Lexical chunks in English and Spanish sales contracts: A corpus-based study

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThis paper focuses on the study of word combinations “of common usage” which are “lexicalized”, have “syntactic and semantic stability, may be idiomatized and carry connotations, and have an emphatic or intensifying function.” (Gläser 1994/1995, 45). Following previous research on Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) and legal phraseology, we will define, identify and classify these units in English and Spanish according to their form and meaning, using a comparable corpus of sales contracts. To carry out our study, we will focus on a number of descriptors that are commonly used within these units on the basis of the headwords they collocate with, in order to determine how specific or general they are in their form, use and meaning since this issue poses translation problems. As genres determine matters such as or terminology and phraseology, the results will be useful for specialized translators and legal drafters.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (project FFI2016-75672-R

[EN] The aim of this study is to test a new perspective on an existing methodology in Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) teaching: the collaborative elaboration of glossaries to learn specialized terminology. In order to solve some of the obstacles found in previous research (Ratz, 2016; Breeze, 2014), our study proposes the creation of a cooperative interdisciplinary network with students of different professional profiles, namely experts in business and experts in English language. The objective is that they complement each other in the elaboration of a glossary of specialized business English terms, contributing with the knowledge of their area of expertise. This activity will be carried out through the glossary tool in Moodle, where business experts will create the entries while English-language experts will correct and complete them. To evaluate the level of success of this proposal, students will be asked to deliver a final task. This virtual cooperative network will prepare the former to carry out their professional work in English, and the latter to reflect on the teaching and translation of English for Specific Purposes.[ES] El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo probar una nueva perspectiva de una metodología existente en la enseñanza de Lenguas para Fines Específicos (LFE): la elaboración colaborativa de glosarios para el aprendizaje de la terminología especializada. Moreno Pérez, L.; López Arroyo, B. Triplication of the photocurrent in dye solar cells by increasing the elongation of the π-conjugation in Zn-porphyrin sensitizers

    Get PDF
Porphyrins are promising sensitizers for dye solar cells (DSCs) but narrow absorption bands at 400-450 and 500-650 nm limit their light-harvesting properties. Increasing elongation of the π-conjugation and loss of symmetry causes broadening and a red-shift of the absorption bands, which considerably improves the performance of the DSC. Herein we use an oligothienylenevinylene to bridge a Zn-porphyrin system and the anchoring group of the sensitizer. We separately study the performance of the two basic units: oligothienylenevinylene and Zn-porphyrin. The combined system provides a three-fold enhancement of the photocurrent with respect to parent dyes. This is caused by an additional strong absorption in the region 400-650 nm that leads to flat IPCE of 60%. Theoretical calculations support that the addition of the oligothienylenevinylene unit as a linking bridge creates a charge transfer band that transforms a Zn-porphyrin dye into a push-pull type system with highly efficient charge injection propertie

Background: A poor body composition (BC) has been identified as a risk factor for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). This study was performed to assess the effect of early peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) on BC in patients undergoing CCR surgery within an enhanced recovery program. Methods: Patients with normal nutritional status were prospectively included between October 2016 and September 2019, randomized into two groups (PPN with periOlimel N4-E versus conventional fluid therapy) and subsequently classified according to their preoperative CT scan into high- or low-risk BC groups. Postoperative complications and length of hospital stay (LOS) were assessed. Results: Of the 156 patients analyzed, 88 patients (56.4%) were classified as having high-risk BC according to CT measurements. PPN led to a 15.4% reduction in postoperative complications in high-risk vs. 1.7% in low-risk BC patients. In the multivariate analysis, high-risk BC was related to an OR (95% CI) of 2 (p = 0.044) of presenting complications and of 1.9 (p = 0.066) for major complications, and was associated with an increase in LOS of 3.6 days (p = 0.039). Conclusions: The measurement of patients’ BC can allow for the identification of target patients where PPN has been proven to be an effective tool to improve postoperative outcomes

Comparative Effect between Antidepressants and D-phenylalanine, a Phenethylamine Precursor, in an Animal Model of Depression

