How the Instruction and Use of Three Metacognitve Reading Strategies Helped Fourth Graders Find Success and Enjoyment in Reading Informational Text

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore what would happen when I provided my students with metacognitive reading strategies in order to promote their engagement with and understanding of expository texts. To do so, I focused on three metacognitive strategies that I explicitly instructed in a series of small group settings; connecting, imaging, and predicting. I provided the students with time to practice the strategies independently using expository texts such as magazines, textbooks, and nonfiction books. I wanted to make a difference in the way my students read nonfiction information. I wanted them to see the value in reading such texts, and teach them ways to make sense of what they read

Business Consulting: a Marketing Strategy for the Entrepreneur

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to propose a framework of a marketing strategy for business consulting entrepreneurs. Although research related to entrepreneurial marketing for business-consulting firms is minimal, the intent is to create a foundation for additional research. With a case study research methodology and a review of the literature on entrepreneurial marketing, this study synthesizes this research into a framework for entrepreneurs to create a marketing strategy for their business consulting firms. Albeit in its infancy, entrepreneurs of business-consulting firms may be able to glean important marketing elements for the creation of a marketing strategy

Death Anxiety amongst Medical Facility Staff Working with Medically Fragile Individuals

    Get PDF
Death, an inevitable concept that connects us as humans, can cause significant anxiety in individuals. Literature suggests that some medical professionals choose the field because of their own inner struggles with death (Neimeyer et al., 2004). Archival interview data were utilized in this action- oriented research to explore the notion of death anxiety in professionals who are working with medically fragile children. Twenty-six employees were individually interviewed at a residential medical facility. Additionally, a retrospective journal was utilized to understand the author’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences during internship. In order to examine the potential categories and themes that the author developed and to reduce personal bias, a validation team was utilized. Through reviewing the structured interviews, three perspectives of death were described, based on the participants’ responses (i.e. the actual death of a patient, anticipation of death of self, and anticipation of the death of family members). Regardless of job title, age, gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or years of experience, the majority of individuals did not share death anxiety of self or others. Rather, the participants described having increased mindfulness of medical conditions, awareness/appreciation of life, and knowledge and beliefs on life sustaining equipment. Based upon this current research study, medical personnel may benefit from medical facilities promoting positive self-care through enlisting motivational speakers, providing in-services on the topic, and providing training programs (e.g., stress management)

Two-Way Optical Frequency Comparisons Over 100km Telecommunication Network Fibers

By using two-way frequency transfer, we demonstrate ultra-high resolution comparison of optical frequencies over a telecommunication fiber link of 100 km operating simultaneously digital data transfer. We first propose and experiment a bi-directional scheme using a single fiber. We show that the relative stability at 1 s integration time is 7 10^18 and scales down to 5 10^21. The same level of performance is reached when an optical link is implemented with an active compensation of the fiber noise. We also implement a real-time two-way frequency comparison over a uni-directional telecommunication network using a pair of parallel fibers. The relative frequency stability is 10^15 at 1 s integration time and reaches 2 10^17 at 40 000 s. The fractional uncertainty of the frequency comparisons was evaluated for the best case to 2 10^20. These results open the way to accurate and high resolution frequency comparison of optical clocks over intercontinental fiber networks

On Love and Work: A Vow of Wholeness in Writing

    Get PDF
Noting that academic writing typically falls in the category of work, this piece considers the relationship such writing might have with love. Animated by its observation that love's affinity with wholeness distinguishes it from work's tendency to divide a subject from herself, the essay playfully develops this contrast by telling a story of writing and wholeness. This story attempts to embody the contrasts of which it speaks, and in the process, to discover a counterpoint to the work of writing
