El secreto en Calderón y en la cultura del Siglo de Oro. Un enfoque nuevo de investigación

The public enactment of secrecy is part of the Spanish Golden Age culture. This article presents a research project, which pursues three objectives: A study of secrecy as a core characteristic of Spanish Golden Age culture, on the basis of historiographical studies, sources and cultural theories of secrecy. A study of Calderonian comedies of secrecy in the context of Golden Age theatre. A case study of the comedy El secreto a voces, including a critical edition that also explores the aesthetics of secrecy and the history of early staging in Madrid and Vienna. With this threefold approach we aim at a deeper understanding of both Calderón’s originality and of the secret patterns of Baroque culture.La escenificación pública del secreto forma parte de la cultura del Siglo de Oro español. Este artículo presenta un proyecto de investigación en sus objetivos centrales: Un estudio del secreto entendido como una característica intrínseca del la cultura barroca española basándose en estudios historiográficos, fuentes y teorías culturales del secreto. Un estudio de las comedias de secreto de Calderón en el contexto del teatro del Siglo de Oro. Una edición crítica de El secreto a voces con especial énfasis en el análisis de la estética del secreto y en la historia de las representaciones en Madrid y Viena. Este enfoque triple del proyecto apunta a un mejor entendimiento tanto de la originalidad de Calderón como de los mecanismos secretos de la cultura barroca

Genome wide expression profiling reveals suppression of host defence responses during colonisation by Neisseria meningitides but not N. lactamica.

Both Neisseria meningitidis and the closely related bacterium Neisseria lactamica colonise human nasopharyngeal mucosal surface, but only N. meningitidis invades the bloodstream to cause potentially life-threatening meningitis and septicaemia. We have hypothesised that the two neisserial species differentially modulate host respiratory epithelial cell gene expression reflecting their disease potential. Confluent monolayers of 16HBE14 human bronchial epithelial cells were exposed to live and/or dead N. meningitidis (including capsule and pili mutants) and N. lactamica, and their transcriptomes were compared using whole genome microarrays. Changes in expression of selected genes were subsequently validated using Q-RT-PCR and ELISAs. Live N. meningitidis and N. lactamica induced genes involved in host energy production processes suggesting that both bacterial species utilise host resources. N. meningitidis infection was associated with down-regulation of host defence genes. N. lactamica, relative to N. meningitidis, initiates up-regulation of proinflammatory genes. Bacterial secreted proteins alone induced some of the changes observed. The results suggest N. meningitidis and N. lactamica differentially regulate host respiratory epithelial cell gene expression through colonisation and/or protein secretion, and that this may contribute to subsequent clinical outcomes associated with these bacteria

Memoria y secreto en el dueno del secreto de Muñoz Molina

Resumen: Este artículo trata de acercarse al tratamiento del tema del secreto en la novela El dueño del secreto de Antonio Muñoz Molina partiendo de algunas teorías de este fenómeno antropológico que es el secreto. Se verá como utiliza algunos aspectos básicos del secreto para la creación de su personaje principal, pero también para la creación de un discurso crítico de la Transición española. Se termina el artículo con algunas consideraciones acerca de la interacción entre memoria y secreto, analizando la amnesia de estos años con el término del secreto negativo. It shows how Muñoz Molina uses secrets and secrecy for the creation of his principal character, as well as for the building of a critical discourse of the Transición española (Spanish Transition). The author studies in a second step the interaction between secrecy and memory, analysing the amnesia from these years with the concept of the negative secret

La sonoridad de la culpa, malos presagios y escenas de horror: a propósito de la asonancia calderoniana en u-a

This article analyses the possible semantisation of a determined assonance from Pedro Calderón de la Barca. With the support of a database of the assonances from the playwright, the author shows in which moments the assonance in u-a appears and in which ways it creates, together with rhyming words, its own meaning. To this end the author analyses the recurrence of this assonance in a wide range of different genres. Finally the article defends the thesis that the assonance in u-a is used to set horror scenes, as well as to create sound effects, in which the phonic rhyme structure produces disillusionary effects of the illusions of the texts surface.Este artículo trata de analizar las posibles semantizaciones de una determinada asonancia de Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Basándose en una base de datos de las asonancias del dramaturgo, se señala en qué momentos aparece la asonancia u-a y cómo crea, junto a las palabras rimadas, un significado propio. Para este fin se analizan recurrencias de esta asonancia en diferentes géneros de teatro. El artículo defiende la tesis que la asonancia en u-a sirve para la ambientación de escenas de miedo y horror, así como para la creación de efectos sonoros sutiles en los que la estructura fónica de la rima produce efectos de desengaño frente al engaño de la superficie del texto

Digital Philology for the Study of Spanish 17th Century Culture and Literature (2014-2017)

Este artículo presenta una panorámica de los proyectos, programas y trabajos de filología digital aurisecular que se han realizado en el trienio 2014-2017. Se describe, primero, los diferentes tipos de ediciones digitales de textos áureos. Se realiza, a continuación, un repaso por las bases de datos más importantes para el estudio del Siglo de Oro, destacando las tendencias más actuales en la creación de metabuscadores. Finalmente, se presentan algunos proyectos de investigación en los que el análisis literario se realiza efectivamente con la ayuda de un programa informático. Tras un balance se listan los recursos y publicaciones sobre humanidades digitales considerados en este artículoThis article offers an overview on projects, programs and publications done in Digital Philology during the past three years (2014-2017). The author describes the different types of digital editions of Spanish 17th century texts published, as well as he tries to offer a presentation of the most important databases, pointing out the newest tendency to unify several databases in one meta search engine. Finally, he presents some of the most innovative project in digital analyses of literary texts. After he short balance the article offers a list of the resources and publications on digital humanities for the study of Golden Age culture and literatur

La estética del secreto en una novela de espionaje : La deuxième mort de Ramón Mercader de Jorge Semprún

This paper examines a specific characteristic of spy novels, the aesthetics of secrecy, on the example of Jorge Semprún's La deuxième mort de Ramón Mercader. An important aspect in the creation of an aesthetic of secrecy in the novel in question is the variation of the famous figure of the double. Ramón Mercader, the protagonist of the novel presents an interesting case of this, which will be analysed in the first part of this paper. The second part of the article points out the overruling organisation principle of the novel: the secret. The complex narratological and temporal structure of the novel obeys to the secret, which makes it the major formal principle of this text. The story does not only narrate secrets but the secret as a formal principle creates a text with plenty of voices and a complex temporal structure, contributing to the creation of an aesthetic of secrecy
