    Coherent and incoherent excitation pathways in time-resolved photoemission orbital tomography of CuPc/Cu(001)-2O

    Time-resolved photoemission orbital tomography (tr-POT) offers unique possibilities for tracing molecular electron dynamics. The recorded pump-induced changes of the angle-resolved photoemission intensities allow to characterize unoccupied molecular states in momentum space and to deduce the incoherent temporal evolution of their population. Here, we show for the example of CuPc/Cu(001)-2O that the method also gives access to the coherent regime and that different excitation pathways can be disentangled by a careful analysis of the time-dependent change of the photoemission momentum pattern. In particular, we demonstrate by varying photon energy and polarization of the pump light, how the incoherent temporal evolution of the LUMO distribution can be distinguished from coherent contributions of the projected HOMO. Moreover, we report the selective excitation of molecules with a specific orientation at normal incidence by aligning the electric field of the pump light along the molecular axis

    Does adherence to a quality indicator regarding early weaning from invasive ventilation improve economic outcome? A single-centre retrospective study

    ObjectivesTo measure and assess the economic impact of adherence to a single quality indicator (QI) regarding weaning from invasive ventilation.DesignRetrospective observational single-centre study, based on electronic medical and administrative records.SettingIntensive care unit (ICU) of a German university hospital, reference centre for acute respiratory distress syndrome.ParticipantsRecords of 3063 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients admitted to the ICU between 2012 and 2017 were extracted, of whom 583 were eligible adults for further analysis. Patients’ weaning protocols were evaluated for daily adherence to quality standards until ICU discharge. Patients with <65% compliance were assigned to the low adherence group (LAG), patients with ≥65% to the high adherence group (HAG).Primary and secondary outcome measuresEconomic healthcare costs, clinical outcomes and patients’ characteristics.ResultsThe LAG consisted of 378 patients with a median negative economic results of −€3969, HAG of 205 (−€1030), respectively (p<0.001). Median duration of ventilation was 476 (248; 769) hours in the LAG and 389 (247; 608) hours in the HAG (p<0.001). Length of stay (LOS) in the LAG on ICU was 21 (12; 35) days and 16 (11; 25) days in the HAG (p<0.001). LOS in the hospital was 36 (22; 61) days in the LAG, and within the HAG, respectively, 26 (18; 48) days (p=0.001).ConclusionsHigh adherence to this single QI is associated with better clinical outcome and improved economic returns. Therefore, the results support the adherence to QI. However, the examined QI does not influence economic outcome as the decisive factor

    Cis-cinnamic acid is a novel natural auxin efflux inhibitor that promotes lateral root formation

    Auxin steers numerous physiological processes in plants, making the tight control of its endogenous levels and spatiotemporal distribution a necessity. This regulation is achieved by different mechanisms, including auxin biosynthesis, metabolic conversions, degradation, and transport. Here, we introduce cis-cinnamic acid (c-CA) as a novel and unique addition to a small group of endogenous molecules affecting in planta auxin concentrations. c-CA is the photo-isomerization product of the phenylpropanoid pathway intermediate trans-CA (t-CA). When grown on c-CA-containing medium, an evolutionary diverse set of plant species were shown to exhibit phenotypes characteristic for high auxin levels, including inhibition of primary root growth, induction of root hairs, and promotion of adventitious and lateral rooting. By molecular docking and receptor binding assays, we showed that c-CA itself is neither an auxin nor an anti-auxin, and auxin profiling data revealed that c-CA does not significantly interfere with auxin biosynthesis. Single cell-based auxin accumulation assays showed that c-CA, and not t-CA, is a potent inhibitor of auxin efflux. Auxin signaling reporters detected changes in spatiotemporal distribution of the auxin response along the root of c-CA-treated plants, and long-distance auxin transport assays showed no inhibition of rootward auxin transport. Overall, these results suggest that the phenotypes of c-CA-treated plants are the consequence of a local change in auxin accumulation, induced by the inhibition of auxin efflux. This work reveals a novel mechanism how plants may regulate auxin levels and adds a novel, naturally occurring molecule to the chemical toolbox for the studies of auxin homeostasis

    The ASH1-RELATED3 SET-Domain Protein Controls Cell Division Competence of the Meristem and the Quiescent Center of the Arabidopsis Primary Root

The stem cell niche of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) primary root apical meristem is composed of the quiescent (or organizing) center surrounded by stem (initial) cells for the different tissues. Initial cells generate a population of transit-amplifying cells that undergo a limited number of cell divisions before elongating and differentiating. It is unclear whether these divisions occur stochastically or in an orderly manner. Using the thymidine analog 5-ethynyl-29-deoxyuridine to monitor DNA replication of cells of Arabidopsis root meristems, we identified a pattern of two, four, and eight neighboring cells with synchronized replication along the cortical, epidermal, and endodermal cell files, suggested to be daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters of the direct progeny of each stem cell. Markers of mitosis and cytokinesis were not present in the region closest to the transition zone where the cells start to elongate, suggesting that great-granddaughter cells switch synchronously from the mitotic cell cycle to endoreduplication. Mutations in the stem cell niche-expressed ASH1-RELATED3 (ASHR3) gene, encoding a SET-domain protein conferring histone H3 lysine-36 methylation, disrupted this pattern of coordinated DNA replication and cell division and increased the cell division rate in the quiescent center. E2Fa/E2Fb transcription factors controlling the G1-to-S-phase transition regulate ASHR3 expression and bind to the ASHR3 promoter, substantiating a role for ASHR3 in cell division control. The reduced length of the root apical meristem and primary root of the mutant ashr3-1 indicate that synchronization of replication and cell divisions is required for normal root growth and development

    The status of programed instruction in business courses at the secondary level in the state of Illinois

    Includes bibliographical references (pages [39]-42)There is very little known about the use of programed instruction by business education teachers at the secondary level in the state of Illinois. The purpose of this study was to learn to what extent programed instruction is being used and to obtain information about the programs that are being used to teach business courses in high schools in Illinois. A two-page questionnaire was sent to the business department heads in 651 public secondary schools in Illinois (excluding Chicago). Of this number, 475 business department heads completed and returned the questionnaire. Sixty-eight respondents indicated they were presently using programed learning as an instructional method in teaching business courses, and 407 respondents indicated they were not presently using programed instruction. The 407 respondents who indicated that programed instruction was not presently being used were asked if it had been used in the past. Nine respondents indicated programed instruction had been used in the past and 398 indicated it had never been used. The 398 respondents, who indicated programed instruction had never been used as an instructional method in teaching business courses were asked to indicate the reasons for not using programed instruction. The 68 respondents, who indicated that programed instruction was presently being used, were asked for information concerning the programed material and how it was used. The information included! subjects being taught; name and publisher of program; type of program; portion of course taught with the use of programed instructional materials; classroom use of programed materials; grading in courses taught by programed instruction; testing in courses taught by programed instruction; and additional programs for students. The study revealed that some interest was evident in programed instruction for teaching business courses in the state of Illinois. Among the schools that were not presently using programed instruction, the two most popular reasons for nonuse were lack of information about programed instruction and lack of funds to purchase programed materials. Programed instructional materials were being used mainly as a supplement to other teaching materials and it was utilized in teaching less than one-fourth of the business course.M.S. Ed.