A relevant role has been attributed to phenethylamine in depressive disorders. It has been measured in human urine and rat brain in pathological conditions and after drug administration. Furthermore, a clinical correlation has been proposed between urinary elimination and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, its metabolic predecessor, D-phenylalanine, has been used as an antidepressant drug in the treatment of depressive disorders. The use of this amino acid has been realized alone, or in combination with classical antidepressants. In the present study, we tried to characterize its behavioural profile comparing it with imipramine and fluoxetine. Antidepressant drugs have been studied using diverse animal models. We used here the Porsolt test, or Forced Swimming Test (FST), measuring times of climbing, swimming and resting. When a comparison was performed between groups in climbing behaviour, significant differences were observed between imipramine treated group and saline controls (p < 0.05), and imipramine versus fluoxetine and D-phenylalanine (p < 0.01). When swimming was evaluated, clear differences between D-phenylalanine and the other groups were observed (p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant difference was also observed between imipramine and fluoxetine (p < 0.01). When resting was evaluated, high differences between D-phenylalanine versus all other groups were shown (p < 0.001). Observed behavioural profile was according to serotonergic antidepressant drugs effects. It is supported by the fact that swimming behaviours were increased, and a correlative decrease in resting was also present. We conclude that D-phenylalanine showed higher antidepressant potency than other classical antidepressants, at least at the doses used

The hepatocyte growth factor induces an anti-inflammatory and repairing response in the cholestasis-induced colon damage

    Get PDF
Aim: Cholestasis remains a partially characterized disease. Evidence has been gained that it is a systemic disease that begins in the liver but significantly impacts other organs and systems such as the kidney, heart, and intestine, among others. One of the primary damage mechanisms is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which eventually leads to oxidative stress, impacting canalicular morphology and actin cytoskeleton changes that could worsen the problem. These characteristics are also observed in the kidney and intestine. The work focused on addressing the intestine effects of intrahepatic cholestasis induced by α-naphthyl isothiocyanate (ANIT) and the protective response of the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Methods: The 10- to 12-week-old CD1 male mice were treated with ANIT and then treated or not with HGF; intestine damage was addressed by histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) of specific markers, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Results: Results show changes in the intestine histology, particularly the colon and ileum, induced by the cholestasis. HGF treatment restored the histology presentation and reverted the oxidative damage, clearly indicating a healing response. This observation was supported by an increment in anti-inflammatory macrophages (CD163+) in the HGF treatment. Conclusions: The data prove that HGF induces a protective and repairing response in the intestine under cholestatic challenges

¡Queremos tanto a Anna! Vamos a mandarle flores como para una boda, como para un fiestón, como para una diva de la ópera que no conoce las alergias y le cabe de todo en el camerino, como para la primavera que está comenzando en el Cono Sur. Atypical corpus-based tools to the rescue: How a writing generator can help translators adapt to the demands of the market

    Get PDF
Corpus studies have become an undisputed aid for the evolution of translation, transferring knowledge from the academia to develop tools that have invaluably helped the profession. Nevertheless, the demands of the market require translators to improve their efficiency in order to adapt to its hectic pace. The aim of this paper is to present a possible solution through the use of corpus-based tools that are usually neglected in translation: writing aids. First, the reality of the translation market will be studied to understand the current context and translators’ needs. Then, we will analyze some of the existing tools derived from corpus studies available for translators, both the most and less usual. Finally, we will focus on a booming sector of the market, that of oenology, to exemplify how one of the less typical tools, the writing generator, may be helpful for translators in terms of cost, time, and quality given the current demands. This study was carried out within the research project Producción textual bilingüe semiautomática inglés-español con lenguajes controlados: parametrización del conocimiento experto para su desarrollo en aplicaciones web 2.0 y 3.0, financially supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación since 2016 (FFI2016-75672-R)

The results of the research projects carried out by the academic community have been and will continue to be recognised, valued, published and disseminated by scholarly journals, regardless of their format. The role Higher Education Institutions (HEI) as publishers of scholarly journals is fundamental. Methods: The purpose of this article is to analyse the basic editorial features of the scholarly journals published by Mexican teacher-training colleges. The study uses a descriptive quantitative approach to examine a sample of journals based on the editorial criteria established by Latindex, the Regional Online Information System for Scholarly Journals from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. Results and conclusions: The study has revealed that no research has been carried out on this type of publications in México; that the number of publications published by Mexican teacher-training colleges is small, and that the analysed publications do not meet basic editorial requirements. The results of this diagnosis can help Mexican teacher-training colleges to make the necessary decisions to increase the quality, visibility and chances of survival of their journals
