Comprehensive territorial strategies to enhance the agricultural-cultural landscape. Ribeira sacra, Galicia, Spain

La Ribeira Sacra es un paisaje cultural con un inmenso potencial. A su enorme riqueza patrimonial hay que añadir la enorme singularidad de su territorio en bancales, consecuencia del arduo y continuado trabajo que, a lo largo de los siglos, los viticultores de la zona han ido trazando en su escarpada orografía. Estos factores lo han convertido en un destino turístico representativo dentro de la geografía española. Sin embargo, la progresiva despoblación que está sufriendo, la falta de relevo generacional ante la escasez de oportunidades o alternativas económicas, la actuación descoordinada y localista de los agentes que actúan sobre su territorio y la falta de una normativa legal que de manera integral ordene y preserve el territorio están teniendo como consecuencia el debilitamiento de su identidad territorial como paisaje cultural. Bajo la premisa de que el territorio encierra en sí mismo las respuestas a sus demandas, se propone una metodología de análisis y diagnóstico de la Ribeira Sacra que ayude a definir posibles lineamientos, los cuales, además ayudar a preservar y revalorizar los recursos patrimoniales, naturales y turísticos que este lugar ofrece, puedan servir como soporte o punto de partida para una posible figura de planificación integral que proteja y ponga en valor su paisaje cultural agrícola.The Ribeira Sacra is a cultural landscape of immense potential. To its vast territory we must add the peculiarity of its terraces, resulting from hard and continued work over centuries of viticulturists that have left their footprint on the steep topography. These factors have made it a remarkable Spanish tourist destination. However, ongoing gradual population loss, insufficient generation replacement resulting from scant economic opportunities and options, poorly coordinated and locally focused actions of territory-based stakeholders’ initiatives, and the lack of a regulatory framework to provide a comprehensive organization to preserve the territotry result in an increasingly weaker territorial identity as a cultural landscape. Under the premise that the territory provides by itself the answers to its own demands, a methodology of analysis and diagnosis of the Ribeira Sacra is proposed that helps to determine possible guidelines, which, in addition, help to preserve and revalue the patrimony, natural resources and tourist attractions this place offers, and can support or become a starting point for a potential scheme for integral planning that protects and values the agricultural cultural landscape

El Green Belt Inglés: de la contención edilicia al valor del paisaje

El proceso de descentralización del territorio inglés tuvo dos consecuencias directas: las New Towns y los Green Belts. Las primeras distribuirán de manera equilibrada la población y los segundos dirigirán y limitarán el desarrollo edilicio. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX este proceso se consolida y con él la implantación del Green Belt. Su permanencia hasta nuestros días respalda su trascendencia dentro del planeamiento inglés, pero en dicho proceso también advierte una evolución: su figura ha sido objeto de una serie de revisiones y ajustes que estarán supeditados a la aparición de nuevos handicaps y a un cambio de patrón y discurso en lo que al entendimiento territorial se refiere. ¿Cuáles han sido estas circunstancias? ¿Cómo ha ido asumiendo ese nuevo escenario? ¿Cuál es el papel que el Green Belt ejerce en la ordenación de la Inglaterra actual? ¿Cuál podría ser en la futura?The decentralization process of the English territory had two direct consequences: the New Towns and Green Belts; the first ones shall distribute the population in a balanced way, the second ones shall lead and limit the urban development. During the second half of the twentieth century this process is consolidated and therefore, the implementation of the Green Belt. Its permanence until today confirms its importance within the English planning, but also notices an evolution in this process: its figure has been subject to a series of reviews and adjustments which shall be subordinated to the appearance of new handicaps and a change of pattern and trend regarding territorial planning. Metalanguage in Carroll\u27s Jabberwocky and Biggs\u27s reRead

In her article Metalanguage in Carroll\u27s \u27Jabberwocky\u27 and Biggs\u27s reRead Asunción López-Varela discusses Simon Biggs\u27s installation reRead \u3chttp://www.littlepig.org.uk/reRead/reRead.htm\u3e in relation to Lewis Carroll\u27s poem. López-Varela posits that both works draw attention to the functioning of self-reflexive semiotic mechanisms present in human discourse and gestures. Based on the examples of the poem and the installation, López-Varela discusses how the human mind creates narratological coherence out of random and recursive patterns and argues that it does so by including other media which enable formats beyond the textual and the iconic. Further, López-Varela discusses how we are pre-disposed to process any semiotic exchange in terms of spatiotemporal sequences and interpret signs with the help of prior knowledge gathered from intersubjective experiences

