The control of metabolic CO2 in public transport as a strategy to reduce the transmission of respiratory infectious diseases

The global acceptance of the SARS-CoV-2 airborne transmission led to prevention measures based on quality control and air renewal. Among them, carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement has positioned itself as a cost-efficiency, reliable, and straightforward method to assess indoor air renewal indirectly. Through the control of CO2, it is possible to implement and validate the effectiveness of prevention measures to reduce the risk of contagion of respiratory diseases by aerosols. Thanks to the method scalability, CO2 measurement has become the gold standard for diagnosing air quality in shared spaces. Even though collective transport is considered one of the environments with the highest rate of COVID-19 propagation, little research has been done where the air inside vehicles is analyzed. This work explores the generation and accumulation of metabolic CO2 in a tramway (Zaragoza, Spain) operation. Importantly, we propose to use the indicator ppm/person as a basis for comparing environments under different conditions. Our study concludes with an experimental evaluation of the benefit of modifying some parameters of the Heating–Ventilation–Air conditioning (HVAC) system. The study of the particle retention efficiency of the implemented filters shows a poor air cleaning performance that, at present, can be counteracted by opening windows. Seeking a post-pandemic scenario, it will be crucial to seek strategies to improve air quality in public transport to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases

Decision-making play a very important role in basketball. While the game is taking place, players are constantly choosing what to do. In order to carry out this research work, two questions have been formulated: 1) how do high level female basketball players make a decision while they are competing? 2) which key components do they use to make the best decisions? The twelve players who make up the Spanish female basketball team have taken part in this project. They all participated in the 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which took place in Madrid. This tournament allowed them to qualify and take part in the 2008 Olympic Games, where they finished in fifth place. A questionnaire and an interview have been used to make this research possible. The matches of the 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament have also been analyzed. Those aspects in terms of the team's performance in 1x1 and 2x2 attack situations, and more specifically in pick actions, have been recorded and analyzed. In order to include these data, a system of specific categories and variables has been established. The results show that players are expert on making decisions during the competition. In order to come to this conclusion, their opinions, style of decision-making, as well as the way they move in 1x1 and 2x2 situations, were very useful. This research has also confirmed that decisions made by playmakers, forwards and centers are different

Producción CientíficaBackground: The outcome of colorectal cancer is mostly based on TNM classification. There are several factors determining that patients with the same tumoral stage present different outcomes. The nutritional status has been related to the immunological response and may affect the oncologic results. The purpose of this study was to determine if preoperative nutritional parameters may predict the oncologic outcome in patients with early colorectal cancer. Methods: A prospective observational study of patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer was performed with stage I. Preoperative nutritional assessment included glycemic and lipid profiles, total proteins, and albumin levels. These parameters were correlated with tumoral recurrence during a follow-up of at least 24 months. Results: During the period of study, 744 patients were operated on and 228 (30.6%) followed the inclusion criteria for this study. Recurrence rate was 5.7% (13 patients). Patients with hypoproteinemia showed a 7.8-fold greater risk of recurrence during the first 24 months after surgery [OR 7.8 (CI95% 1.3–48), p = 0.012]. Patients with glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c) > 6.2% showed a 2.3 increased risk of recurrence [OR 2.3 (CI95% 1.1–4.7; p = 0.01]. Conclusions: Preoperative values of total proteins and HbA1c correlate with the recurrence rate in early colorectal cancer

Differential amplifiers can be an appropriate solution in the implementation of radio astronomy receivers, due to their efficient interference and harmonic isolation. In this paper, two different topologies are presented. The first one consists of two single ended amplifiers in a balanced topology. The second one is formed by cascading two simple differential stages. Both circuits operate in the 300MHz to 1GHz bandwidth. Firstly, gain and noise characterizations of each amplifier have been done. Lastly, noise analysis of the whole reception system, formed by the antenna and the differential amplifiers, is presented

Imine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks as Photocatalysts for Metal Free Oxidation Processes under Visible Light Conditions

Embargo de 12 meses tras la publicación exigido por la editorialPhotochemistry of extended polyimine COF structures with laminar, spherical and 3D architectures has been examined. We show that these materials, composed by undecorated phenyl rings and imine fragments, can act as photocatalyts in oxidative transformations, being the crystalline laminar material the most active photocatalyst. The sulfoxidation reaction proceeds with good yields for a large variety of different sulfides. This process was carried out under visible light conditions (20 W), ethanol/H2O as solvent, and the heterogeneous porous material can be recycled up to 9 times. The crystallinity favours the behavior as photocatalyst of laminar and spherical COFs whereas any particular effect on the 3D material activity was observed. Sulfoxidation reaction mainly proceeds through an energy transfer mechanism using crystalline laminar material. In addition, these materials as photocatalysts were used for the oxidation of phenyl boronic acid into phenolWe are grateful to the Spanish Government (CTQ2015- 64561-R and RTI2018-095038-B-I00), “Comunidad de Madrid” and European Structural Funds (S2018/NMT-4367). Circulating miRNAs as predictive biomarkers of type 2 diabetes mellitus development in coronary heart disease patients fromt he CORDIOPREV study

    Get PDF
Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been proposed as type 2 diabetes biomarkers, and they may be a more sensitive way to predict development of the disease than the currently used tools. Our aim was to identify whether circulating miRNAs, added to clinical and biochemical markers, yielded better potential for predicting type 2 diabetes. The study included 462 non-diabetic patients at baseline in the CORDIOPREV study. After a median follow-up of 60 months, 107 of them developed type 2 diabetes. Plasma levels of 24 miRNAs were measured at baseline by qRT-PCR, and other strong biomarkers to predict diabetes were determined. The ROC analysis identified 9 miRNAs, which, added to HbA1c, have a greater predictive value in early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (AUC = 0.8342) than HbA1c alone (AUC = 0.6950). The miRNA and HbA1cbased model did not improve when the FINDRISC was included (AUC = 0.8293). Cox regression analyses showed that patients with low miR-103, miR-28-3p, miR-29a, and miR-9 and high miR-30a-5p and miR-150 circulating levels have a higher risk of disease (HR = 11.27; 95% CI = 2.61–48.65). Our results suggest that circulating miRNAs could potentially be used as a new tool for predicting the development of type 2 diabetes in clinical practice
