    Re-imagining One Health: A perspective from social science

    One Health is a framework focusing on the dynamic intersections between humans, animals, and ecosystems regarding health systems and practices. As human decisions and actions are the locus of One Health challenges, it is critical to understand how people perceive and act on these connections. Fundamentally, the literature in this area is based in the natural and health sciences; further efforts are still necessary to fully realize the potential of bringing social research squarely into One Health. We suggest several areas of scholarship that could move this effort forward.; Una sola salud es un marco de interpretación centrado en las interacciones entre seres humanos, animales y ecosistemas, tanto en términos de servicios como de prácticas sanitarias. Las decisiones humanas están en el centro de los retos que plantea este marco, por lo que comprender cómo se perciben estas conexiones y cómo se actúa ante ellas es fundamental. Los estudios en este campo se han basado principalmente en las ciencias naturales y de la salud, y será necesario un esfuerzo adicional para aprovechar también el potencial que tiene incorporar la investigación social a este enfoque.     Supporting student nurses to develop healthy conversation skills

    As advocates for health, nurses are ideally situated to deliver effective health promotion in their daily interactions with people. This work evaluates the integration of healthy conversation training, making every contact count (MECC), into a health promotion module in an undergraduate nursing degree at a higher education institute (HEI). In all, 108 students completed the online questionnaire I year after receiving healthy conversation training. 67% of students reported the regular or occasional use of healthy conversation skills and identified a wide range of scenarios where they had used the skills. 65% of students used health action planning framework in their own personal self-care. Student nurses acknowledged barriers and enablers to their use of healthy conversation skills. Having knowledgeable mentors who role modelled healthy conversations skills in their consultations was the most frequently raised factor, in addition to lack of knowledge of local resources, time and confidence. All placement settings should ensure that registered nurses, especially those undertaking mentorship responsibilities have access to healthy conversation training

    Evaluation of a subject-specific transfer-function-based nonlinear QT interval rate-correction method

    The QT interval in the electrocardiogram (ECG) is a measure of total duration of depolarization and repolarization. Correction for heart rate is necessary to provide a single intrinsic physiological value that can be compared between subjects and within the same subject under different conditions. Standard formulas for the corrected QT (QTc) do not fully reproduce the complexity of the dependence in the preceding interbeat intervals (RR) and inter-subject variability. In this paper, a subject-specific, nonlinear, transfer function-based correction method is formulated to compute the QTc from Holter ECG recordings. The model includes five parameters: three describing the static QT–RR relationship and two representing memory/hysteresis effects that intervene in the calculation of effective RR values. The parameter identification procedure is designed to minimize QTc fluctuations and enforce zero correlation between QTc and effective RR. Weighted regression is used to better handle unbalanced or skewed RR distributions. The proposed optimization approach provides a general mathematical framework for further extensions of the model. Validation, robustness evaluation and comparison with existing QT correction formulas is performed on ECG signals recorded during sinus rhythm, atrial pacing, tilt-table tests, stress tests and atrial flutter (29 subjects in total). The resulting average modeling error on the QTc is 4.9 ± 1.1 ms with a sampling interval of 2 ms, which outperforms correction formulas currently used. The results demonstrate the benefits of subject-specific rate correction and hysteresis reduction

    Sustainability Toolkit for Festival Managers

    This toolkit emerged as part of the Cultura Circular (Circular Culture) programme, a British Council initiative in Mexico focused on promoting a culture of sustainability in the festival sector. The programme envisioned a plan to promote artistic cooperation and exchange between Mexico and the United Kingdom, as well as a training module specializing in environmental sustainability for an emerging network of Mexican festivals. This opportunity helped us recognize the urgency of addressing climate change within our local context, and also collaborate with Edinburgh Napier University leaders in education with a focus on cultural festival and events management in the United Kingdom, who authored this document. This toolkit was created in order to accompany professionals working on producing and promoting cultural festivals (directors, producers, promoters, operational teams, people in charge of communication and logistics, volunteers, as well as technicians, among others) who seek to include and improve their strategies favouring the environment, through reducing the negative impact of carrying out events. Using practical and updated information, work guides, and concrete examples, this document offers the possibility of a detailed understanding of aspects that need to be considered in order to ensure environmental sustainability when carrying out festivals, thus using the available resources efficiently and in a respectful and sustainable way. You will also find relevant references regarding the general context, global agreements, and key concepts about sustainability in the twenty-first century. We hope that these materials allow you to plan and implement your festival, adapting its elements to your needs, resources, and goals

    Responsible learning analytics: creating just, ethical, and caring

    Ethical considerations and the values embedded in the design, development, deployment, and use of Learning Analytics (LA) systems have received considerable attention in recent years. Ethical frameworks, design guidelines, principles, checklists, and a code of practice have contributed a conceptual basis for focused discussions on ethics in LA. However, relatively little is known about how these different conceptual understandings of ethics work in practice. This half-day interactive workshop aims to provide participants with a space for information, dialogue, and collaboration around Responsible LA. The workshop will begin with a brief overview of Responsible LA. After that, the participants will present their cases drawing attention to the ethical considerations covered and not covered in LA practices. Following this, participants in groups will discuss the cases illustrating ethical tensions and create semantic categories to document such edge cases. The collected edge cases will be shared in a wiki or database. The workshop outcomes will help inform LA practitioners on ethical tensions that need to be discussed with care while highlighting places where more research work is required
