The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between teachers’ leadership styles practices for learning with students’ academic press/emphasis (AP/AE) at selected secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur. The study employed a quantitative research design to address the research problems and two research hypotheses. A total of 328 students from three selected secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur was randomly selected to complete the survey questionnaires of the study. The data were statistically analysed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The results showed that the English subject teachers at the selected national secondary schools exhibited clearly the two leadership styles practices (COE and COA) as it supported the hypotheses that the two predictors were adequate to explain students’ AP/AE, particularly COA which was the most influential predictor. This study therefore adds a new dimension to the body of knowledge that will help researchers’ efforts to understand the relationship between English subject teachers’ leadership styles practices and students’ AP/AE. As this study takes place in the Malaysian context, it definitely contributes to the enriching of the indigenous body of knowledge. The implication would be in terms of the teacher training and enhancement of teacher professional development programmes. Keywords: teachers’ leadership styles; academic press; English; quantitativ

Oil Emulsion Separation Using Forward Osmosis And Its Performance Evaluation

In this study, the separation of water from synthetic produced water and oil-in-water emulsion via forward osmosis was carried out. The membrane used in this study was thin film composite (TFC) membrane with an active polyamide layer. The effect of different feed oil concentrations (50ppm, 100pp, and 500ppm) on the membrane performance was studied. It was found that the water permeate flux decreased when the feed oil concentration was increased due to the formation of cake layer on the membrane surface. The permeate flux of oil-in-water emulsion is higher than that of synthetic produced water due to the presence of sea salt in the synthetic produced water that gives a higher osmotic pressure. The fouling phenomena of the membrane is observed and analysed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The TFC membranes used in this study gave an effective oil rejection rate of 99.2% with minimal fouling tendency. The flux values obtained for synthetic produced water and oil-in-water emulsion were 0.001295 m3/m2.h and 0.004078 m3/m2.h respectively

A PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATION OF A MULTI STAGED HYDROKINETIC TURBINE FOR RIVER FLOW

Our world has been relying on non-renewable energy based on fossil fuels and coal until these energy sources are depleting day by day and giving impact to the environment. To overcome this environmental impact, governments have started to explore renewable energy sources for example solar, biomass, wind and hydro power. Each of this source has their own way to generate electricity. Wind energy is one of the highest power generation resources then hydro takes over as large portion of the world is water. Dam and turbine application had been used to produce electricity using hydro but the power does not support the rural areas because the application is large and need a huge water resource. Savonius Turbine is proposed because it can generate electricity using the low velocity river flow and less construction cost

This perspective examines amphetamine importations into Ireland. Some novel by-products were detected and linked to a change in the method of production of P2P from APAAN. These by-products remained present during subsequent Leuckart reaction conditions. Novel by-products from substituted cathinone synthesis reactions were also isolated and characterized

Investigating the teachers’ leadership styles for learning and students’ academic press/emphasis

The goal of this study was to investigate two research hypotheses.; H1: The English subject teachers at selected national secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, used coercive (COE) and coaching (COA) leadership approaches to lead their students, and H2: In selected national secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, there is a significant relationship between English subject teachers' leadership styles practices and students' AP/AE. The findings revealed that leadership style practices, mainly COA except COE, influence academic press/emphasis (AP/AE). Surprisingly, there is strong evidence that almost all English subject teachers from all three selected schools understudy did not exhibit COE leadership style, despite COA being the most influential predictor. They will most likely try to avoid practicing COE leadership style because it will create reinforcement patterns among the students. As a result, Bass and Riggio [1] defined COE leadership style as a lack of leadershi

The purpose of this study is to see how parents do daily interpersonal communication in guiding their children to learn online during the COVID-19 pandemic in Karang Tangah Pesisir Selatan Village. As long as learning is done online, parents feel the maximum in guiding their children to learn online, but in reality this is not the case. With the various responses that children see when learning online, parents try to guide their children in various ways and methods. This research is a field research using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was collected by means of observation and interviews. The subjects in this study were 3 parents who were determined by purposive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that: First, in an informative approach, parents carry out interpersonal communication in guiding children to learn online related to online learning tasks given by the teacher every day through the whatsapp group. Second, parents have done it gently in a persuasive approach in guiding children to learn online. Third, at the stage of the instructive approach, parents try not to do anything that contains elements of coercion and violence against children or something that is threatening, punishing and physically taking because they don't want children to feel forced and burdened in online learning

Rice Galaxy: An open resource for plant science

    Get PDF
Background: Rice molecular genetics, breeding, genetic diversity, and allied research (such as rice-pathogen interaction) have adopted sequencing technologies and high-density genotyping platforms for genome variation analysis and gene discovery. Germplasm collections representing rice diversity, improved varieties, and elite breeding materials are accessible through rice gene banks for use in research and breeding, with many having genome sequences and high-density genotype data available. Combining phenotypic and genotypic information on these accessions enables genome-wide association analysis, which is driving quantitative trait loci discovery and molecular marker development. Comparative sequence analyses across quantitative trait loci regions facilitate the discovery of novel alleles. Analyses involving DNA sequences and large genotyping matrices for thousands of samples, however, pose a challenge to non−computer savvy rice researchers. Findings: The Rice Galaxy resource has shared datasets that include high-density genotypes from the 3,000 Rice Genomes project and sequences with corresponding annotations from 9 published rice genomes. The Rice Galaxy web server and deployment installer includes tools for designing single-nucleotide polymorphism assays, analyzing genome-wide association studies, population diversity, rice−bacterial pathogen diagnostics, and a suite of published genomic prediction methods. A prototype Rice Galaxy compliant to Open Access, Open Data, and Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible principles is also presented. Conclusions: Rice Galaxy is a freely available resource that empowers the plant research community to perform state-of-the-art analyses and utilize publicly available big datasets for both fundamental and applied science

The relationship of gender roles and beliefs to crying in an international sample

This study aimed to (1) investigate the variation in self ascription to gender roles and attitudes toward gender roles across countries and its associations with crying behaviors, emotion change, and beliefs about crying and (2) understand how the presence of others affects our evaluations of emotion following crying. This was a large international survey design study ( = 893) conducted in Australia, Croatia, the Netherlands, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Analyses revealed that, across countries, gender, self-ascribed gender roles, and gender role attitudes (GRA) were related to behavioral crying responses, but not related to emotion change following crying. How a person evaluates crying, instead, appeared to be highly related to one's beliefs about the helpfulness of crying, irrespective of gender. Results regarding crying when others were present showed that people are more likely both to cry and to feel that they received help around a person that they know, compared to a stranger. Furthermore, closeness to persons present during crying did not affect whether help was provided. When a crier reported that they were helped, they also tended to report feeling better following crying than those who cried around others but did not receive help. Few cross-country differences emerged, suggesting that a person's responses to crying are quite consistent among the countries investigated here, with regard to its relationship with a person's gender role, crying beliefs, and reactions to the presence of others
