    Static and Dynamic Behaviour of Gas Bubbles in T-Shaped Non-Clogging Micro-Channels

    Abstract Preventing micro-channels from clogging is a major issue in most micro and nanofluidic systems (Gravesen et al., J Micromech Microeng 3(4):168-182, 1993; Jensen et al., In: Proc. of MicroTAS 2002, Nara, Japan, pp 733-735, 2002 Wong et al., J Fluid Mech 292:71-94, 1995). The T-shaped channel first reported by Kohnle et al. (In: IEEE MEMS, the 15th international IEEE micro electro mechanical conference (ed), Las Vegas, pp 77-80, 2002) prevents micro-channels from clogging by the aid of the equilibrium bubble position in such a geometry. This work is concerned with the static and dynamic behaviour of bubbles in such T-shaped microchannels. The aspect ratio of a rectangle enclosing the Tshaped channel and the contact angle of the walls are the main parameters influencing the static and dynamic bubble behaviour. It is investigated in this article how these parameters relate to the equilibrium bubble shape and how optimum bubble velocities can be achieved inside the channel. An analytical model depending on the contact angle and the channel geometry is presented that allows to determine the bubble configuration inside the channel by minimizing the bubble's surface energy. A second model is derived to predict the velocity of gas bubbles driven by buoyancy in vertical T-shaped channels. The model is applied to design T-shaped channels with a maximum mobility of gas bubbles. Experiments with MEMS fabricated devices and CFD simulations are used to verify the models. Furthermore design rules for an optimum nonclogging channel geometry which provides the highest gas bubble mobility are given

    Alpha induced reaction cross section measurements on 162Er for the astrophysical Îł process

Funded by SCOAP3The cross sections of the Er162(α,γ)Yb166 and Er162(α,n)Yb165 reactions have been measured for the first time. The radiative alpha capture reaction cross section was measured from Ec.m.=16.09MeV down to Ec.m.=11.21MeV, close to the astrophysically relevant region (which lies between 7.8 and 11.48 MeV at 3 GK stellar temperature). The Er162(α,n)Yb165 reaction was studied above the reaction threshold between Ec.m.=12.19 and 16.09MeV. The fact that the Er162(α,γ)Yb166 cross sections were measured below the (α,n) threshold at first time in this mass region opens the opportunity to study directly the α-widths required for the determination of astrophysical reaction rates. The data clearly show that compound nucleus formation in this reaction proceeds differently than previously predicted. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Soil seed bank of the invasive Robinia pseudoacacia in planted Pinus nigra stands

    Pinus nigra and Robinia pseudoacacia are exotic trees used for afforestation in Hungary. Pinus nigra was non-invasive, however R. pseudoacacia escaped from cultivation and invaded several vegetation types including pine plantations. It has recently been planned to cut P. nigra plantations and replace them by native tree stands, especially in nature reserves. The scattered presence of R. pseudoacacia specimens in pine stands might place constraints on planned tree replacement because of their vegetative resprouting and recolonization from an established seed bank. The aim of this study was to investigate the soil seed bank under the canopy of solitary R. pseudoacacia specimens found in P. nigra plantations. Altogether 250 soil samples were collected from the 0–6 and 6–12 cm soil layers under solitary Robinia trees of varying ages (with basal areas between 62.4 and 1089.3 cm2). Seeds were separated by sieving then scarified and germinated. Seed bank density ranged between 640 and 2285 seedsm–2 with an average distribution of 82.7% and 17.3% in the upper and lower soil layer, respectively. Total density of the seed bank and also the seed bank ratio of the lower soil layer increased with tree age. The accumulated seed bank of R. pseudoacacia should be considered in the careful planning of tree replacement operations in Pinus nigra stands

