Magnetorheological behavior of magnetite covered clay particles in aqueous suspensions

Montmorillonite clay particles coated with magnetite nanoparticles suspended in aqueous media behave as magnetorheological fluids with enhanced stability as compared to conventional ones. In this work, the study of the magnetorheological behavior of these suspensions of magnetite-clay composite particles has been carried out. For this purpose, both steady and dynamic rheological measurements were carried out in the absence and in the presence of external magnetic fields. In the first kind of experiments, the rheograms of the suspensions (shear stress versus shear rate plot) are analyzed as a function of the strength of the magnetic field applied. In the second one, oscillatory stresses are applied to the system, and the storage modulus is studied as a function of the external magnetic field. In the absence of magnetic field, the suspensions develop a weak yield stress due to the aggregation of the magnetite covered clay particles. In the presence of magnetic field, the yield stress is strongly dependent on the magnetic field strength inside the samples, demonstrating that the suspensions experience a magnetorheological effect, moderate when the magnetic field strength is weak and stronger for values of magnetic field higher than 150–200 kA/m. Actually, the most intriguing result is the change of the trend in the dependence of the yield stress with the field. This dependence is approximately linear with the field for strength values smaller than 150–200 kA/m. On the other hand, for higher values, the yield stress increases with magnetic field following a power law with exponent 4.5.The results are interpreted by means of a model that relates the structure of the particles in the suspensions to the magnetic field applied and using the interaction energy between particles calculated by the extended DLVO theory to include magnetic interaction.Financial support by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Spain) under project No FIS2009-07321, and Junta de Andalucía (Spain) under Project Nos. Apixaban and oral implications

Background: Thrombotic disorders remain a leading cause of death in the Western world, and in this regard a number of anticoagulation treatment have been used, including heparins, fondaparinux, vitamin K antagonists (warfarin, acenocoumarol), and new oral anticoagulants such as apixaban. For years there has been great controversy regarding the use of anticoagulants in planning dental treatments that imply bleeding. The main concerns about using new oral anticoagulants in invasive dental procedures are bleeding due to the lack of an antidote, and the thrombotic risk of the disease for which anticoagulation was indicated in the first place. Material and Methods: A literature search was conducted through May 2014 using the keyword “apixaban” for publications in the ISI Web of Knowledge. The search was extended to other databases (PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane Library). Results: Based on the results of the different studies, apixaban seems to be a good alternative to conventional anticoagulation and a reasonable treatment option, though its main and most common adverse effect is bleeding. Dose adjustment is needed in some patients, though regular laboratory monitoring is not required. The use of the drug in different patient populations will define its final indications and doses. Conclusions: Regarding the use of apixaban in the dental setting, there is a compelling need for further clinical studies in order to establish more evidence-based guidelines for patients requiring antithrombotic treatmen

Statistical complexity, Fisher-Shannon information, and Bohr orbits in the H-atom

The Fisher-Shannon information and a statistical measure of complexity are calculated in the position and momentum spaces for the wave functions of the H-atom. For each level of energy, it is found that these two indicators take their minimum values on the orbitals that correspond to the classical (circular) orbits in the Bohr atomic model, just those with the highest orbital angular momentum.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Editorial : Oral immune-enhancing research in fish

Aquaculture is recognized globally as the fastest growing food-producing sector for human consumption (1). However, to satisfy increasing international demand, it is predicted that current production must be doubled by 2030 while improving the biosafety protocols (2). Such an expansion will necessarily involve implementing innovative actions in aquaculture production while also targeting effective health control measures and considering animal welfare. Diet, environment, and host genotype have been repeatedly demonstrated to play an essential role in defining the fish gut composition (3). However, only a few studies have examined the association between disease severity and degree of dysbiosis in fish. Likewise, the management of pathogens and parasites remains a sustainability challenge industry-wide due to poor understanding of the associated fish immune mechanism across species, and the effects of climate change on aquaculture remain uncertain and complex to validate (4). While these concepts are not necessarily new, applying modern high-throughput sequencing approaches and state-of-the-art immune techniques will accelerate our understanding of the complex trophic (e.g., prokaryotic, eukaryotic) structures, the host recognition systems within aquaculture species and systems, and the effect of an intervention on eventual health outcomes allowing aquaculture to benefit from parallel advances in related disciplines (5). Among the latest therapies developed, orally administered health promoters have demonstrated a strong ability as critical mediators in enhancing the fish immune system. However, the interaction between each element per fish species is highly complex and not always homogeneous along the different developmental stages. Therefore, to assess the expected potential immunological promotion and enhancement capacity, the use of dedicated, robust, and innovative molecular tools accompanied by keen strategies of analysis devoted to elucidating the mode of action for the tested compounds are required. By collating evidence, eleven exciting research papers written by 79 authors in our Research Topic entitled “Oral Immune-Enhancing Research in Fish” are presented in this ebook. Together, they will provide a platform of discussion in the advancement of the actual knowledge and understanding beyond the immediate immune effects and the corresponding immune mechanisms in fish fed with functional feed additives, live supplemented feed, or even exposed to oral pollutants that stimulates a differential immune response in the animals under experimental or fish farm settings.Editorial - Oral Immune-Enhancing Research in FishpublishedVersio

