Order preserving pattern matching on trees and DAGs
The order preserving pattern matching (OPPM) problem is, given a pattern
string and a text string , find all substrings of which have the
same relative orders as . In this paper, we consider two variants of the
OPPM problem where a set of text strings is given as a tree or a DAG. We show
that the OPPM problem for a single pattern of length and a text tree
of size can be solved in time if the characters of are
drawn from an integer alphabet of polynomial size. The time complexity becomes
if the pattern is over a general ordered alphabet. We
then show that the OPPM problem for a single pattern and a text DAG is
NP-complete
Updated evidence on intracoronary abciximab in ST-elevation myocardial infarction: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials
Abstract
Background: Intracoronary (IC) abciximab administration remains a promising approach
aimed to increase a drug concentration in the target area and possibly improve clinical
outcomes in the setting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The goal of
this literature review and meta-analysis is to update available knowledge comparing IC and
intravenous (IV) abciximab administration in STEMI patients.
Methods: A total of 7 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with a median follow-up of 3 months
were included in the meta-analysis (n = 3311). All-cause mortality was selected as the primary
end point while recurrent myocardial infarction (re-MI), target vessel revascularization (TVR)
and major bleeding complications were the secondary end points.
Results: IC abciximab did not provide any benefits in terms of all-cause mortality as compared
with IV abciximab (odds ratio [OR] 0.67; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.34 1.34). However,
this neutral effect was driven by the AIDA STEMI trial. The IC route was associated with a
reduced rate of re-MI when compared with IV administration (OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.40 0.92)
but the difference disappeared after one of the RCTs was excluded from the analysis. Both
strategies were equal regarding TVR (OR 0.66; 95% CI 0.40 1.09) and major bleeding
complications (OR 1.18; 95% CI 0.76 1.83).
Conclusions: Our updated meta-analysis shows that the clinical superiority of IC over IV
abciximab administration in STEMI patients is no longer clear after the release of the AIDA
STEMI trial results. Further research in high-risk STEMI patients is warranted to finally
determine clinical advantages of IC vs IV abciximab administration. (Cardiol J 2012; 19, 3:230 242
Duel and sweep algorithm for order-preserving pattern matching
Given a text and a pattern over alphabet , the classic exact
matching problem searches for all occurrences of pattern in text .
Unlike exact matching problem, order-preserving pattern matching (OPPM)
considers the relative order of elements, rather than their real values. In
this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for OPPM problem using the
"duel-and-sweep" paradigm. Our algorithm runs in time in
general and time under an assumption that the characters in a string
can be sorted in linear time with respect to the string size. We also perform
experiments and show that our algorithm is faster that KMP-based algorithm.
Last, we introduce the two-dimensional order preserved pattern matching and
give a duel and sweep algorithm that runs in time for duel stage and

Risk of acquired drug resistance during short-course directly observed treatment of tuberculosis in an area with high levels of drug resistance.
BACKGROUND: Data on the performance of standardized short-course directly observed treatment (DOTS) of tuberculosis (TB) in areas with high levels of drug resistance and on the potential impact of DOTS on amplification of resistance are limited. Therefore, we analyzed treatment results from a cross-sectional sample of patients with TB enrolled in a DOTS program in an area with high levels of drug resistance in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Central Asia. METHODS: Sputum samples for testing for susceptibility to 5 first-line drugs and for molecular typing were obtained from patients starting treatment in 8 districts. Patients with sputum smear results positive for TB at the end of the intensive phase of treatment and/or at 2 months into the continuation phase were tested again. RESULTS. Among 382 patients with diagnoses of TB, 62 did not respond well to treatment and were found to be infected with an identical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain when tested again; 19 of these patients had strains that developed new or additional drug resistance. Amplification occurred in only 1.2% of patients with initially susceptible or monoresistant TB strains, but it occurred in 17% of those with polyresistant strains (but not multidrug-resistant strains, defined as strains with resistance to at least isoniazid and rifampicin) and in 7% of those with multidrug-resistant strains at diagnosis. Overall, 3.5% of the patients not initially infected with multidrug-resistant TB strains developed such strains during treatment. Amplification of resistance, however, was found only in polyresistant Beijing genotype strains. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of amplification of drug resistance demonstrated under well-established DOTS program conditions reinforce the need for implementation of DOTS-Plus for multidrug-resistant TB in areas with high levels of drug resistance. The strong association of Beijing genotype and amplification in situations of preexisting resistance is striking and may underlie the strong association between this genotype and drug resistance
Metabolism of ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndromes.
© The Author(s) 2018Ticagrelor is a state-of-the-art antiplatelet agent used for the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Unlike remaining oral P2Y12 receptor inhibitors ticagrelor does not require metabolic activation to exert its antiplatelet action. Still, ticagrelor is extensively metabolized by hepatic CYP3A enzymes, and AR-C124910XX is its only active metabolite. A post hoc analysis of patient-level (n = 117) pharmacokinetic data pooled from two prospective studies was performed to identify clinical characteristics affecting the degree of AR-C124910XX formation during the first six hours after 180 mg ticagrelor loading dose in the setting of ACS. Both linear and multiple regression analyses indicated that ACS patients presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction or suffering from diabetes mellitus are more likely to have decreased rate of ticagrelor metabolism during the acute phase of ACS. Administration of morphine during ACS was found to negatively influence transformation of ticagrelor into AR-C124910XX when assessed with linear regression analysis, but not with multiple regression analysis. On the other hand, smoking appears to increase the degree of ticagrelor transformation in ACS patients. Mechanisms underlying our findings and their clinical significance warrant further research.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Bioactivities of Traditional Medicinal Plants in Alexandria
In traditional folklore, medicinal herbs play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of microbial diseases. In the present study, the phenolic profiles of the medicinal plants Asparagus aethiopicus L., Citrullus colocynthis L., Senna alexandrina L., Kalanchoe delagoensis L., Gasteria pillansii L., Cymbopogon citratus, Brassica juncea, and Curcuma longa L. were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detector method. The results revealed rich sources of important compounds such as robinin in the fruits and leaves of A. aethiopicus; caffeic acid in the tubers of A. aethiopicus and quercitrin in the leaves of G. pillansii. Further, relatively high antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities were observed in C. colocynthis fruit coat, S. alexandrina pods, and A. aethiopicus leaves, respectively. The relatively higher the bioactivities of plants extracts associated with the phenols in these plants, in particular, the more abundant the phenols. Therefore, it was concluded that the fruit coat of C. colocynthis, pods of S. alexandrina, and leaves of A. aethiopicus might be excellent sources of natural products. These plant extracts also have a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activities that could be used in the pharmaceutical industries and to control diseases
