Condition and recruitment of Aristeus antennatus beyond fishing ground (to depths of 2200 m) in the Mediterranean: relationship with environmental factors

Depth relationships and seasonal trends in the biological condition and recruitment of the red shrimp Aristeus antennatus have been analyzed along down to 2300 m, over all the slope in the Balearic Basin (western Mediterranean). The analysis is based on a composite year (2008-2012 period) and identifies environmental causes of the trends. We found good reproductive and general biological condition of A. antennatus (Gonado-somatic index, GSI) at 800-1300 m in summer (June-July), depths below the fishing grounds. Mating and spawning were at depths below the more saline waters of the Levantine Intermediate water mass. Recruits Smallest juveniles (recruits, ca. 1 yr age) were exclusively distributed below 1000 m, associated with high near-bottom O2 concentration, low turbidity and high C/N in sediments implying favourable trophic conditions. A seasonal migratory pattern is suggested for females, which move shallower to the upper slope during periods of water-mass homogeneity (autumn-winter) to feed in canyons, increasing their energy reserves (hepatic gland weight, HSI). Females move downslope (800-1100 m) to spawn (high GSI) during periods of water mass stratification (late spring-summer). HSI of A. antennatus females decreased linearly with depth down the slope in February and in October-November, i.e., before and after the reproductive period. This nutritional condition of females in these periods is consistent with more consumption of benthic prey (ophiuroids, polychaetes, Calocaris macandreae) at the canyon heads (Cartes, 1994) in late autumn and winter. Our results confirm/suggest: i) how important it is to study the biology of deep-sea species over the whole depth range they inhabit and not only over fishing grounds, and ii) that changes in environmental conditions linked to the progressive warming of Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW) with a parallel increase of salinity could provoke a decrease of O2 in water masses at below 1000 m, affecting A. antennatus recruitment and its life cycle, which is extensible to other deep-sea specie

Diffusive and Arrestedlike Dynamics in Currency Exchange Markets

This work studies the symmetry between colloidal dynamics and the dynamics of the Euro–U.S. dollar currency exchange market (EURUSD). We consider the EURUSD price in the time range between 2001 and 2015, where we find significant qualitative symmetry between fluctuation distributions from this market and the ones belonging to colloidal particles in supercooled or arrested states. In particular, we find that models used for arrested physical systems are suitable for describing the EURUSD fluctuation distributions. Whereas the corresponding mean-squared price displacement (MSPD) to the EURUSD is diffusive for all years, when focusing in selected time frames within a day, we find a two-step MSPD when the New York Stock Exchange market closes, comparable to the dynamics in supercooled systems. This is corroborated by looking at the price correlation functions and non-Gaussian parameters and can be described by the theoretical model. We discuss the origin and implications of this analogy

Density-Matrix functional theory of strongly-correlated lattice fermions

A density functional theory (DFT) of lattice fermion models is presented, which uses the single-particle density matrix gamma_{ij} as basic variable. A simple, explicit approximation to the interaction-energy functional W[gamma] of the Hubbard model is derived from exact dimer results, scaling properties of W[gamma] and known limits. Systematic tests on the one-dimensional chain show a remarkable agreement with theBethe-Ansatz exact solution for all interaction regimes and band fillings. New results are obtained for the ground-state energyand charge-excitation gap in two dimensions. A successful description of strong electron correlations within DFT is achieved.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures Submitted to PR

A study of the sporadic diplomatic relations that the Emirs of Granada maintained with the Ottoman Turk and the more continuous relations that they maintained with the Sultans of Egypt, all motivated by the war with Castile from 1482-1492, which ended in the conquest of the Emirate. Very detailed data about the different embassies and about the sending of Franciscans from the Holy Land to the Catholic Monarchs. Repercussions in the Islamic world of the baptism of the Muslims of Granada in 1501, the embassy of Pedro Mártir de Anglería to Egypt. Installment of the first Turkish corsairs in north Africa

Reprobación y sátira del "gramático" en las letras áureas II. Textos literarios, principios del siglo XVII

In this work, the author studies the satires against the grammarian in Spanish literary texts of the first third of the 17th century, according to the idea of grammar developed by Nebrija and other humanists. Following the negative judgement made by many essay writers in the 16th century, Salas Barbadillo and Quevedo will repeat some specific motives of that criticism, such as the arrogance or the interest in minor features of the texts, compared to the allegedly profound knowledge seeked by theologicians and moral philosophers. By so doing, these authors take part in an intellectual atmosphere against philologists, that confirms the exclusion, in the Spanish thought of the Golden Age, of the humanist grammar as a high ranked discipline.

Specific heat and magnetic measurements in Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3, Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 samples

We studied the magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the compounds Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3, Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3. It allowed us to identify the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and charge ordering phases in each case. The intrinsic magnetic moments of Nd3+ and Ho3+ ions experienced a short range order at low temperatures. We also did specific heat measurements with applied magnetic fields between 0 and 9 T and temperatures between 2 and 300 K in all three samples. Close to the charge ordering and ferromagnetic transition temperatures the specific heat curves showed peaks superposed to the characteristic response of the lattice oscillations. Below 10 K the specific heat measurements evidenced a Schottky-like anomaly for all samples. However, we could not successfully fit the curves to either a two level nor a distribution of two-level Schottky anomaly. Our results indicated that the peak temperature of the Schottky anomaly was higher in the compounds with narrower conduction band.Comment: submitted to PR
