    Nanomaterials in Structural Engineering

    Get PDF
Development of structural engineering, daring structures with record spans or heights, meets two serious obstacles—the limitations of traditionally used materials and the need of continuous monitoring of new structures subjected to complex loads, including those of dynamic nature. Considering the responsibility for the life of people and the budget of new structures, the need of constant monitoring is inevitable. This is why structural engineers seek for new solutions; among them, smart structures based on self-monitoring materials seem to be one of the most attractive proposals. It is still an unexplored area, but current research shows a high potential of the use of composites reinforced by carbon-based nanomaterials as self-sensing structural materials. Nanomaterials also influence other important features of structural materials, such as microstructure, mechanical, and transport-related properties. In this chapter, we present the state of art of the use of nanomaterials in structural engineering in various areas including mechanical and electrical properties as well as issues referring to durability

Housing policy as a depopulation reducing tool: selected instruments used in Polish cities

    Get PDF
During last few years depopulation became a phenomenon more visible in Polish cities. The motivation of people to leave a family town is to improve living and working conditions. Cities can respond to demographic processes in a significant way by using proper instruments of the housing policy. The purpose of the author was to present these urban housing policy instruments, which are used to reduce the phenomenon of depopulation. The most frequently used ones are presented as well as innovative solutions, which are an attempt to solve specific problems of selected cities.Depopulacja to zjawisko coraz silniej widoczne w polskich miastach.

The article is an attempt to analyze the narrative and methodological techniques of new historicism. The basis for the analysis was Stephan Greenblatt’s book Will In the Word. How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare, especially because of of creating biographical and intercultural areas. The author of the analysis follows the relations between the truth of narration and historical truth and tries to determine the constituent elements of Hamlet’s author. The author of the analysis traced the relations between two truths: the truth of the historical time and the truth of the narrative time. The article is an attempt to analyze the narrative and methodological techniques of new historicism. The content of this thesis is describing technology of ultrasonic welding, its distribution and application in practice, required devices and their description, and comparison with other technologies of material bonding. In experimental part, it was dealing with the welding samples of electrical contacts and their testing. On samples was performed adhesive test and comparison samples from Metallographic test. Finally, this thesis showed as calculation economic profitability of a new method of bonding the tested contacts.345 - Katedra mechanické technologievelmi dobř

Introducing Data Mesh Paradigm for Smart City Platforms Design

    Get PDF
The concept of a smart city imposes a unique set of requirements for the underlying ICT technologies for a successful implementation of services and applications for citizens. At the core of these requirements lies the complex data platform architecture which must be carefully designed. The selection of a particular data platform architecture incurs significant technical debt to be serviced in the future, as well as the integration challenges involving hundreds of stakeholders. Since services developed within the smart city ecosystem have significant impact on human well-being and quality of life, the process of designing data platform must be robust. Data mesh paradigm is a new approach for building complex information systems. It is particularly suited as the blueprint for designing data platforms for smart cities. In this paper we present the overview of the data mesh concept. Building upon 25 years of experience of developing applications and providing data infrastructure for the city of Poznan, we identify key challenges when using the data mesh approach to build data platform tailored to a smart city. We provide guidelines for successful introduction of the data mesh at sociological, technological, and infrastructure level. We also point to the usability of the data mesh paradigm in the context of digital twins, a promising vision of future services for smart cities
