectral range. Spectra for atmospherically-important compounds organized by chemical category are presented. The HITRAN infrastructure (www.hitran.org), HITRAN Application Programming Interface (HAPI), and best practices for searching and downloading data are discussed
