    A Recurrent Case of Targetoid Hemosiderotic Hemangioma: A Case Report and a Comprehensive Review of the Literature

    Targetoid hemosiderotic hemangioma is an acquired vascular malformation of unknown origin. We report the case of a 31-year-old man with a recurrent and spontaneous regressive targetoid hemosiderotic hemangioma. Diagnosis relied on clinical and histological findings. Physical examination revealed presence of an approximately 2 cm targetoid lesion located on the left arm, and associated with pain after pressure. No trigger agent (trauma, insect sting) was reported. Dermoscopy showed a group of red lacunae centrally, encircled by an intermediate yellow circular homogenous area and a red violaceous homogenous ring in the periphery. The histopathological examination and the immunohistochemical staining of the lesion were characteristic for a hemangioma-like proliferation of vessels in the upper part of the dermis, similar to a targetoid hemosiderotic angioma. We also review epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological findings in 6 similar cases presented in the literature. Spontaneous regression and recurrence have rarely been described in this type of skin lesion

    Perturbation Finite Element Method for Efficient Copper Losses Calculation in Switched Reluctance Machines

    Copper losses dissipated in the windings of electric machines are the sum of classical ohmic dc losses and additional ac eddy current losses. In fact, the level of eddy current losses is strongly correlated with the manner of disposition of coil conductors in machine slots. Then, to improve the efficiency in electric machines, the selection of an optimal winding configuration becomes substantial. Since eddy current losses derive from the strong electromagnetic coupling between current density and time-dependent magnetic field, which cannot be solved easily, numerical analyses, such as particularly the one using the finite element (FE) method, are often used. As for the FE modeling, it can employ moving band technique to perform the rotor motion and Newton-Raphson iterations to deal with the nonlinear behavior of magnetic circuits. It leads then to a substantial computational time that hinders any process of conception or optimization of winding geometries. To overcome this issue, a 2-D FE model reduction based on the perturbation method is proposed. It starts from one approximate FE solution of a simplified complete machine modeling to find fast but accurate solutions in slots subdomains when any variation of geometrical or physical data occurs. It allows adapting nonconforming meshes and provides clear advantages in repetitive analyses when we search the optimized winding configuration for a given number of turns. © 1965-2012 IEEE

    Test-retest reliability of temporal and spatial gait characteristics measured with an instrumented walkway system (GAITRite(®))

    BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of temporal and spatial gait measurements over a one-week period as measured using an instrumented walkway system (GAITRite(®)). METHODS: Subjects were tested on two occasions one week apart. Measurements were made at preferred and fast walking speeds using the GAITRite(® )system. Measurements tested included walking speed, step length, stride length, base of support, step time, stride time, swing time, stance time, single and double support times, and toe in-toe out angle. RESULTS: Twenty-one healthy subjects participated in this study. The group consisted of 12 men and 9 women, with an average age of 34 years (range: 19 – 59 years). At preferred walking speed, all gait measurements had ICC's of 0.92 and higher, except base of support which had an ICC of 0.80. At fast walking speed all gait measurements had ICC's above 0.89 except base of support (ICC = 0.79), CONCLUSIONS: Spatial-temporal gait measurements demonstrate good to excellent test-retest reliability over a one-week time span

    Atypical Presentation of Glioblastoma Multiforme

    Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly malignant glial tumour classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a stage IV astrocytoma. It varies in shape and size and can be cystic, vascular and necrotic. It often appears as a ring-enhancing lesion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The most common symptoms of GBM, such as headache, vomiting and seizures, are due to increased intracranial pressure. The objective of this case report is to describe an atypical presentation of GBM. Case Report: A 53-year-old woman of Italian origin presented with a 2-week history of lack of coordination in her hands and some difficulty in speech. Electromyography for assessment of her arms and cranial bulbar function was normal. However, 2 days later, the patient presented to the emergency department with progressive weakness in her left arm and leg as well as difficulty in speech. Mild left facial asymmetry was noted. A brain MRI revealed a right frontal mass. Stereotactic surgical resection was performed 2 days later, and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of GBM. Although headache and other features of raised intracranial pressure are the most common initial symptoms of GBM, any atypical neurological or psychiatric presentation in an adult patient should raise suspicion for this tumour. Conclusion: Careful analysis of an adult with atypical signs and symptoms along with thorough review of radiological tests will facilitate early diagnosis of dangerous tumours such as GBM

