    Nonreciprocal optical nonlinear metasurfaces

We demonstrate nonreciprocal one-way transmission through a half-a-micron-thick nonlinear silicon-VO2 metasurface for low-power CW excitation. Reciprocity is broken by optically self-induced phase transition of VO2 occurring at different intensities for the opposite directions of illumination

PHYSICAL EUSTRESSORS AS POTENTIAL TOOLS TO IMPROVE CROP STRESS TOLERANCE (REVIEW)

    Get PDF
Background. The processes occurring in plants and their seeds under stress, as well as the defense mechanisms used by plants under stress, are poorly understood, which makes it impossible to use them to increase yields. Purpose. Review and analysis of scientific publications, devoted to the phenomenon of stress memory acquired by plants as a result of physical stressors on their seeds and possible applications of this phenomenon in plant growing and crop breeding. Materials and methods. A selection and systematic review of scientific articles on the research topic for the period 2016-2023 was performed. The study consisted of the following steps: research literature search, evaluation and selection, data synthesis and analysis. Results. The use of hormetic effects of physical agents to stimulate seed germination of crops is effective. Responses to abiotic stresses could be 'trained' by priming so that the plant becomes better able to cope with later stress. Evidence of short-term and transgenerational memory formation following plant priming has been obtained. An epigenetic mechanism for the formation of long-term stress memory in plants as a result of a physical eustressor has been identified. The eustressor induces specific epigenetic marks associated with environmental adaptation, forming a new stress-resistant plant phenotype. Physical eustressors have the potential to impart stress tolerance to crops to enhance phenotypic characteristics to prevent yield losses. Conclusion. Seed treatment with physical stressors builds plant tolerance and memory to abiotic stresses, but scientific evidence on this issue is incomplete and sketchy. The understanding and application of stress memory for breeding purposes is currently limited, but it has great potential for the development of new crop varieties

Metallic behavior and related phenomena in two dimensions

For about twenty years, it has been the prevailing view that there can be no metallic state or metal-insulator transition in two dimensions in zero magnetic field. In the last several years, however, unusual behavior suggestive of such a transition has been reported in a variety of dilute two-dimensional electron and hole systems. The physics behind these observations is presently not understood. We review and discuss the main experimental findings and suggested theoretical models.Comment: To be published in Rev. Mod. Phy

Block and gradient copoly(2-oxazoline) micelles : strikingly different on the inside

Herein, we provide a direct proof for differences in the micellar structure of amphiphilic diblock and gradient copolymers, thereby unambiguously demonstrating the influence of monomer distribution along the polymer chains on the micellization behavior. The internal structure of amphiphilic block and gradient co poly(2-oxazolines) based on the hydrophilic poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMeOx) and the hydrophobic poly(2-phenyl-2-oxazoline) (PPhOx) was studied in water and water ethanol mixtures by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), static and dynamic light scattering (SLS/DLS), and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Contrast matching SANS experiments revealed that block copolymers form micelles with a uniform density profile of the core. In contrast to popular assumption, the outer part of the core of the gradient copolymer micelles has a distinctly higher density than the middle of the core. We attribute the latter finding to back-folding of chains resulting from hydrophilic hydrophobic interactions, leading to a new type of micelles that we refer to as micelles with a "bitterball-core" structure

The recombinant fusion protein CFP10–ESAT6–dIFN has protective effect against tuberculosis in guinea pigs

    Get PDF
Development of effective vaccine candidates against tuberculosis (TB) is currently the most important challenge in the prevention of this disease since the BCG vaccine fails to guarantee a lifelong protection, while any other approved vaccine with better efficiency is still absent. The protective effect of the recombinant fusion protein CFP10–ESAT6–dIFN produced in a prokaryotic expression system (Escherichia coli) has been assessed in a guinea pig model of acute TB. The tested antigen comprises the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins ESAT6 and CFP10 as well as modified human γ-interferon (dIFN) for boosting the immune response. Double intradermal immunization of guinea pigs with the tested fusion protein (2 × 0.5 µg) induces a protective effect against subsequent Mtb infection. The immunized guinea pigs do not develop the symptoms of acute TB and their body weight gain was five times more as compared with the non-immunized infected guinea pigs. The animal group immunized with this dose of antigen displays the minimum morphological changes in the internal organs and insignificant inflammatory lesions in the liver tissue, which complies with a decrease in the bacterial load in the spleen and average Mtb counts in macrophages

Analysis of Y chromosome STR haplotypes in the European part of Russia reveals high diversities but non-significant genetic distances between populations

    Get PDF
A total of 17 Y-specific STR loci were studied in 12 districts of the European part of Russia aiming to ascertain the amount of substructure required for the construction of a representative regional database. All groups exhibited high haplotype diversities but low inter-population variance as measured by an analysis of molecular variance. However, when Western Russia is taken as a whole, the genetic distances to the neighbouring populations were significant. Whereas gradual change in the Y chromosome pool exists between Russia and the Slavic-speaking populations to the West, remarkable discontinuities were observed with neighbouring populations in the East, North and South

Search for rare or forbidden decays of the D0 meson

    Get PDF
We present a search for nine lepton-number-violating and three lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm decays of the type D0→h'−h−ℓ'+ℓ+ and D0→h'−h+ℓ'±ℓ∓, where h and h′ represent a K or π meson and ℓ and ℓ′ an electron or muon. The analysis is based on 468 fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data collected at or close to the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the twelve modes, and we establish 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (1.0–30.6)×10−7. The limits are between 1 and 3 orders of magnitude more stringent than previous measurements.publishedVersio

    Light meson spectroscopy from Dalitz plot analyses of ηc decays to η0 K+K− , η0 π + π − , and ηπ + π − produced in two-photon interactions

We study the processes γγ→ηc→η′K+K−, η′π+π−, and ηπ+π− using a data sample of 519  fb−1 recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at center-of-mass energies at and near the Υ(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. This is the first observation of the decay ηc→η′K+K− and we measure the branching fraction Γ(ηc→η′K+K−)/(Γ(ηc→η′π+π−)=0.644±0.039stat±0.032sys. Significant interference is observed between γγ→ηc→ηπ+π− and the nonresonant two-photon process γγ→ηπ+π−. A Dalitz plot analysis is performed of ηc decays to η′K+K−, η′π+π−, and ηπ+π−. Combined with our previous analysis of ηc→K¯Kπ, we measure the K∗0(1430) parameters and the ratio between its η′K and πK couplings. The decay ηc→η′π+π− is dominated by the f0(2100) resonance, also observed in J/ψ radiative decays. A new a0(1700)→ηπ resonance is observed in the ηc→ηπ+π− channel. We also compare ηc decays to η and η′ final states in association with scalar mesons as they relate to the identification of the scalar glueball.publishedVersio
