Listening Can Heal and Hurt: Resilience-Related Elements in Supportive Listening Situations

In this qualitative research (N = 27), positioned at the intersection of interpersonal communication and queer studies, the resilience-related elements of supportive listening situations are examined. The research broadens the perspective related to the assumption that being listened to is an empowering experience when it focuses on experiences of lesbians and gay men regarding situations in which they have felt or been excluded because of their sexual orientation. The results of the narrative analysis indicate that in supportive listening situations, the elements contributing to resilience are the person-centeredness of the supportive listener’s messages, the ability to make sense of the experience and the reasons leading to it, and temporal distance when closely attached to the first two elements. If the supportive listening is low person-centered, and/or shared sense-making is missing or fails, it hinders the participants’ ability to engage their resilience capacity and affects the long-term attributions and relevance given to the experience. Therefore, the listening that support seekers receive in a support seeking situation may help them recover from an ostracizing experience, but it can also reactivate the traumatic memories and reinforce the experience of exclusion

Sinebrychoffin lavansiirtovaunujen hankinta sekä lähetys- ja vastaanottoalueiden kehittäminen

Tämä opinnäytetyö on tehty toimeksiantona Sinebrychoff Supply Company Oy:lle. Työn päätavoitteena oli toteuttaa Sinebrychoffille laaja tutkimustyö uusien lavansiirtovaunujen hankinnasta sekä kilpailuttaa trukkitoimittajat, jotka olivat Jungheinrich Lift Truck Oy, Toyota Material Handling Finland ja Wihuri Oy. Sinebrychoffin lavansiirtovaunujen uusiminen tulee olemaan ajankohtaista vuonna 2016 aiemman käyttösopimuksen umpeutumisen takia. Vuoden 2016 aikana Sinebrychoffilla ollaan uusimassa yhteensä yli 80 lavansiirtovaunua. Tämän opinnäytetyön tuloksia hyödynnetään tulevien hankintojen päätöksenteossa ja uuden sopimuksen tekemisessä. Sinebrychoffin lähetys- ja vastaanottoalueiden, terminaalien, nykyisen kaluston ja niihin liittyvien toimintojen nykytila analysoitiin. Todettuihin puutteisiin ja epäkohtiin esitettiin uusia ratkaisuja layout-muutoksien sekä lavansiirtovaunujen lisävarusteiden ja kalustonhallintajärjestelmän avulla. Lisäksi työssä analysoitiin lavansiirtovaunujen vaihtoehtoisten varusteluiden etuja ja kannattavuutta yritykselle. Kilpailutukseen osallistuneiden toimittajien lavansiirtovaunujen vertailuun valittiin Sinebrychoffilla toimivien jakeluyrittäjien ja logistiikkatyöntekijöiden joukosta testiryhmä, jonka kanssa suoritettiin käytännöntestit testikalustolla ja jota haastateltiin. Testiryhmä pisteytti testauksessa olleet lavansiirtovaunut, mitä hyödynnettiin niiden konkreettisessa vertailussa. Käytännöntestien yhteydessä ilmeni myös, että lastauslaitureiden uusiminen lähetysalueella olisi ajankohtaista. Kilpailutuksessa kokonaisuudessaan käytännöntestit, kalustonhallintajärjestelmät, sopimukset ja muut osatekijät huomioiden Sinebrychoffille suositellaan Jungheinrich Lift Truck Oy:tä trukkitoimittajaksi jatkossakin. Tulevien hankintojen yhteydessä lavansiirtovaunujen kokonaismäärää pystytään vähentämään 15 kappaletta jakelun sopeutuksien vuoksi. Hallinnollisina muutoksina ehdotettiin, että tulevaisuudessa jakelun käytössä olevien lavansiirtovaunujen vuokrauskustannukset kohdistettaisiin ja siirrettäisiin Sinebrychoffin jakelun organisaation kustannuspaikalle.This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by Sinebrychoff Supply Company Ltd. The main objective was to carry out comprehensive research for Sinebrychoff about the procurement of new pallet trucks for the company and also to accomplish competitive tendering with pallet truck suppliers, which were Jungheinrich Lift Truck Ltd., Toyota Material Handling Finland and Wihuri Ltd. In 2016, the procurement of pallet trucks will be current due to the expiration of the present contract. During the year 2016, Sinebrychoff plans to replace more than 80 of the existing pallet trucks. The results of this Bachelor’s thesis will be utilized not only in Sinebrychoff’s decision-making in procurement, but also in making a new contract. The current state of the following factors was analyzed, i.e. Sinebrychoff’s dispatching and receiving areas, terminals, current pallet trucks and the related functions. Also new solutions were suggested to the identified defects in these operations. The new solution suggestions were related to layout changes, pallet trucks’ accessories and the Fleet Management System. In addition, the benefits of pallet trucks’ equipment and their profitability for the company were analyzed. When the pallet truck suppliers were compared, a test group was chosen from Sinebrychoff’s distribution entrepreneurs and logistics employees. Practical tests and interviews were carried out with the test group members. The members also evaluated all the tested pallet truck models which were used in the comparative analysis. It was also discovered in practical tests that the loading docks of the dispatch area required renovation. As a result, Jungheinrich Lift Truck Ltd. is recommended for Sinebrychoff as the future pallet truck supplier after the competitive tendering on the basis of the results of practical tests, Fleet Management Systems, contracts and other related components. Furthermore, with the future acquisitions the quantity of pallet trucks can be reduced with 15 units due to distribution reductions. When administration changes are considered, rental costs could be allocated to Sinebrychoff’s distribution organization