    PGRMC1: a new biomarker for the estrogen receptor in breast cancer

    Estrogen receptor (ER) status is a critical biomarker in breast cancer, in large part because the ER is the target of tamoxifen and similar drugs. In the previous issue of Breast Cancer Research, Neubauer and colleagues used a proteomic approach to identify proteins that are differentially regulated by ER in breast tumors. The authors showed that ER-negative tumors have elevated levels of PGRMC1 (progesterone receptor membrane component-1), a hormone receptor component and binding partner for P450 proteins. In contrast, PGRMC1 was phosphorylated in ER-positive tumors. The staining patterns of ER and PGRMC1 were mutually exclusive in breast tumor sections, and PGRMC1 staining was sharply increased in hypoxic areas of the tumor. The results suggest that PGRMC1 is a candidate biomarker for ER status and hypoxia in breast cancer

    COVID-19 in pregnancy—characteristics and outcomes of pregnant women admitted to hospital because of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the Nordic countries

    cited By 0Introduction Population-based studies about the consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) in pregnancy are few and have limited generalizability to the Nordic population and healthcare systems. Material and methods This study examines pregnant women with COVID-19 in the five Nordic countries. Pregnant women were included if they were admitted to hospital between 1 March and 30 June 2020 and had a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test Results In the study areas, 214 pregnant women with a positive test were admitted to hospital, of which 56 women required hospital care due to COVID-19. The risk of admission due to COVID-19 was 0.4/1000 deliveries in Denmark, Finland and Norway, and 3.8/1000 deliveries in the Swedish regions. Women hospitalized because of COVID-19 were more frequently obese (p < 0.001) and had a migrant background (p < 0.001) compared with the total population of women who delivered in 2018. Twelve women (21.4%) needed intensive care. Among the 56 women admitted due to COVID-19, 48 women delivered 51 infants. Preterm delivery (n = 12, 25%, p < 0.001) and cesarean delivery (n = 21, 43.8%, p < 0.001) were more frequent in women with COVID-19 compared with women who delivered in 2018. No maternal deaths, stillbirths or neonatal deaths were reported. Conclusions The risk of admission due to COVID-19 disease in pregnancy was low in the Nordic countries. A fifth of the women required intensive care and we observed higher rates of preterm and cesarean deliveries. National public health policies appear to have had an impact on the risk of admission due to severe COVID-19 disease in pregnancy. Nordic collaboration is important in collecting robust data and assessing rare outcomes.Peer reviewe

    Efficient Organic Photovoltaics Utilizing Nanoscale Heterojunctions in Sequentially Deposited Polymer/fullerene Bilayer

    A highly efficient sequentially deposited bilayer (SD-bilayer) of polymer/fullerene organic photovoltaic (OPV) device is developed via the solution process. Herein, we resolve two essential problems regarding the construction of an efficient SD-bilayer OPV. First, the solution process fabrication of the SD-bilayer is resolved by incorporating an ordering agent (OA) to the polymer solution, which improves the ordering of the polymer chain and prevents the bottom-layer from dissolving into the top-layer solution. Second, a non-planar heterojunction with a large surface area is formed by the incorporation of a heterojunction agent (HA) to the top-layer solution. Poly[[9-(1-octylnonyl)-9H-carbazole-2,7-diyl]-2,5-thiophenediyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole- 4,7-diyl-2,5-thiophenediyl] (PCDTBT) is used for the bottom-layer and phenyl-C71-butyric-acid-methyl ester (PC70BM) is used for the top-layer. The SD-bilayer OPV produced utilizing both an OA and HA exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.12% with a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE). We believe our bilayer system affords a new way of forming OPVs distinct from bulk heterojunction (BHJ) systems and offers a chance to reconsider the polymers that have thus far shown unsatisfactory performance in BHJ systemsope
