    Healthcare provider perceptions of clinical prediction rules

    Objectives: To examine internal medicine and emergency medicine healthcare provider perceptions of usefulness of specific clinical prediction rules. Setting: The study took place in two academic medical centres. A web-based survey was distributed and completed by participants between 1 January and 31 May 2013. Participants: Medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy or nurse practitioners employed in the internal medicine or emergency medicine departments at either institution. Primary and secondary outcome measures: The primary outcome was to identify the clinical prediction rules perceived as most useful by healthcare providers specialising in internal medicine and emergency medicine. Secondary outcomes included comparing usefulness scores of specific clinical prediction rules based on provider specialty, and evaluating associations between usefulness scores and perceived characteristics of these clinical prediction rules. Results: Of the 401 healthcare providers asked to participate, a total of 263 (66%), completed the survey. The CHADS2 score was chosen by most internal medicine providers (72%), and Pulmonary Embolism Rule-Out Criteria (PERC) score by most emergency medicine providers (45%), as one of the top three most useful from a list of 24 clinical prediction rules. Emergency medicine providers rated their top three significantly more positively, compared with internal medicine providers, as having a better fit into their workflow (p=0.004),helping more with decision-making (p= 0.037), better fitting into their thought process when diagnosing patients (p= 0.001) and overall, on a 10-point scale, more useful (p= 0.009). For all providers, the perceived qualities of useful at point of care, helps with decision making, saves time diagnosing, fits into thought process, and should be the standard of clinical care correlated highly (\u3e= 0.65) with overall 10-point usefulness scores.     1. The rate of elongation and thickening of individual branches (shoots) varies across plant species. This variation is important for the outcome of competition and other plant-plant interactions. Here we compared rates of shoot growth across 44 species from tropical, warm temperate, and cool temperate forests of eastern Australia.2. Shoot growth rate was found to correlate with a suite of traits including the potential height of the species, xylem-specific conductivity, leaf size, leaf area per xylem cross-section, twig diameter (at 40 cm length), wood density and modulus of elasticity.3. Within this suite of traits, maximum plant height was the clearest correlate of growth rates, explaining 50 to 67% of the variation in growth overall (p p 4.     Stress appraisal, coping, and work engagement among police recruits: an exploratory study.

    This study investigated the influence of stress appraisal and coping on work engagement levels (Absorption, Vigour, and Dedication) of police recruits. Participants were 387 men, ages 20 to 33 yr. (M = 24.1, SD = 2.4), in their last month of academy training before becoming police officers. Partially in support of predictions, work engagement was associated with Stressor control perceived, but not Stress intensity experienced over a self-selected stressor. Although the three dimensions of work engagement were explained by Stressor control and coping, Absorption was the dimension better explained by these variables. Police recruits reporting higher Absorption, Vigour, and Dedication reported using more Active coping and less Behavioural disengagement. Results showed that stress appraisal and coping are important variables influencing work engagement among police recruits. Findings suggested that future applied interventions fostering work engagement among police recruits should reinforce perceptions of control over a stressor as well as Active coping strategies

    A corresponding states approach to Small-Angle-Scattering for polydisperse ionic colloidal fluids

    Approximate scattering functions for polydisperse ionic colloidal fluids are obtained by a corresponding states approach. This assumes that all pair correlation functions gαβ(r)g_{\alpha \beta}(r) of a polydisperse fluid are conformal to those of an appropriate monodisperse binary fluid (reference system) and can be generated from them by scaling transformations. The correspondence law extends to ionic fluids a {\it scaling approximation} (SA) successfully proposed for nonionic colloids in a recent paper. For the primitive model of charged hard spheres in a continuum solvent, the partial structure factors of the monodisperse binary reference system are evaluated by solving the Orstein-Zernike (OZ) integral equations coupled with an approximate closure. The SA is first tested within the mean spherical approximation (MSA) closure, which allows analytical solutions. The results are found in good overall agreement with exact MSA predictions up to relevant polidispersity. The SA is shown to be an improvement over the ``decoupling approximation'' extended to the ionic case. The simplicity of the SA scheme allows its application also when the OZ equations can be solved only numerically. An example is then given by using the hypernetted chain (HNC) closure.