Farmacogenética de reacciones adversas a fármacos antiepilépticos

PLANTEAMIENTO:Las reacciones adversas a medicamentos (RAM) son un problema de salud pública y una importante causa de morbimortalidad a nivel mundial. En el caso de los fármacos antiepilépticos (FAE), la presencia de RAM puede ser un impedimento para lograr el éxito terapéutico al dificultar la adherencia al tratamiento e impactar la calidad de vida del paciente. La farmacogenética busca la identificación de variantes genéticas asociadas a la seguridad de los fármacos. En este artículo se revisan los genes que codifican para enzimas metabolizadoras y transportadores de fármacos, así como en el sistema HLA asociados a RAM inducidas por FAE. DESARROLLO: A la fecha, se ha reportado la asociación de los alelos CYP2C9*2 y *3, que codifican para enzimas de actividad reducida, con efectos neurotóxicos por fenitoína (PHT); alelos nulos de GSTM1 asociados con hepatotoxicidad inducida por carbamazepina (CBZ) y ácido valproico (VPA); polimorfismos genéticos de EPHX1 en la teratogénesis inducida por PHT; variantes genéticas de ABCC2 asociadas con RAM neurológicas por CBZ y VPA, y también diversos alelos de HLA (p. ej., HLA-B*15:02, -A*31:01, -B*15:11, -C*08:01) asociados con RAM de tipo cutáneas. CONCLUSIONES: Los hallazgos publicados muestran que existen RAM con base farmacogenética con una alta variabilidad interétnica, lo que refleja la necesidad de que se realicen estudios en distintas poblaciones para poder obtener resultados que sean de utilidad a un número mayor de pacientes. La búsqueda de biomarcadores que permitan la predicción de RAM a FAE podría mejorar la farmacoterapia en la epilepsia.BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a major public health concern and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. In the case of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), ADRs constitute a barrier to successful treatment since they decrease treatment adherence and impact patients’ quality of life of patients. Pharmacogenetics aims to identify genetic polymorphisms associated with drug safety. This article presents a review of genes coding for drug metabolising enzymes and drug transporters, and HLA system genes that have been linked to AED-induced ADRs. DEVELOPMENT: To date, several genetic variations associated with drug safety have been reported: CYP2C9*2 and *3 alleles, which code for enzymes with decreased activity, have been linked to phenytoin (PHT)-induced neurotoxicity; GSTM1 null alleles with hepatotoxicity induced by carbamazepine (CBZ) and valproic acid (VPA); EPHX1 polymorphisms with teratogenesis; ABCC2 genetic variations with CBZ- and VPA-induced neurological ADRs; and HLA alleles (e.g. HLA-B*15:02, -A*31:01, -B*15:11, -C*08:01) with cutaneous ADRs. CONCLUSIONS: Published findings show that there are ADRs with a pharmacogenetic basis and a high interethnic variability, which indicates a need for future studies in different populations to gather more useful results for larger number of patients. El proyecto que se realiza se basa en el estudio de la situación administrativa y logística de la empresa UNIGRANCA S.A., que está domiciliada en Guayaquil, en Gómez Rendón 3900 y la 16, la cual maneja un modelo de negocio basado en la comercialización de artículos para el hogar a través de catálogos, ofreciendo facilidades de pagos semanales a sus clientes que son sus representantes de venta. El problema principal que presenta la empresa es la falta de control del inventario, dado por la carencia de un eficiente sistema logístico que permita llevar una organización de los pedidos y del stock de las mercancías para así abastecerse en el tiempo pactado, además de no facilitar el aprovechamiento del espacio. Algunas de las acciones que se tomarán para su ejecución son; organizar al personal quien será el responsable del buen estado de la mercancía, así como también del pedido a tiempo de los productos que se requieran, además del control y distribución eficaz a los diferentes puntos de entrega. También se ha realizado un estudio financiero para establecer la rentabilidad del proyecto

Establecimiento de las bases administrativas para la gestión Ambiental en la empresa Gráficas Buda Ltda.

La empresa es la unidad básica del desarrollo económico y una pieza clave en el avance hacia el desarrollo sostenible. Por ello, aceptar que la protección y conservación del medio ambiente forma parte de su estrategia corporativa constituye una responsabilidad social, y un aporte al desarrollo sostenible. A través del desarrollo de políticas preventivas, metodologías y sistemas de gestión, la empresa orienta sus procesos, instalaciones, productos o servicios a minimizar los impactos ambientales y como consecuencia de ello, aumenta sus niveles de competitividad, genera beneficios y nuevas oportunidades de negocio. Cabe aclarar que en la actualidad existen pocas evidencias del desarrollo de estos procesos sin incurrir en certificación mediante estándares internacionales como lo son la ISO 14001:2004, estos estándares aunque aplican la gestión ambiental empresarial de una manera correcta, para algunas organizaciones no es posible acceder a este tipo de certificaciones, ya que los costos económicos en los que se incurriria serían muy altos para su sostenimiento. El caso de estudio se ubica en la Empresa Gráficas Buda Ltda, una microempresa del sector manufacturero de la industria gráfica, dedicado a la fabricación de productos publicitarios en impresos, libros y revistas. Con base en lo anterior el presente trabajo se desarrolla paso a paso en un proceso de implementación de un sistema de gestión ambiental dentro de Gráficas Buda Ltda, tomando como base varias técnicas y herramientas que estructuraron un proceso de implementación, y debido a la amplitud del trabajo, se puede evidenciar un proceso evolutivo desde su formulación hasta la culminación de la práctica empresarial en la cual se evidencia su implementación