Alaikäisen päämiehen edustaminen ja holhousviranomaisen luvan vaativat kuolinpesän oikeustoimet lapsen oikeuksien sopimuksen näkökulmasta

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella Suomen holhoustoimijärjestelmää alaikäisen päämiehen edustamisen näkökulmasta. Tutkielmassa selvitetään minkälaisia velvoitteita holhoustoimesta annettu laki asettaa edunvalvojalle sekä holhousviranomaisena toimivalle maistraatille. Tämän lisäksi tarkastellaan lapsioikeuden alaa radikaalisti muuttaneen Yhdistyneiden kansakuntien sopimusta lapsen oikeuksista ja sitä minkälaisia velvoitteita sopimus asettaa sopijavaltioille. Lopuksi tarkastellaan holhousviranomaisen jäämistöoikeudellisten lupa-asioiden avulla sitä, kuinka Suomen lainsäädäntö sisältää tiettyjä ongelmakohtia lapsen oikeuksien sopimuksen näkökulmasta. Lapsen oikeuksien sopimuksen tulkinta-aineistona käytetään laajasti Yhdistyneiden kansakuntien lapsen oikeuksien komitean suosituksia ja yleiskommentteja. Vaikka sopijavaltiot eivät ole erikseen sopineet noudattavansa näitä suosituksia ja kommentteja, on lapsen oikeuksien komitea ylin kansainvälinen sopimusta tulkitseva elin, joten sen lausunnoille voidaan antaa merkittävää painoarvoa kun on kyse sopimuksen tulkinnasta. Lopuksi maistraatin jäämistöoikeudellisia lupa-asioita käytetään esimerkin ominaisuudessa kun selvitetään sitä, minkälaisia ongelmakohtia Suomen holhouslainsäädäntö sisältää lapsen oikeuksien sopimuksen näkökulmasta. Tutkielmassa esitetyn perusteella ei kuitenkaan ole estettä etteikö näitä samoja argumentteja voisi soveltaa myös muihin lupa-asioihin ja laajemminkin holhousviranomaisen ja edunvalvojien toimintaan

Challenges in Virtual Team Communication in the Context of Virtual Exchange Experience

As technology has enabled people across the world to collaborate and create virtual communities, the ability to interact in computer-mediated, cross-cultural environments in a meaningful way has become a necessity. This is particularly true for younger adults who operate in virtual teams during their studies, for instance in virtual exchange projects, and later in their professional life. In this qualitative study, we examined the features and functionality of cross-cultural communication in virtual exchange teams. By analysing three datasets produced by Finnish university and American community college students (n=38) who participated in a virtual exchange, we examined what kinds of challenges emerge in the communication of virtual teams and how students use theories of computer-mediated communication when trying to make sense of those challenges. The results of the reflexive thematic analysis indicated that the challenges in communication of virtual teams stem from cultural and motivational differences. These challenges could be alleviated by increasing the shared work time allocated for social information sharing and for constructing appropriate, team-specific ways to express online social presence and propinquity. The findings highlight the meaningfulness and relationality of virtual team communication and provide insight into motivational factors and the sense of belonging when communication challenges arise.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Listening in court-connected mediations

As the use of court-connected mediations has received a permanent status as an intrajudicial conflict resolution method, the purpose of this study (n = 38/44 Finnish judges) was to elucidate how listening is used in mediations. The data set one consisted of answers to open-ended questions and was analyzed using thematic content analysis. The data set two consisted 56 statements that were used to create a personal listening profile for each participating judge. The results suggest that 1) facilitative, evaluative, and transformative mediation models have both shared and different listening goals that require an extensive listening competence from the mediator judges, 2) complexity and relationality characterize listening in facilitative mediations, and 3) most judges sent highly or moderately person-centered messages and were excellent in interpretation and evaluation. These results suggest that the relationality of listening in court-connected mediations is imperative in meeting the needs of the mediating parties. The judges’ listening behavior, listening goals, and the listening requirements of each mediation style suggest that the full potential of listening in court-connected mediations is yet to be reached.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Relational Listening, Listening Barriers, and Listening Facilitation in Finnish Administrative Care Order Preparation Hearings

This qualitative study aimed to investigate clients’ listening barriers as well as listening facilitation-related practices applied by social workers in an emotionally charged relational listening situation emerging in administrative hearings. These hearings are filled with tensions that can be assumed to impair the listening of parents and children because in the hearings, final decisions regarding giving a child into care are made. The study examines an authentic child protection situation with three different data sets. Data are analyzed with the thematical content analysis. The results indicate that the clients’ intra- and interpersonal as well as institutional listening barriers can be facilitated by practices applied by social workers in various ways. The study also interestingly reveals how the listening dimensions of social workers are constructed in the relational listening situation emerging in administrative hearings. Even though the study describes the Finnish system and procedure of taking a child into care, and procedural and legal systems are not similar between countries, the core of the social workers’s profession worldwide is relational. Thus, our findings regarding relational listening in social work can be applied widely. Moreover, global similarities regarding the listening dimensions of social workers could be examined in future studies.publishedVersionPeer reviewe