Comparative Cultural Studies. Multimodality and Intercultural Mediation

[Abstract] In this paper we present our current research that draws attention to the material vehicles of language, focusing on the multimodal forms that are becoming common place in Computer Mediated Communication. We take as starting point socio-constructivist approaches that have maintained that the development of higher mental functions is sociogenetic, thus arguing that cognitive development is first the result of exposure to the social plane and then to the psychological plane, a move that is semiotically mediated in social interaction. This conception of human cognitive development offers insights into the relations between mind development, education processes and socio-cultural and technological implications. We claim that acts of production, distribution and reception of cultural objects form the very symbolic structure of cultural phenomena, and that these performances are located in the materiality of informational exchanges. Furthermore, we indicate that discursive practices and images form the complex multimodal network of signifying practices that constructs realities, rather than simply representing them, and that socially constructed meaning or what we call “culture” takes place through the negotiation of stories, images, and meanings, that is, through performative, jointly-constructed agreements, power relations, and the authorisation and legitimating of social positions. Finally, we situate the study of art is a powerful metacognitive tool that portrays the evolution of human culture. We defend the important role of humanities in processes of social construction and contend that this role is further enhanced through the use of multimodal forms of support. The example of a piece of electronic literature (“30 Days of Rain” by Travis Alber serves a practical show-case that presents the need for a new framework on multimodal social semiotics capable of explain multimodal encounters mediated by digital media

Génesis semiótica de la intermedialidad: fundamentos cognitivos y socio-constructivistas de la comunicación

In the contemporary context in which we are immersed in a seamless mobility, both physical and ideological, mediated by the speed of transportation of people and data (Internet) through the physical boundaries of our body and the territorial borders of our communities, the impact of research on intersubjectivity is necessarily linked to changes in media materials that promote communicative exchanges, that is, to the notion of intermediality. this article seeks to present an outline of the complex network that relates both concepts.En el contexto contemporáneo en el que nos encontramos inmersos en una movilidad continua, tanto física como ideológica, mediada por la velocidad de los medios de transporte de personas y de datos (Internet) a través no solo de las fronteras físicas de nuestro cuerpo, sino de las fronteras territoriales de nuestras comunidades, el impacto de la investigación en intersubjetividad se encuentra necesariamente vinculado a los cambios en los medios materiales que propician los intercambios comunicativos, es decir, a la noción de intermedialidad. Este artículo explora los avances en semiótica y ciencias cognitivas. En particular, se centra en los enfoques recientes denominados "cognición extendida" y "Teorías de aco plamiento material" -"Material Engagement Theory"- para situarlos en relación al poshu manismo. El objetivo final es abordar la cuestión fundamental de la agencia material no humana en el Antropoceno desde una perspectiva semiótica.This paper explores cognitive semiotics in relation to advances in other cognitive sciences. In particular, it focuses on the recent approaches labelled "extended cognition" and "Material Engagement Theory" in order to situate them in relation to posthumanism. The final aim is tackle the fundamental question of material non-human agency in the Anthropocene from a semiotic perspective

Proto-Transmedial Narrative Structures: Lewis Carroll’s A Tangled Tale

This paper explores A Tangled Tale, a collection of mathematical puzzles that Charles Ludwick Dodgson serialized in The Monthly Packet between 1880 and 1885. The hybrid narrative patterns that present mathematical questions by means of fictional storytelling are a unique form of scientific knowledge dissemination that anticipates the breakdown of narrative linearity and the emergence of multiform formats present in transmedia. An inquiry into the Rule of Three and infinite regress tie the knots of a tale that highlights crucial insights on the algorithmic foregrounding of the strategies of transmedia design. Such strategies can be seen as the intersection of narrative as well as mathematical expertise that turn the media galaxy into a cosmic affair