    Information professionals and copyright literacy: a multinational study

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present findings from a multinational survey on copyright literacy of specialists from libraries and other cultural institutions. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on a multinational survey of copyright literacy competencies of Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals and those who work in the cultural heritage sector (archives and museums), conducted in 13 countries, namely Bulgaria (BG), Croatia (CR), Finland (FI), France (FR), Hungary (HU), Lithuania (LT), Mexico (MX), Norway (NO), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Turkey (TR), UK and USA in the period July 2013-March 2015. An online survey instrument was developed in order to collect data from professionals regarding their familiarity with, knowledge and awareness of, and opinions on copyright-related issues. Findings: Findings of this study highlight gaps in existing knowledge of copyright, and information about the level of copyright literacy of LIS and cultural sector professionals. Also attitudes toward copyright learning content in academic education and continuing professional development training programs are investigated. Originality/value: This study aimed to address a gap in the literature by encompassing specialists from the cultural institutions in an international comparative context. The paper offers guidance for further understanding of copyright in a wider framework of digital and information literacy; and for the implementation of copyright policy, and the establishment of copyright advisor positions in cultural institutions. The recommendations support a revision of academic and continuing education programs learning curriculum and methods

    Global Geographic Distribution and Host Range of Fusarium circinatum, the Causal Agent of Pine Pitch Canker

    Fusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pine pitch canker (PPC), is currently one of the most important threats of Pinus spp. globally. This pathogen is known in many pine-growing regions, including natural and planted forests, and can affect all life stages of trees, from emerging seedlings to mature trees. Despite the importance of PPC, the global distribution of F. circinatum is poorly documented, and this problem is also true of the hosts within countries that are affected. The aim of this study was to review the global distribution of F. circinatum, with a particular focus on Europe. We considered (1) the current and historical pathogen records, both positive and negative, based on confirmed reports from Europe and globally; (2) the genetic diversity and population structure of the pathogen; (3) the current distribution of PPC in Europe, comparing published models of predicted disease distribution; and (4) host susceptibility by reviewing literature and generating a comprehensive list of known hosts for the fungus. These data were collated from 41 countries and used to compile a specially constructed geo-database. A review of 6297 observation records showed that F. circinatum and the symptoms it causes on conifers occurred in 14 countries, including four in Europe, and is absent in 28 countries. Field observations and experimental data from 138 host species revealed 106 susceptible host species including 85 Pinus species, 6 non-pine tree species and 15 grass and herb species. Our data confirm that susceptibility to F. circinatum varies between different host species, tree ages and environmental characteristics. Knowledge on the geographic distribution, host range and the relative susceptibility of different hosts is essential for disease management, mitigation and containment strategies. The findings reported in this review will support countries that are currently free of F. circinatum in implementing effective procedures and restrictions and prevent further spread of the pathogen

    Investigation of alpha-induced reactions on I-127 for the astrophysical gamma process

    Background: The. process in core-collapse supernova explosions is thought to explain the origin of proton-rich isotopes between Se and Hg, the so-called p nuclei. The majority of the reaction rates for gamma process reaction network studies has to be predicted in Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations. Recent investigations have shown problems in the prediction of alpha widths at astrophysical energies. This impacts the reliability of abundance predictions in the upper mass range of the p nuclei. Purpose: Our purpose is to measure the I-127(alpha,gamma) I-131 and I-127(alpha, n) I-130 reaction cross sections close to the astrophysically relevant energy range to test the predictions, to derive an improved reaction rate, and to extend the database required to define an improved global optical alpha + nucleus potential. Methods: The cross sections are derived using the activation technique and the yield of the emitted gamma, and characteristic x-ray photons are measured using a LEPS and an HPGe detector. Results: Cross sections of the I-127(alpha,gamma) Cs-131 reaction are determined for the first time, at energies 9.50 Conclusions: The comparison to statistical Hauser-Feshbach model calculations shows that the alpha width can be described well in the measured energy range using a standard, energy-independent global optical potential. The newly derived stellar reaction rates at gamma process temperatures for I-127(alpha,gamma) I-131 and its reverse reactions, nevertheless, are faster by factors of 4-10 than those from previous calculations, owing to further improvements in the reaction model. The importance of the inclusion of complete level schemes in the Hauser-Feshbach calculations is illustrated by comparing the impacts of two level schemes, one of them extending to higher excitation energies but not containing all relevant levels.Peer reviewe
