An Early Violin Sonata by Peter Cornelius: A Critical Edition and Study

The dissertation offers a critical edition of the Violin Sonata in E-flat Major (1844) by Peter Cornelius (1824–1874) based on the autograph manuscript (A-Wn Mus. Hs. 4752, fol. 31r–47r). An early work of a composer still in his student years, the sonata can nonetheless be considered one of the most ambitious instrumental compositions of Cornelius, who is well-known for his opera Der Barbier von Bagdad and his art songs. The sonata\u27s four movements are: Allegro (340 mm.); Scherzo (B-flat major, 416 mm.); Fantasie (C minor, 35 mm.); and the finale (252 mm.). In Chapter One, I describe Cornelius\u27s family background and his life, education, and musical experience until 1841; in Chapter Two, the composer Heinrich Esser (1818–1872), followed by an assessment of Cornelius\u27s studies with him (1841–43). Chapter Three deals with (1) Schubert\u27s Ungeduld (from Die schone Mullerin) as the theme of the Fantasie; (2) Justinus Kerner\u27s Wanderlied, cited in the last movement; and (3) the fragment of Heinrich Heine\u27s poem Die Wallfahrt nach Kevlaar which Cornelius wrote down on the verso of the title page of the sonata. It is argued that these three aspects point to the sonata being a farewell present for Cornelius\u27s girlfriend, Fanny Kramer, upon the composer\u27s expected leave for Berlin. “Escaping the Neurotic-Couch”: A Schizoanalytic Reading of Beckettian Characters in Waiting for Godot

Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2018-2019, Tutora: Mireia Aragay[eng] Beckett’s dramatic oeuvre has been popularly connected to the existential anguish and metaphysical despair traversing Continental philosophy in the second post-war era. The present paper intends to approach the Beckettian cosmology presented in Waiting for Godot from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s schizoanalysis and political ontology of the Body without Organs, so as to examine the desire’s potentiality contained in the (absent) figure of Godot. By focusing on the deterritorializations that Godot’s desiringmachine produces, Beckettian characters will be explored as inscriptions of the poststructuralist field of nomadic subjectivity. This will enable a productive reading of Beckettian realm of ‘nothingness’, not anymore as epitome of crisis, but as suggestion of a new plane of immanence from which to re-organise subjectivity.[cat] L’obra dramàtica beckettiana ha estat popularment associada a l’angoixa existencial i metafísica que travessà la filosofía continental de la segona post-guerra. A partir de l’anàlisi de les desterritorialitzations desencadenades per la màquina desitjant que Godot representa, s’exploraran els personatges beckettians com a inscripcions de la teoria postestructuralista de la subjectivitat nomàdica. Aquest enfocament permetrà una lectura productiva del “no-res beckettià”, entès ja no com a epítom de crisi sinó com a proposta d’un nou pla d’immanència de (re-)organització de subjectivitat
