    Electric-field control of interfering transport pathways in a single-molecule anthraquinone transistor

    It is understood that molecular conjugation plays an important role in charge transport through single-molecule junctions. Here, we investigate electron transport through an anthraquinone based single-molecule three-terminal device. With the use of an electric-field induced by a gate electrode, the molecule is reduced resulting into a ten-fold increase in the off-resonant differential conductance. Theoretical calculations link the change in differential conductance to a reduction-induced change in conjugation, thereby lifting destructive interference of transport pathways.Comment: Nano Letters (2015

    Putting self-regulation theory into practice: A user's manual

    Cervone, Shadel, Smith, and Fiori (2006) propose that theories of personality architecture may provide an integrative theoretical framework for self-regulation research. Building further on this argument, the present paper considers one comprehensive modern approach to personality architecture, personality systems interactions (PSI) theory. The authors provide a brief overview of PSI theory and discuss a simple, three-step "user's manual" that has guided applications of the theory to real-life behavior. Work on PSI theory highlights some of the integrative potential of personality science in the field of self-regulation. The authors conclude that theories of personality architecture may improve the quality and precision of the counselling, coaching, and training that psychologists in many diverse areas provide. © 2006 International Association for Applied Psychology

    NEMA NU 2-2007 performance characteristics of GE Signa integrated PET/MR for different PET isotopes

    BackgroundFully integrated PET/MR systems are being used frequently in clinical research and routine. National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) characterization of these systems is generally done with F-18 which is clinically the most relevant PET isotope. However, other PET isotopes, such as Ga-68 and Y-90, are gaining clinical importance as they are of specific interest for oncological applications and for follow-up of Y-90-based radionuclide therapy. These isotopes have a complex decay scheme with a variety of prompt gammas in coincidence. Ga-68 and Y-90 have higher positron energy and, because of the larger positron range, there may be interference with the magnetic field of the MR compared to F-18. Therefore, it is relevant to determine the performance of PET/MR for these clinically relevant and commercially available isotopes.MethodsNEMA NU 2-2007 performance measurements were performed for characterizing the spatial resolution, sensitivity, image quality, and the accuracy of attenuation and scatter corrections for F-18, Ga-68, and Y-90. Scatter fraction and noise equivalent count rate (NECR) tests were performed using F-18 and Ga-68. All phantom data were acquired on the GE Signa integrated PET/MR system, installed in UZ Leuven, Belgium.Results(18)F, Ga-68, and Y-90 NEMA performance tests resulted in substantially different system characteristics. In comparison with F-18, the spatial resolution is about 1mm larger in the axial direction for Ga-68 and no significative effect was found for Y-90. The impact of this lower resolution is also visible in the recovery coefficients of the smallest spheres of Ga-68 in image quality measurements, where clearly lower values are obtained. For Y-90, the low number of counts leads to a large variability in the image quality measurements. The primary factor for the sensitivity change is the scale factor related to the positron emission fraction. There is also an impact on the peak NECR, which is lower for Ga-68 than for F-18 and appears at higher activities.ConclusionsThe system performance of GE Signa integrated PET/MR was substantially different, in terms of NEMA spatial resolution, image quality, and NECR for Ga-68 and Y-90 compared to F-18. But these differences are compensated by the PET/MR scanner technologies and reconstructions methods

    Verslag van een stageopdracht in het kader van een mosselhatchery/nursery optimalisatieproject, waarbij een onderzoek is uitgevoerd naar de optimalisatie van de algenkweek. In de hatchery worden mossellarven gekweekt en die moeten gevoed worden met algen. De algen in de hatchery worden in plasticzakken gekweekt. Het was echter de vraag of dat wel een efficiënte methode is en of de methode misschien verbeterd kon worden. De conclusie was dat de algenkweek in de hatchery voor verbetering vatbaar is. Het zou zeer lonend zijn om in de toekomst algen te kweken in 50 liter zakken met toevoeging van CO2, omdat daarmee de hoogste dichtheden bereikt kunnen worden. Dit kan ruimte, tijd en kosten besparen

    Fabrication of a Few-Layer Graphene Electrodes for Molecular Electronics Devices

    We report on thefabrication of a molecular transistor based on a single molecule trapped in a few-layergraphene nanogap. The device is pre-patterned with He-ion beam milling oroxygen plasma etching prior to nanogap formation. Pre-patterning helps tolocalize the gap, and to make it narrower, so that only a few or a singlemolecule can be trapped in it. The nanogap is formed by an electroburning techniqueat room temperature. In order to test the functionality of the device wedeposited diamino-terphenyl molecules in the nanogap. Three-terminal electricalmeasurements showed an increase of the current after deposition, and a gatevoltage dependence at low temperatures. Hence, pre-patterned few-layer graphenejunctions can be used for electron transport measurements through a terphenylmolecule with a future prospective towards more complex molecularconfigurations

    Labelling the past: data set creation and multi-label classification of Dutch archaeological excavation reports

    The extraction of information from Dutch archaeological grey literature has recently been investigated by the AGNES project. AGNES aims to disclose relevant information by means of a web search engine, to enable researchers to search through excavation reports. In this paper, we focus on the multi-labelling of archaeological excavation reports with time periods and site types, and provide a manually labelled reference set to this end. We propose a series of approaches, pre-processing methods, and various modifications of the training set to address the often low quality of both texts and labels. We find that despite those issues, our proposed methods lead to promising results.Digital Archaeolog

    Physician gaze shifts in patient-physician interactions:functions, accounts and responses

    ObjectivesPhysician gaze towards patients is fundamental for medical consultations. Physicians’ use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) affects their gaze towards patients, and may negatively influence this interaction. We aimed to study conversation patterns during gaze shifts of physicians from the patient towards the EHR.MethodsOutpatient consultations (N=8) were eye-tracked. Interactions around physician gaze shifts towards the computer were transcribed.ResultsWe found that physician gaze shifts have different interactional functions, e.g., introducing a topic switch or entering data into the EHR. Furthermore, physicians differ in how they account for their gaze shifts, i.e., both implicitly and explicitly. Third, patients vary in treating the gaze shift as an indication to continue their turn or not.ConclusionsOur results suggest that physician gaze shifts vary in function, in how physicians account for them, and in how they influence the conversation. Future research should take into account distinctions when relating gaze to patient outcomes.Practice implicationsPhysicians may be aware of the interactional context of their gaze behaviour. Patients respond differently to various types of gaze shifts. How physicians handle gaze shifts can therefore have different consequences for the interaction
